Asbury Park, NJ

In my opinion, Asbury Park and the nearby towns to its north are the true heart of the Jersey Shore. Unlike the tourist and guido-dominated vacation towns just south (Belmar, Pt Pleasant, Seaside), Asbury Park is popping year around. It is home to a vibrant music and arts scene, a bunch of homos, spoiled college kids, and some seriously dangerous ghetto-ass neighborhoods, making it the closest thing Jersey has to Brooklyn. It was recently voted "Coolest Small Town" in America by Budget Travel Magazine. I love it here, and according to my forum search results, it is basically uncharted territory on RVF.

Girls

I would argue that the Northern Jersey Shore has some of the sexiest girls in the country outside of major cities like NYC, Miami, or LA. Here's why:

-Many successful businessmen from the greater NYC Metro area settle down in Monmouth County to start their families. Powerful businessmen marry high value women and produce beautiful kids.
-Large Italian population = plenty of sexy, tan brunettes.
-Home to nearby Monmouth University, an expensive, private D-1 school = hot 21 year old girls running wild and free.
-Large population of rich, classy homos that attract fancy restaurants and trendy lounges that, in turn, attract hot girls.
-Beach town = People spend more time in bathing suits and take better care of their bodies.

In addition to the population of young, sexy, white girls described above, there are sexy black girls and latinas as well. If you're into wacky bi-sexual hipster bitches with tattoos and blue hair, there are a ton of them too. My friends from out-of-town give the talent two thumbs up when they come to visit.

Daygame

Boardwalk and Beach - In places like Belmar or Seaside, you'll see squads of 20-somethings that roll 6-20+ deep. They can be downright hostile over protecting their girls from strange guys. Asbury attracts more locals and has more liberal artsy types, so it way easier to meet people. Girls wander around in smaller groups, sometimes with just one friend or even alone. You can do very well prowling the boardwalk and just being friendly.

Convention Hall - This is at the northern end of the boardwalk. It's a big colluseum structure that houses a couple bars, boutique shops, and a popular coffee bar. This is my favorite spot for daygame.

Cookman Ave - This is the main drag in the downtown area of Asbury Park. Once the sun goes down, there are groups of girls all over the place going from bar to bar. There are plenty of cool shops, restaurants, juice bars, and other places that attract curious females.

Bradley and Atlantic Square Park - There always seems to be some type of fair, concert, or event going on in theses areas next to Convention Hall. You can wander and chat girls up here all day depending on the event.

Festivals - Beer Festivals, Food Festivals, Art Festivals. 5K races...there seems to be some new tourist attraction every other weekend. In general I think these end up being pretty lame, but who knows.

Nightgame

Johnny Mac's - My favorite spot for during the week. Large indoor and outdoor spaces that can get a little too crowded on the weekends. Very popular for Monmouth U students. Has an awesome free speed dating bar promo a couple times each month which is a fun way to meet girls or shake the rust off if you haven't approached in a while.

Porta - Fancy pizza place that turns into a huge club at night. Has a dancehall/hip hop room and an large open-floor EDM room. Very popular with students and early 20s people. You can clean up here, but it's easier to come with a wing or a group than solo.

Asbury Hotel - I love this place! Opened last year - upscale hotel that has a cool bar downstairs and a sick rooftop lounge upstairs. Plenty of hot girls.

Beach Bar - Honestly not sure if this is a gay bar or not. I've gone a couple of times where it was nothing but groups of homos/freaks or basic, hot white chicks. Totally worth a look.

Asbury Festhalle & Biergarten - People rave about this place but I think it's just OK unless you are a big fan of heavy European beer or you want to have a get-together with your friends. Pretty cool rooftop with a slightly older, more mature crowd.

Ale House - Obnoxious sportsbar with a shitty layout and way, way too loud music. The kids seem to love it anyway though, as you'll see alot of hotties and broskis partying to top 40 music. Maybe I'm just too old to put up with this shit anymore.

House of Independents - This is an event venue that hosts stand-up comedy, art exhibits, raves, punk concerts with moshpits, and hip hop shows. Usually requires tickets or door cover. One night last summer, I went to out to watch the NBA finals during a torrential downpour. I wandered inside to what I eventually learned was a lesbian rave. Stayed for 5 hours and met some weird chicks. Good times.

Bond St Bar - Cool venue with three different levels and a very different bar on each floor. Can get a little crowded/loud for my liking and has a bit of a hipster vibe. Hit or miss.

Little Buddy - I haven't been here yet but it's a hidden speakeasy kind of place tucked away somewhere in the center of town. It's very small, but I have heard raving review about the ratios and talent.

Gay Bars

Maybe this isn't your thing, but I think gay bars are alot of fun, especially as date venues or for weird night out where you just want to meet interesting people. Anyway...

Paradise - Large multi-room club at a hotel that also has an outdoor pool area with lounge chairs. In the summer, it's fun relaxing outside and looking at the strange people - you don't even need to drink. Only gets creepy when it's too crowded. I've banged more girls from here than anywhere else in Asbury. Not sure what that says about me, but whatever .

Georgie's - Dive bar that has kareoke and free pool. It also has a nice outdoor area that is rarely crowded. Great first date spot.

Where to Stay

Asbury Hotel - New and Swanky. Probably a little pricey, but great location near Convention Hall and Porta.

Berkley - Never been inside, but I've heard its not as nice as the Asbury and about the same price. Literally across the street from the Asbury Hotel.

The Empress - this is the hotel that is connected to Paradise, so you can only imagine what takes place during the wee hours of Saturday and Sunday morning. It is probably cheaper than the first two spots, but I would never know because there is a zero percent chance I would spend the night here.

Final Thoughts

I'm not qualified to talk about the arts, but I do know there are alot of shows and tons of music venues that I didn't even bother mentioning like the Stone Pony and The Saint. There are a lot of other bars and tons of swanky restaurants, but I only wrote about what I know.

Don't sleep on NJ motherfuckers.

It amazes me the throws that Asbury Park has gone thru. It used to be known as "Newark By the Sea"

My parents took to the rides as a little kid (early / mid 1970s) but stopped after continuous threats and harassment from gangs of black men (which specifically targeted my mother). The area went through a revival in the boom years during the mid to later 1980s, but that came to a screeching halt: Building projects went belly up (organized crime was involved.. Tony Soprano style), crime was rampant, the FBI was after the mayor and city council people, and a lot more.

By the mid to late 1990s, Asbury Park's famed board walk was a ghost town with much of the city looking like a friggin scene from post apocalyptic B movie.

Good post.

My dad grew up round these parts, and I lived in South Jersey for a minute. For whatever reason, I feel whenever I settle down, it'll be in Central Jersey.

Hot girls, good food, and tons of business opportunities.

What areas around there would you recommend living? I've been to Asbury Park a few times, and I never got a good vibe as a place I'd want to shack up.

Dang now you got me all excited!

Absolutely right! NJ (especially Northern and parts of Central) there are tons of opportunities in many respects. It is very expensive due to taxes and regulations but in the NYC metro area, it's really a good place to live. Smarter people, lots of options in terms of women and the kind of sex they want (the best sex I've had has always been in NJ and NYC...people are way more open to the "forbidden", etc). I'm going back soon and would not live anywhere else in the US outside that area NYC/NNJ.

I also would not live in Asbury Park unless I was ballin' or I had serious interest in renovating homes in the hood.

Nearby towns like Long Branch, Sea Bright, Oceanport, Eatontown, Red Bank are all more reasonable, but you will need a car.
