Johor – I was there only one night, but as it seems a potentially exciting location, and has not been covered yet, I will give you my impression.
In one word: disappointing. I expected it to be easier than Singapore, but man was I wrong. This was also confirmed by a guy I met at “Aruku the Walk” (he is Iranian, looks very Caucasian, so no potential racist girl issues): he said that place (Aruku) was the best, and that is very difficult to pick up in Johor, and he said Singapore is much better for meeting girls.
Here is my night:
- Dee Bangkok around 11pm. Backside of “New York Hotel”, quite big, club interior was ok. Some (hot) Thai girls, they were calling us over when we entered. Otherwise empty, we decided to move on.
- La Primeur: smallish, had some people, and the only 2 set of girls I would see for the rest of the night, but it was early, and I wanted better. We returned at the end of the night, see further down the page.
- Ultimo Pub: empty. We were told that nightlife starts around 1am in Johor.
- Sky 26 @ Holiday Villa (23:50): Skybar, quite cool (not as cool as the ones in Bangkok though). Had some hot girls finally, but they were with guys, in groups (a trend that would continue for the rest of the night).
- Twilight lounge: close to Sky 26, empty.
- Duty free zone: there were 6 bars/clubs there. See below.
= Freedom – looked busy, young, queue, so we did not get in.
= 00:35 Avenue@Zon – smaller, no interesting girls, we moved on.
= 00:51 Geoventure – more quiet than the other bars. Some hot girls, with guys. 2-set of free girls, from Singapore, the friendly one not so cute, that’s not what I came for.
= Two small clubs next to Avenue@Zon: terrible techno, dirty. There were several young good looking girls with terrible old (local?) men. They were super touchy with each other. They did not look like hookers, so I do not understand what was going on there. We had a beer there but could not spot any girls that were not (physically) occupied by guys.
= There was also another small club, for Indian people, again saw no girls.
- “Aruku the Walk”, 2am: A Malaysian girl at Geoventure said it is the best place. Iranian cool expat I met there also said the best place in town to pick up. Saw no girls without guys. Approached one, she said she is married, but I am 99% sure the guy she presented me as her husband was just some friend that was “rescuing” her. Iranian guy said it is tough with the girls in Johor.
- It was quite hard to find taxis, we always had to ask people to allow us to use their Wi-Fi to order an uber.
- 3:20 am: Pixie Entertainment: wow, that place had amazing looking girls, the best of the whole night. It seems they were just closing. I said hi to some of the girls on their way out, but they just ignored me. Quite big place with tables and life music (that was already finished when I was there).
- 3:30 Dee Bangkok again. Still empty! We spoke to some Thai girls on a table, they were friendly. Then something super weird happened (2nd weird thing after the young girls with the old guys in the Duty Free zone): ALL the girls went on the stage, and some got prizes. 50, 100 ringgit. Seems some guys gave them rewards for the time the girls spent with them. Not sure they were straight out hookers anyway, I suggested to my girl that my place is just around the corner, but she would not come with me.
- We stayed at New York Hotel. Place is super cheap and ok, but they only have smoking rooms, the next morning I felt sick from the smell of smoke, even though I smoke sometimes.
Clubs that are permanently closed according to google maps (some of them are located in the duty free zone, and probably just changed name: Movement Ultimate Club = ROI club? Grindhouse. Aquasonic. Legato Bistro Bar. Dolce Club is Freedom now)
Other advice I got: Skudai area for less tourists (but the whole night I saw only 3 other white people anyway).
