Koh Chang - Thailand | Datasheet

Koh Chang - Trat | Thailand

I know there's already a datasheet for Koh Chang on the forum, but it's three years old and a lot have changed here since. So here is a new updated datasheet for 2017.

Quick info about me:

I'm a 28 year old dude. 180 tall with chestnut colored hair, a overgrown beard and blue eyes. I'm not jacked, but I'm not fat or lazy either. Just a normal body (70kg). I think my best feature with girls is to make them laugh and feel comfortable.

I'm no expert on game, but I'm happy with my skills around girls. I have yellow fever, so I usually never have to deal with white chicks with boosted egos anyways.

Personal Experience with Koh Chang

I've just passed my fourth week on this island as we speak. I also spent December last year here to celebrate New Years Eve.

Koh Chang is my favorite island in Thailand. I think it beats Koh Samoi which is much more developed and I think it beats Koh Pha Ngan where you find Full Moon party and Half Moon party. Koh Tao is a nice island too, but it's just to small to stay long time imo.

Why? Because I think Koh Chang is perfectly balanced between being an untouched island with mostly beautiful clean nature but also have some of that craziness and madness that we all love and know about Thailand. You can spend your daytime here on untouched beaches for yourself, while in the nighttime party with hot Thai girls or Khamer girls, or you could go to Lonely Beach to find yourself a fat American woman with an attitude of a super model. The world is your oyster.

Anyways..

When I go to an island I like to mostly relax and feel the tropical nature around me. On Koh Chang you can do just that as you have several beaches around the island with no annoying sellers. You can also relax on the beaches here without hearing annoying traffic and broken mufflers like in Pattaya or Phuket.

The local people here has to be some of the most friendliest people of all the islands in Thailand. There's also a big number of Cambodian people on the island working in pretty much every business on the island.

Brief Overview of the City

Koh Chang explained:

Everything touristy is going on at the West side of the island, the sun side. The island is most developed up northwest near the ferries, and as you get more and more south on the West side it gets less and less cramped with developments and tourists.

White Sand Beach
The most developed beach on the island. Mostly families that stays here as there are a ton of big 4 and 5 stars resorts here that are very family friendly.

There is also some nightlife going on in the town of White Sand Beach, and you have many restaurant along the beach that pops up around sunset that serves food and alcohol. When the sun is down and the darkness has come the restaurants start with live shows like fireshows and dancing.

There is also a big bar complex at White Sand Beach with around 30 bars with working girls. But I don't like this place as there seems to be some sewage leaking in the nearby area making it smell like shit (literally). There are more fun bars like this more south on the island.

Remember that you have to see this beach in context of Thailand. When I say developed I mean developed compared to the rest of Koh Chang. If you compare White Sand Beach with lets say Patong Beach in Phuket, then White Sand Beach is just a little patch of dirt out in nowhere.

In White Sand Beach you can stay all day without getting harassed by beach sellers and broken mufflers. That is NOT possible in Patong or Pattaya.

Chai Chet
This is the next down about 2 km south of White Sand Beach. I have to be honest. Not much going on here so I will not say much about it. There is a small strip of bars here with working girls but it's quite boring and seems to be where old expats hang out.

I few German and Scandinavian bars here with old retirees drinking up their pension. Nothing to see there.

Kai Bea
Roughly 4 km south of Chai Chet you will find the next big town. This is probably my favorite place on the island especially for nightlife. In Kai Bae you will find the only 'walking street' in Koh Chang. It's a parallell street of the main road that goes all along the West Coast.

In Kai Bea you will also find the islands only skybar that is on the roof of Gallery hotel. Furthermore you have a ton of small bars and restaurants spread all around town.

Lonely Beach
Next up you have the backpacker mekka of Koh Chang. Lonely beach is a small town with a ton of laid back restaurants, hostels and cheap bungalows.

It also have the two best (and only?) nightclubs at Koh Chang, Himmel and TingTong bar. They are not exactly nightclubs by Bangkok or Pattaya standard, but they have a big dance-floor with music blasting until 6am so I will just call it a nightclub.

Bang Bao
Bang Bao is the southern most town on Koh Chang on the west side. There is a big pier here that have daily trips for snorkelers and divers, and also ferries to other islands like Koh Wai, Koh Mak and Koh Kut. I haven't been on these islands yet so I can't say anything about them.

The pier also have a big marked that sell all kind of goods and restaurants that sell seafood.

You also have a ton of rasta / reggie bars in this area that sells food and drinks. If you are a little bit gentle in your approach getting marihuana here is no problem.

In Bang Bao you also have my favorite beach, Klong Kloei Beach. This beach is stunning with crystal clear water on really white sand. You'll find hammocks and sun chairs everywhere it will never get full and you can rent a Kayak for roughly 3 dollar per hour.

PS:
If you don't turn right on the main road when you get to Klong Kloei Beach, but continue 2km straight forward you will get to a nice river with a bridge where you can swim. This is fresh running water and a little bit colder than the ocean water. I have been here many times. In the weekends this place seems to be a popular place for Thai people to relax too, and the locals will put up small street kitchens and tables eating by the river. Good atmosphere for sure. [Image: biggrin.gif]

The east side of Koh Chang
So what is going on at the east side of Koh Chang? Not much tbh. There is a shooting range where you can shoot with anything you'd like. However in low season it's only open on call, so you need to plan. In high season you can just come there no planning needed.

Down southeast on the island there is a small fishing town called Salak Petch, it can be a nice place to explore if you first want to drive down the east side of the island. There is also a waterfall here, but you have to walk 2km inside the forest to get there. Should not walk inside there without some minimum protection (snakes and bugs are everywhere). I would wear rubber boots and jeans.

If you go even further south on the island you'll find a beach called Long Beach. This place is as desolate as you get it. There are a few bungalows here and a restaurant, that's it.

The Women

You have four types of women on Koh Chang.

Tourists (non-backpackers)
Tourists (backpackers)
Thai girls
Khamer girls

Tourists (non-backpackers)
These are usually Russians, East-Europeans, Chinese, Korean or Japanese. They travel with their family, spouse or boyfriend in 99.999% of the time so these women are out of reach unless you meet some freak that love to fuck other guys on her yearly romantic vacation.

Tourists (backpackers)
These girls are usually from mainland Europe like Germany and France, but could also be from England, Scandinavia or the US.

I've met some cool backpacker chicks here and there, but I have to be brutally honest;

Most of them are disgusting human beings and I could not even get a boner even if I had Viagra. They smell bad, take ugly tattoos, many are obese, they have terrible attitude, a drinking problem and are just not that exciting or fun to be around.

Just last night while I was driving home I met two English girls on the dark hill road between Lonely Beach and Bang Bao carrying their third friend home that was so drunk she could not walk. They could not take a 3 dollar taxi because they had to save money. Why are you even traveling when you can't spend 3 dollar on a taxi? I just don't get it...

All three girls was pale white, obese, had ugly tattoos, no manners and smelled alcohol from a mile away. No thanks!

Another episode some days earlier was a girl from Sweden that ate a burger in Kai Bea. First she eat the burger for 110 baht (4 dollars), then when she's finished she beg for a fucking discount. I mean, it's four fucking dollars. These Thai people work their asses off then you ask for a fucking discount AFTER you ate the burger.

I gave that Swedish cunt a lesson on the spot about courtesy while the Thai woman was clapping in the background.

Most of these backpackers just sit inside their hostels with no money wherever they go bragging about how they have seen everything. Lol they haven't seen shit all they've done is getting wasted.

Okay, I'm not judging every backpacker out there as I've met cool ones too. It's just so many of them are so arrogant and pretentious you just want to puke...

Thai girls
Thai girls are just like Thai girls all over Thailand. They are usually fun to be with and they love to travel around doing stuff like eating, chilling, banging and sleeping. Wonderful girls!

Unfortunately it can be hard to date Thai girls that you find on Koh Chang because most girls you find here work in hotels and restaurants where they have to work up to 12 hours a day because they have to quarrel with rude backpackers asking for discounts... I've met cute girls down here that I really want to take on a date but they have no time for such things. Sad but that's the reality.

If you want to spend your time on Koh Chang with a Thai girl I suggest you find her in Bangkok before you come to Thailand using either Thai Cupid or Thai Friendly. I have written a little bit about that here.

Khamer girls
Khamer girls are such wonderful girls! Cambodia is Thailands neighbor but these two nations are so different. Yes they have similarities also but it's really two completely different people and you wouldn't belive that these people where just next to each other if you'd never looked at a globus.

The first thing you will notice with Khamer girls is that they actually know how to speak English. Some of these girls speak up to 4-5 languages. Khamer, Thai, English and French ++..

You can talk with Thai girls, but with Khamer girls you can actually have a conversation about deep and complicated topics. That's something you have to look long for if you're dating Thai girls. In that camp it's mostly Thai language, Thai people and Thai food..

You'll find Khamer girls all over Koh Chang just as Thai girls. They work in shops, hotels, bars, lady bars and some are also housekeepers and cleaners in smaller family businesses around the island.

Game

I think the best game at Koh Chang if you are hitting on the locals is to travel slow. If you're coming here for a 2-3 weeks you simply don't have enough time to know a girl as most of them work so much. Most Thai girls are not really that interested in foreigner who just come here for a couple of days or weeks.

Also. A lot of girls here work in family businesses, and these people know everyone on the island. I girl like that can't just start to screw around. She would fuck up the status to her entire family. If you want a girl like that out here you need to take it slow!

You do not have the benefit of anonymity out there.

Show that you're just not a normal tourist, but that you are interested in Thai culture, Thai language and that you will stick around for a while. If you do that, you will win a lot of hearts here.

Except for that just use normal game for Thailand, but that is already written about on this forum so I won't repeat that.

Nightlife Recommendations

Biggest towns for nightlife is White Sand Beach, Kai Bae and Lonely Beach. I think Kai Bae and Lonely Beach is most fun. The nightclubs in Lonely beach are great fun despite a few annoying backpackers and drug addicts. There are also ton of Thai and Khamer girls roaming around in these bars at night, so you will always find someone to hang out with.

In Kai Bae you have walking street with around 30 bars. Some of the bars also have working girls from Thailand and Cambodia. There are also girls in these bars who don't do P4P, but that still will go out with you, for free, if you can make them like you.

If you want to know more about the nightlife at Koh Chang I have a brief nightlife guide here with pictures, videos from YouTube and map. I tried to put it in this post but there no way to insert the map and I can only add 10 pictures maximum.

Day Game Locations

Not really that many good day game spots on the island. You could probably hit up some backpackers on the beaches during daytime, but Thai girl don't stay outdoor that much as they don't like to get tan, so you won't see them roaming around in the sunshine.

There are a lot of hot girls around in the big 4 and 5 star resorts. You could just walk inside some of them then start to hit up girls. I've done that a million times in Bangkok so I see no reason that it should not work at Koh Chang.

Other Info / Recommendations (optional)

When to travel
November to January are high season for Koh Chang with the best possible weather, 25-30 degrees and sunshine everyday. In the last week of December Lonely Beach was PACKED with people waiting to go bananas on the beach while celebrating New Year. The vibe was pretty wild.

The same happened the week Thailand celebrate songkran (april). It was people all over the place going bananas with water war. Great fun!

The rest of the year (May to October) Koh Chang suffer heavy rain and thunder storms. Koh Chang is in fact the wettest place in Thailand in rainy season, some days it can be pouring down for hours making floods and landslides that block the roads. Other days it can be sunshine just like in high season. If you're coming here for a short time in low season it's really a gamble considering the weather. You could get amazing sunshine, or you could be stuck in traffic from a landslide. Who knows..

There are still some tourists and backpackers around in the low season, but it's much more calm. In for example TingTong Bar, one of the nightclubs in Lonely Beach there was maybe 200 people in the week people New Year, yesterday it was maybe 40 people on the peak.

In the ladybars there can be literally empty of people some days and you could have a bar with 3-5 girls for yourself... [Image: tongue.gif]

Daytime activities
Daytime activities are what I really love about Koh Chang. I'm not really here to party or go crazy with 10 different girls. I'm here to relax and maybe make a couple of new friends, if that is a Khamer girl or a cool chick from The Netherlands is not really important for me. I always have an open mind.

This island is paradise for people who love to drive motorbikes and motorcycles. There is so much to do and explore. Waterfalls, rivers, wild animals, elephants, crazy mountain roads, trekking to mountaintops, desolate beaches and fishing towns (especially on the east side of the island).

Hell I even got the offer to join a fisher crew for catching shrimps an entire night on a real shrimp boat while I was eating in one of the desolate towns.

On the east side you have long stretches you can just cruise along, while on the West side you have small towns and crazy hill roads and sharp curves all over the place.

If you get to know the locals here they will show you secrets beaches, waterfalls and rivers very few foreigners have been to. Rivers far inside the jungle where you can swim in crystal clear fresh water from the nights rainfall while you eat fresh local fruit grown on the island.

Food
Food is very cheap if you just use a few simple tricks. This is an island so seafood is naturally cheaper than pork and beef.

Also, instead of eating in restaurants that is close to the main road, just walk into any side street, walk 50 meter, and the prices is half the price already. You can get a a ton of tasty dishes that will make you full for 50 baht.

In the same street as Himmel and TingTong Bar there is a Kebab shop that sells chicken Kebab. Just try it, it's fucking heaven.

How to get here
The best way to get to Koh Chang is to jump on a bus from Ekkamai bus station in Bangkok to Ao Thammachat or Trat. Ao Thammachat is the little town where the ferry goes so try to get a bus to that town instead for Trat, but Trat will work fine too as you can jump on a taxi from Trat bus station to Ao Thammachat.

Buses goes all the time so no need to plan ahead, just meet up at the Ekkemai bus station.

If you are going there right before New Year or SongKran you should meet up on the bus station the day before to book tickets just in case it gets full.

Bus tickets are for the moment 260 baht one way.

The Bottom Line

Koh Chang really have the feel of a tropical island! It's not too developed, but you are not out in the middle of nowhere either. It's the perfect balance in my opinion.

Go cruisin' an old beaten up bike you rented for 3 dollar or jump from the tree out in crystal clear rivers in the daytime, just to join crazy beach parties in nighttime where you meet people from all over the world with crazy stories to tell.

Koh Chang is a fantastic place so if you ever come to Thailand it's a place that you absolutely should check out. If you're going to Cambodia from Thailand this island can be a nice stop-over for a few days as it's just on the border to Cambodia.

Depends a little bit on what place you stay in. If you stay in a cheap 150 baht shack the internet will probably be unstable and if it's raining heavy it will sometimes cut for a while.

If you stay in a nicer place they have fast internet you can use for videocalls. I have no problem with that and I also upload videos to YouTube regularly. The bungalow I stay in right now cost 650 baht, but I get it for 200 baht per night as I'm staying long time and rent per month and not per day.

In rainy season the island suffer from power cuts because trees fall over the power lines, but they usually fix it very fast. No power means obviously no Internet. Some of the nicer 4 and 5 stars resorts have diesel generators for backup power.

This is my third day on the island, first impressions so far.

I kind of like the place, but it's not for everybody. Getting here from Bangkok takes the whole day and is very tiring, so if you're in Thailand on a short vacation keep that in mind. It takes less time to fly direct anywhere else in South East Asia from Bangkok than to get here by bus and ferry.

I didn't rent a motorbike because the roads are dangerous and there are many accidents. To get anywhere other than the immediate area where you're staying, you need a taxi or your own bike. There are no motorbike taxis, Uber or Grab. Songtew (tuk tuk) taxis, which are white pickup trucks with two rows of seats, are available but not plentiful or cheap if you use them a lot, especially late at night.

Decent hotels start at around $60 per night and are almost fully booked at the time of writing (early December). Dinner at a decent place with a couple of beers is around $10. The food is great, particularly seafood.

I am staying on Kai Bae beach which has a chill vibe and is great for couples and families, but probably not the best for single guys. Two bars mentioned in the datasheet are within short walking distance from me: Mojito Lounge was always almost empty on both nights I passed by. Filou Cocktail Lounge I haven't checked out yet, but will go there tonight. Sky Bar I passed by, but it's not really close to anything else on the island. I might check it out later as well while I'm in this area.

I checked out Lonely Beach earlier today, the area around Himmel bar and the beach nearby. A lot more younger people, many couples but some single girls as well. Seems like there's a lot going on at night in that area. I'm moving there tomorrow, so will check out the nightlife and report back.

Tinder is pretty much dead, mostly bar girls (hookers) and the odd white girl. I had two tinder dates so far. One Thai girl stopped by during the day in a nice brand new SUV. She turned out to be a cashier at one of the hooker bars on White Sand Beach. Looks early/mid 30s. She offered to drive me to White Sand beach and show me around a little, which I accepted. I think I could game her and bang for free if I wanted to, but i can't be bothered given that she's nothing special and probably bangs for money as well. Must be good at it if she has an expensive SUV.

Another Tinder date was with a Russian girl, mid 30s. Notice that I had to extend my usual age range on Tinder because it's so dead here. I normally go up to 30 or so. I met with the Russian girl, spent a few hours with her in the evening which was quite fun, tried to push for the bang but no luck. Pretty decent looking for her age, but she doesn't seem to be the kind of girl who just bangs random dudes on a first date for fun. I don't have the patience to go on multiple dates with her.

My first impression so far is that OP is right about Koh Chang: if you're staying here for a relatively short term, bring a girl with you. To give you an example of more of a "party island", every time I went to Bali, I would have already gotten laid by the 3rd day, probably more than once. I didn't come all the way here for bangs, though. If that was the main goal I would go elsewhere in Thailand and SEA.

Here is a quick overview of Koh Chang where I spent 6 days: 3 days on Kai Bae beach and 3 days on Lonely Beach.

It's a nice and quiet island and which I can recommend for a visit, ideally longer than a few days due to the time and effort it takes to get there and back. However, I do not recommend it for game. I did get laid a couple of times and had a couple more opportunities I didn't follow up on because my trip was so short. However, unless your thing is hitting on backpacker chicks or trying to find single Russian girls (neither option is worth the effort in my opinion, but YMMV), three are better places in SEA to game.

The most populated part of the island the western part. Every place worth visiting and staying at is on the main road by the beach except for the jungle, mountains etc which I didn't get a chance to explore.

I do not recommend renting a motorbike unless you are an experienced rider and know what you're doing. There are so many accidents that one of the locals who works in the tourist business said that most bike rental agencies require tourists to give their passports as a deposit because too many of them get into accidents and just leave the island instead of paying for repairs. Getting around on tuk tuks / songtews is not expensive compared to Phuket, for example, but at night and in more remote areas around Lonely Beach they may be difficult to find. The prices at night are also much higher.

Kai Bae Beach. Nice and chill. Many Russians. Most Russian girls travel with their husbands, boyfriends or sponsors. I checked out Mojito Lounge which was pretty cool. Met some Thai girls and partied with them on Lonely Beach as well, didn't bang any of them though. If you stay there without a motorbike, pick a place within walking distance to Mojito Lounge. There are many shops and restaurants there as well. Filou Cocktail Lounge is near Mojito but was closed when I visited.

White Sand Beach. I only visited briefly during the day, so can't say much about it. The beach itself is nice, but so are Kai Bae and Lonely Beach.

Lonely Beach. The main area where most backpackers stay and where the bars and restaurants are is actually not on the beach. There are a few hotels right on the beach within 10-15 minutes walking distance from that area, but without a bike you'll have to walk along the road with no sidewalk. PM me for a hotel recommendation within $50-60 per night price range at the time of writing, but keep in mind that decent places can be full during high season.

Nightlife/Game

The two busiest bars/clubs are on Lonely Beach (the little village, not on the beach itself). Himmel and Ting Tong across the street. Mostly young western tourists, both male and female, and local Thai girls many of whom are either working girls or "civilians" who may be getting paid occasionally. Unless chasing backpacker poosy is your thing, the only other option there is pretty much shoring. One night I met with a couple of Russian girls in that area, but they were sketchy as fuck and attracted all kinds of guys, some of them also sketchy Russian mob types. While the Russian chicks were flirting with like half of the guys in the bar, a Thai girl approached me, said that she rented a room nearby and pretty much right away offered to fuck. I said I wouldn't pay, she said ok, so we went there for a quickie. She was horny as fuck, I banged her like in 5 minutes after we met. Bought her a beer after that and bounced. Thanks to the Russian chicks for DHV I guess? I'm also guessing the Thai girl bangs for money every now and then, so it was a good idea to carry a rubber in my pocket.

The following night I banged another Thai chick from the bar after approaching a few sets. Walked her to my room, banged a couple of times and walked her back to the bar where her friend was waiting. Same deal, probably a semi pro, but I said I wouldn't pay before we went to my place.

Met some cool travelers from Europe and shared some cool stories over drinks. Some of them have lived on the island for several years. Many of them smoke weed openly in the bars/cafes, but they say that police do raids occasionally. It also seems like the pace on the island is so slow that many people who stay there, local or foreign, become slow as well. Or maybe they were slow to begin with to not get bored there. I got so bored after a few days that I just left.

One of the negatives when it comes to nightlife, the scene is also so small that if you spend more than one night out you'll be running into the same people including the same sluts you either already banged or tried to bang.

In summary, I recommend Koh Chang as a nice place to chill on the beach, have some nice seafood and explore the he nature. However, bring your own girl if you can.

I am in Koh Chang right now, since Monday. Leaving this Sunday.

Going to Filou Cocktail club tonight - looks nice. Will also try nightgaming tomorrow night but - knowing I want to meet Asians and am very not interested about backpackers (unless from Latin America though) - I am still very unsure where to go between Lonely / White Sands.

I will be extra careful though ; driving my own motorbike but .. in high season, there is at least 1 dead in the roads every day. Its fucked up.
