Listen OP - there's nothing wrong with gay bars. Not a good place to meet your future wife, but that's OK. IMHO, they are more fun than most straight bars, everyone is generally friendlier, and the homos are completely harmless. I say they are harmless because they know you are straight. Fuck - gotta test out that gay club game in NYC. I have 2 gay friends (both so masculine that you wouldn't know that they are gay), but never went with them. In Europe though it is not that big.
