Legendary professional wrestling announcer "Mean" Gene Okerlund died at the age of 76, the WWE announced Wednesday.
Okerlund, who was dubbed "Mean" Gene by World Wrestling Federation wrestler and announcer Jesse "The Body" Ventura, rose to prominence as the voice of the WWF during the wrestling boom of the 1980s.
"A voice and sound track to an entire era of our industry," wrestling star and current WWE Executive Vice President Triple H tweeted. "He was the star of some of @WWE's most memorable segments. "Mean Gene" was beloved by all who got to work with him."
Okerlund is most well-known for his backstage and in-ring interviews with stars like Ventura, Hulk Hogan and "Macho Man" Randy Savage. Hogan's "Well, you know something 'Mean' Gene ..." response to a lot of Okerlund's questions became a catch phrase for wrestling fans.
Okerlund left the WWF in 1993 and signed with rival promotion World Championship Wrestling. Okerlund returned to the WWF in 2001 and eventually signed a lifetime contract with the organization.
Okerlund, who was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2006, made his last appearance on WWE TV on the 25th Anniversary of WWE Raw in January 2018.
