What Is Going On With The Economy? How Do I Know? DanDeLaCruz's Top 5 Sources

Maybe you saw my post here:

Or maybe you read about how I lost it all and came back:

Since I've been posting about investing and the economy, I've gotten asked a few times what books I recommend, and what blogs and websites I follow. There are two many to list, but I'll list my top 5 sources of information:

#1: Best movie I've seen this year on the state of the economy (good summary of the situation): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tj2s6vzErqY (movie)

#2: zerohedge.com (blog)
#3: ft.com (news site)
#4: Best economics book "How an Economy Grows and Why It Crashes" by Peter Schiff (book)
#5: Live market commentary http://www.bloomberg.com/tv Especially good in the mornings if you get up early and catch the Asia, Europe and then New York segments. (tv)

Apart from these I'll throw in:
investopedia.com for investment terms and tutorials

Hope that helps some of you guys...

Hit me up on this thread or on a PM if you have questions.

Later,

Dan

Some interesting news stories, you can google these:

*CEO of Goldman Sachs, Blankfein, hires top defense attorney.

*Credit Default Swaps on Bank of America go sky high... looks like they're going belly up soon.

*Rumors out there that margin hikes are coming this week for Gold like they did to silver, to temporarily beat down Gold. that + profit taking at the 2000 level may cause a nice dip/buying opportunity.

*QE3 might be launched without calling it QE3 (stealth mode)... you can bet that's what they're discussing in Jackson this week.

*Mining Stocks are starting they're long awaited climb towards true value based on Gold price. Check out the HUI: http://www.kitco.com/pop_windows/stocks/hui.html [Image: banana.gif]

I've recently taken 70k U.S. and put it all in metal (gold, and silver). With interest rates being what they are money in the bank is a losing proposition. I listen to guys, like Schiff, Bob Chapman, and Celente. Unlike Cramer, and Bartoromo they're not shills for the banks. I was turned on to the Austrian School of Economics a few years ago and this school of thought gets it.

Dan, I'm not sure how objective this video is...this guy is clearly has agenda...

Not sayin he's wrong or anything, but it's clearly a pitch.

I think academics or a panel of business and investors would be much more objective....

My two cents

Great thread concept.

Is now the best time to buy mining stocks or gold/silver etfs? I'm afraid gold has reached its peak.

Gold has not peaked. I'm no expert, but if you want to look for a bubble you have to look at the tangible gold, and silver sales the world over. When you see the "paper" gold shares getting moved around and pumped up by speculators that's when you know the bubbleb has begun. People and institutions are buying metal to hedge their bets in inflationary times. We could be heading into hyperinflation. I would get silver because it's still affordable.

I used to think academics used to be objective. watch the documentary inside job. some of my favorite academic authors on central banking and deans of top business school are full of it.

No doubt....that's why a discussion panel of different interests better addresses upside and downside risks....as opposed to a 'pitchbook' protocol.

I believe 'the fed' has a huge interest in a lot of the economic journals in the US...so you can see how they can bias academic 'opinion'. Also try Bob Prechter...he is a bit extreme and I don't agree with his Elliottwave stuff, but his analysis is still excellent. He is in the same camp (partly anyway) with Schiff et al.

Dan, if I can add a few recommendations to your list:
6. http://globaleconomicanalysis.blogspot.com/ (Mish breaks it down and really knows his stuff; his analysis is airtight)
7. http://www.investorsinsight.com/blogs/jo...fault.aspx (John Mauldin is another one who breaks it down for investors)
8. http://www.calculatedriskblog.com/ (Good reporting, but they really have the best economic charts out there..check out the graph galleries link on their page. Charts that tell the 'real' story of what's going on with our economy).
9. http://market-ticker.org/ (good group of writers who read between the lines and call BS a lot. Good market analysis too.
10. http://theeconomiccollapseblog.com/ (purely doomsdayer, but interesting change-up).
