Hi folks
figured I'd talk about my home city and give some details. I know this is quite an "american-centric" site, and I have seen a great surge in yanks and canucks visiting the city. I also work in hotels, so i feel my info is a step above some other residents of the city, seeing as its my job to recommend things to do etc
so,
Glasgow, voted both europes friendliest and stabbiest city
Culture
What fucking culture?
This city rides on the past. Glasgow is known for no bullshit.
Back in the 80's, if you were a band or comedian and you did well in front of a Glaswegian (Glaz-weej-yin) croud, you could perform anywhere in the world.
Transport
When visiting the city, you can pretty much walk everywhere. The city is laid out in a grid formation, very similar to most american cities. My advice is to stay north of the river, and south of Buchanen Bus station.
There are 3 main streets, Argyle St, Buchanen St and Sauchihall (SUCK-EE-HALL)
Argyle runs from east to west in the south, sauchihall is the same but to the north, and Buchanen runs from north to south, in between both Streets.
Food
Depending on what you like, there is so much to choose from, suiting all budgets. My favourites currently are Revolucion De Cuba and Opium (oriental fusion)
So-called "Daygame"
Non existant on locals, anyone who responds to your advances on the street in daylight is not worth your time. There is always a chance you will come away with a sore face as well. Not recommended
Nightlife
Drugs and dancing? Subclub
Sweatbox with rock music? Priory
Gullible students with questionable age? CAMPUS
Gullible Uni students? ARK
Mixed bad? FIREWATER
Intimate Ye Olde Pub to show off your cashflow? Sloans (my favourite)
The People
Glasgow can be an intimidating city, when out at night, no matter the day, strangers will ask you for money, don't be intimidated, if you've said more than 3 words to them and you've broken your stride, you've fucked up. Keep walking on, try and be a good judge of character
The Girls;
Often responsive to accents, but you don't want to be that creepy foreign guy which I hear poor guys geting labelled way too often. Honestly, your accent will either be great help or a greater hindrance.
To "git' yir' hole'" it's best to go out at the weekends to a place where Uni students flock. Otherwise, most people have predetermined plans and can be quite responsible.
I'd imagine Tinder is your friend, although I don't buy into any social media.
The Guys;
can be protective and very lassiez fare at the same time. If you're stepping on someones toes they'll let you, and its best to back off with a humble apology and a smile
What to Do (touristy stuff)
Necropolis. Beautiful graveyard, with some beautiful gothic cathedrals (st mungos) and the oldest building in glasgow (Provans Lorship, 1448(?)) a 5 minute walk away.
Continuing south from Lords Provanship, you will find yourself on the High St/Saltmarket, the oldest street in glasgow. I can go on and on about this cities history but I'll sum it up here.
Glasgow is a city that originally stemmed from a small fishing enclave. christianity came, and with that came money, bureaucracy and a rise in population.
Fast forward to the 1600's, Glasgow was further built up by money made from the slave trade, cotton plantations, tobacco plantations, land in the caribbean etc.
At one point, Jamaica was owned by a few Glaswegians(feel free to correct me on this.
There are a few notable buildings, The GOMA for one, which was originally a mansion of a tobacco and slave trader, which still stands to this day.
Okay, I know this is a bit of a scatterbrained post, but I felt the need to give some info on the city.
If anyone plans on coming here soon, please let me know. I'm opening a hotel in the centre, and can offer some cheap (but shitty) accomodation as well as better advice on where to go and what to do.
I look forward to contributing to this site, cheers guys!
