It is clear that in order get companies to do what we want, we must stop giving money to them. Microsoft is no different. Unless you are a video editor, or a game developer, you should not be using Windows.

The great thing about Linux is that you can be sure that you are not being spied on. It is also much more customizable.

Currently, I'm using Linux Mint. It's great if you are a Windows user and you want to switch. It very closely resembles windows, with all the buttons you are familiar with.

Linux is a PITA if you need to install software the distro does not come with.

Compiling?? Fuck that, I'll stick to my MBP, thank you very much!

I can't tell if you're trolling me or not. That thread was not about the Linux OS. That was about a user with the name "linux."

This thread is off to a great start.

I would have to disagree with that. I've been running Linux on my laptop for 6 months, and have not needed to compile any software.

Linux has gotten much more user-friendly over the years, to the point where it can be used as an alternative to windows without many problems.

Well Linux mint is a distro for softies.....

Running Linux has it's pros and cons vs windows. Obvious con is that a lot of software doesn't work with it. Although that gap has closed massively in say the last 10 years. Open office or libreoffice are really good. You can certainly run older hardware using linux. I'm still running an amd athalon 64 processor.

Another big pro is that it doesn't update all the time and when it does update you hardly ever have to reboot. Windows 7 seems like a self generating update machine where actually using the pc seems secondary to it updating itself continually.

I agree, OP, in principal, that we should not be giving microsoft money. I unplugged years ago.

I'd stick with MS, it's hard to get games running on Linux and Wine is just too much work.

I have a shitty computer, 2GB RAM Celeron processor...I installed Ubuntu since it should run faster but nope, it still keeps freezing up. Dunno what to do with it.

On my normal rig I run windows 8.1 with Startisback. But I have a dell laptop someone gave me that has no power whatsoever. I swapped the HDD with an SSD and threw on a lite linux install. Considerably better performance.

I like linux(both OS and member), and I am pondering doing an arch linux install on my main PC. But I don't know if I am ready to take the leap yet.

Ah man, I should have been more clear.....

I have a shitty computer that I passed down to my parents for their primitive interweb needs (ordering dominos, youtube, dad looking at porn, mom getting recipes). I tried using it last time I was over and holy fuck Mozilla was slow as fuck, fucking rig kept freezing all the time. I said fuck it and turned it off. Linux seemed like a good set up since it's impossible for it to get a virus or malware.

My personal rigs have an i5 (2nd and 4th gen) with 16GB RAM, 1GB graphics card and 24" monitor. One laptop and one desktop. Might give them the desktop but they'll fill it up with malware and those retarded toolbars.

puppy linux or lubuntu should help out if there is nothing wrong with your machine. Both are lightweight OS.

To be honest I prefer the other Linux thread to this one.

But about the operating system, I find later versions of Ubuntu to be too dumbed down.

I used to run a distro called Crunchbang (spelled #!) that used Debian and Ubuntu repos but was way more lightweight. I see that it's discontinued now but there's a continuation project apparently called Crunchbang plus plus (#!++) and I recommend intermediate level and above users to check it out.

Or run full blown Debian.

...

You don't have DIY things to get companies to do what you want. Microsoft is changing because of iOS and Google, not because people using open source Linux.

I've used Linux as a parallel system on my Chromebook so I could use Skype (Ubuntu I think). It's not that intuitive. I appreciate people who use it, I think it's awesome, and I worked at a big company that wrote a lot of software with it for POS and transaction systems...but Microsoft is thinking about Google and iOS, not nerds who use Linux.

I'm pretty nerdy (used to root my own Android and install Linux on PC), and even I don't find it terribly intuitive.

I am no Computer Genius, yet I have been successfully and enjoyably using Ubuntu for what I am guessing is a couple of years now.

For the best possible experience, complete this free interactive course on learning the Command Line:
https://www.codecademy.com/learn/learn-the-command-line

And for a quick refresher course that doesn't hold your hand as much, check this out:

I'm not a Computer Gamer so I'm not sure how Ubuntu stacks up with Windows or Mac OSX for that sort of thing.

Not sure if you're trying to start shit or not but I would seriously advise against it.

Fuck Linux. Leave it on the servers where it belongs. Even Android which is Linux based works half-assed compared to iOS. I tinkered with Linux and used Mint a while back and it's not worth the hassle unless all you're going to do is get an underpowered netbook to surf the web on. I even installed Ubuntu Touch on a tablet and it was complete and utter shit.

I wouldn't go as far to say "fuck linux" just because it isn't your personal preference.

I like Linux because I like to have full control of my device(which is why I really don't like iOS' features), I also like to have full customization of it. The problem that it seems as though you and other people who dislike Linux is the learning curve. It is much more difficult to use compared to microsoft, and especially iOS.

No it's not the learning curve it's the pain of digging through repositories to find stuff and then not having the dependencies that you need once you've found it and then to go digging for the right place to Apt-Get it from.

Then if you like to game, Linux leaves you out in the cold with a few exceptions. Like I said, if you're just going to surf the web then it's fine but otherwise leave it off the desktop/laptop and on an Apache Server where it belongs.

I run an AS/400 system all day long but wouldn't want that shit on my personal machine even in the 1980s when it was considered the shit.

You're frustrated and not seeing the bigger picture. Ask yourself why iOS works so well?

Maybe because it's produced by one company for one product and is closed source, with hundreds of programmers and engineers ensuring it's optimal for that one product-- like the iphone. No one owns Linux and the point of linux is to be flexible enough to run on anything, like all the various cell phones and computers out there without anyone having to pay royalties on it. Before you say fuck linux, take a look at this and all the various great things that Linux enables people to do.
