About 15 of that 35 came in the last 4 months. The other 20 came in the previous 10 months.

Generally the most fat loss you're ever going to see without starving yourself is two pounds a week. So in three months you could theoretically lose 24-25 lbs. Although your body adapts, so it'll probably be more around 20 lbs if you stick to it. If you slip up some or miss some days, more in the 16-18 lb range.

YMG if you stick to that regimen (no alcohol, no calories in beverages, no desserts, etc) there's no way you can't lose weight. It's thermodynamically impossible!

By the way, I've seen your pictures you're not 25%, you're definitely lower. What method of body composition did you use?

If you're working out 3 or 4 hours a day, and eating a paleo-style diet low in carbs and high in fiber, I wouldn't worry too much about how much you eat. Just eat slower and remain conscious of when you are full to avoid overeating, if that makes sense. Much easier to do when your only real commitments for the day are training sessions.

Plus, why the rush to lose so much weight so fast? You may end up with loose skin and stretch marks. 30 to 35 pounds of fat loss 6 months seems about right. That much weight in 3 months is crazy, but if you can pull it off more power too you.

Gringoed: I think I may have gotten a bit rounder fairly recently. I have to admit I was shocked by the trainer's assessment. The trainer here attached some electrodes to my hands and feet and did what apparently is a fairly accurate electric means of measuring bodyfat. The best way to do it is in some underwater submersion tank, but they don't have that here.

UgSlayer - You mentioned this in the LatAm diet thread and you are right - no matter how the food is processed, ultimately if you eat too much you will get fat - even if the food is healthy and organic. I think paleo is a good idea. I'm just not sure how much exercise I can sustain on a diet that entirely lacks carbs along the lines of brown rice and oatmeal. I'll give it a shot. I just got here from Bangkok and have already been eating significantly better. I'll see how I'm doing in two weeks.

Like Gringoed said, it is highly unlikely I won't make a lot of progress.

I want a fuckin beer.

YMG- Bioelectrical impedence is highly inaccurate, especially for establishing a baseline. Try taking the test when you're dehydrated, then drink a couple litres of water, then try again and you'll see what I mean.

If you're going to trust the test for measuring progress, MAKE SURE you're about the same level of hydration. First thing in the morning is best.

Personally, I'd trust calipers over BEI.

A little advice on food, don't try to eat much less or your body will start driving you crazy until you binge. Rather, eat smart, and give your body the nutrients it needs especially protein. Paleo and slow-carb are what I'd recommend, although your regimen seems good.

I'd only worry about the following:

- Eat at a slight caloric deficit (I imagine you know what your maintenance calories are)
- Make sure you get enough protein (1g per pound of body weight)
- Avoid carbs except for first thing in the morning and right after workout.
- Let Muay Thai take care of the rest

You do that and I guarantee you'll shed the pounds pretty quickly.

Another thing to remember that in Phuket's heat and humidity, your water weight and retention is going to be a little haywire. So your weight is going to fluctuate 2-3 lbs each day depending on how dehydrated you are, how much you've been sweating, how much you've been working out, etc.

@Entropy, I think you're right. You got a sense of what the food is like there and I would be eating that kind of stuff on a regular basis in addition to sticking with the workouts.

I gassed out so quickly during training today. I couldnt even finish my fifth round - I don't know what caused me to lose so much stamina so quickly - the last three weeks I've been really slacking in Bangkok as far as training goes though, so it's somewhat understandable.

Looking forward to hanging in early September.

@Gringoed - yeah, I don't want to think that I'm in denial but it's very hard for me to imagine that I am 27 percent body fat. I've seen guys who are 27 percent body fat and I really don't think I'm that high.

My goal right now is to lose 10 pounds by September 1st.

10 pounds of fat loss in 2.5 weeks is too fast. MAX you should do is 2 pounds a week, otherwise everything will backfire. 2 pounds of fat = 7000 caloric deficit, or 1000 calories per day. Don't have a greater deficit than that, trust me.

Yup slow carb has been the best diet I've ever tried. I've been on it for about 9 months running. Very easy and fun. I lost fat even when I wasn't exercising. Everybody is different though, and there's nothing wrong with Paleo except some controversy about sugar in fruits especially fructose.

My original travelling plan included 2 months of Muay Thai training but when i was there i was so fucked from smoking weed 24/7 in Cambodia and some opium in Laos.Add to that all the beer drinking and my fucked up bowels. I couldn't run 50 meters without coughing my longs out.

I bailed on this plan because i could't see myself run 8 to 12 kilometers a day from the start of training. Perhaps one day after i've been back in Holland for a while and are in better starting shape.
I used to do lots of martial arts training back home but getting old and stiff fast.

Gringoed - my 10 pound weight loss goal takes into account the fact that I will inevitably lose water weight. I am taking into account water weight loss and fat loss.

three weeks there made it worth it.

but my trip back was pure hell.

2 hour ferry ride
8 hour car ride to bangkok
9 hour flight to dubai
14 hour flight to jfk
miss flight at jfk
8 hour layover
1 hour flight to dca

why didnt i just drive from nyc? or take the train or anything else similar? because I had been up for 48 hours with no sleep and could not even think straight at all, it was like being in another universe.

hell. wiped away all the bene's of an island vacation in a blink.

but i'd do it all over again if i could make the time

I wouldn't mind doing a few weeks of Muay Thai mainly for fitness but I'm so out of shape I don't think I'd be able to keep up with the training. I'm guessing they really push you hard. Anyone know of any courses that are designed for seriously unfit people like myself?

You'll be fine - they will adapt to your level of training. They understand that everyone was, at some point, a beginner. Any muay thai gym that caters exclusively to professionals will run out of business quickly.

Team Quest has recently started offering MMA/Grappling classes as well, although I can't comment on them because I"ve only been doing muay thai.

Thanks for the info. I haven't tried Mauy Thai so it would be my first time trying it and first time in Thailand. Also seems like Phuket might be a better option than BKK or Pattaya. I've heard the prices in Phuket tend to be higher, in general, but are still fairly inexpensive.

Any tips for a one month poker/MMA/girl trip in asia?

Cambodia and Philippines allow poker as far as i know.

And for a total beginner in martial art, what type of gym should i look for? It seems a bit intimidating joining a club full of pros.

I really don't know how to spend a month in Asia. All i know is around Christmas i would go to thailand.

If you want to train MMA and have never trained before, check out PhuketTopTeam.com. They have pros there, but believe most of their training will be in closed sessions. I have a friend training there now and says it's really good.
