Asia and Latin America - Biz Opps

I am a Canadian who lives in Korea, have a decent Korea ability (3 out of 5 on TOPIK, 5 allows matriculation into university), and will be getting a Korean "green card" once I marry my partner and have an OCI (Overseas Indian Citizenship) because of my ancestry that allows me to invest and conduct business within India as an Indian. Unfortunately I do not speak any Indian languages but do speak India's language of business fluently. I think I just want to position myself for a career with a Korean company that does trade with India, because Korea and India recently signed a bilateral trade agreement. I would have an edge on other Koreans because I speak English natively and will be able to do visa free entry and business within India. They would speak Korean better than me, and for now I cannot be employed until I get married, which is not on the short term horizon.

This article, in addition to my recent revelation that I am better connected in Mexico and Colombia than I realized, have started to make me think about potential opportunities in the future as a middleman of sorts between Asia and Latam.

Countries in Asia of interest:

-South Korea
-China
-Taiwan
-Vietnam
-Indonesia
-Cambodia

Countries in LatAm of interest:

-Mexico
-Colombia
-Brazil? (not sure if I want to invest in learning Portuguese)

Is anyone already operating to some degree between Asia and Latin America in a business context?

I guess we can throw Africa into the mix as another frontier resource-rich continent. Pitt, I"m looking at you.

One of my first trips to Bangkok, I met a group of guys on Khao San Road who were in Thailand to buy silver and silver crafts to bring back and sell in South America - I believe they were from Chile. The guy said he owned a growing tour business down there that had several different locations around the country but they were making a killing sellling the stuff they were bringing back. It was only their 2nd or 3rd trip but he seemed pretty happy with the results so far.

This was about 3 years ago.

Hey YMG,

Do you think you could compile a reading list of important books about international business and politics? It would be useful for guys like me who are trying to learn more about the game of global conquest.

Thanks.

Sardino,
when you say "international business", which countries in particular? As saying "international business" is very vague. One advice, focus on a niche or small section rather than being a generalist. Applies to most things, specially biz and women.

I'm currently learning as much as I can about Japanese culture learning on my own Japanese. At the same time, I'm also reading books about China, chinese culture and learning everything I can about China and doing business there. China is way too big to be ignored. Only a fool would do so...I plan on hitting China next spring/summer to immerse myself into chinese culture and enroll at a local uni there for 1-2 semesters to get to a respectable level in Mandarin as I want to get a piece of that humoungous market. I'll be focusing on relations between China and Brasil. After I have China in check, I'll do the same in Japan and do the same with relations between Nihon and Brasil.

Here's an awesome book on China that a fly chinese babe referred to me: The Chinese Mind: Understanding Traditional Chinese Beliefs and their Influence on Contemporary Culture. Must read for anyone interested in learning about China and understanding what it takes to do biz there. In the same category, I'd suggest China Entrepreneurs. Awesome read, I'm half way through this book.

For Japan, just finished reading Japan unmasked by Boyé Lafayette de Mente. This guy is a living encylopedia about Japan. Read every book by him about Japan that you can find. The book I just finished Japan Unmasked is an amazing look into the Japanese psyche, mind and culture. Unmissable book on Japan.

A classic and must read book on Brasil, a bit old but still an awesome resource for anyone serious about learning about Brasil and what makes Brasil Brasil, is the Brazilians by Joseph Page. A must must read, even a reference on Brasil.

Anyone can recommend other similar books on Brasil/China/Japan?

I'm putting my money on Brazil. To the point of putting Spanish on hold and going boot camp on learning Portuguese. A coworker found a website that was advertising mechanic jobs in Brazil, paying $31 hr. The dickhead wouldn't give up the website. I've got to get motivated and find a position down there. I've got 3 job offers now paying between $120-200K. Location sucks though. I'd settle in Brazil for $50K right now.

Not sure, probably offshore. Brazil is hurting for skilled labor, that I know. They are hiring Americans, it's hard to find the resources online. If I come up with anything I'll let you know.

I often wonder if you could just walk around from place to place with a coding tool and make a good living. You could do it here.
Its called an Autologics it does key and module/ecm reprogramming.
I couldn't move there but if I had to its nice to know..
