Bali (Indonesia) Recommendations

Hey guys,

Found a thread on Bali a while back but found it to be quite dated. I've been working my tail off this summer and will be working it off again this coming spring (60+ hour weeks)--- so I am looking for some R&R over thanksgiving weekend.

Found some cheap flights to Bali and was thinking about spending 7-10 days over there. I've heard it's a beautiful place and would love some time on the beach, light drinking, and doing some eco tourism.

Normally I take some wild adventure trips but I'm looking to stay low key and just rejuvenate on this one. I also plan to take my girlfriend with.

Any recommendations as to things to do, places to see, where to stay, things to avoid, etc?

Budget isn't really an issue-- just looking for a good (safe) relaxing time.

Thank you,

-CC

I went to Bali when I was a kid. It is full of drunk degenrate "bogans" (i.e. what you call chavs in the U.K. or maybe trailer trash ij the U.S.) from Australia and NZ.

It looks beautiful though...

Anyone have anything positive to say about it?

I try not to be super negative about Bali, because maybe it was just my experience and the time of the year (February), but I went last year and it turned out to be really disappointing. I also have other friends who have gone and liked it. But it was full of white trash people, as Australia Sucks said, and two of the big popular beaches that I had heard about were overrun with trash. It was crazy. I found some nicer beaches when I moved hotels and was near the St. Regis, but overall I still didn't like Bali that much. Ubud ended up being kind of cool, but that was about it on my trip there.

Thailand and the Philippines had much much better beaches, where I had a much better time, for about the same price.

I highly recommend going to Mt. Batur to watch the sunrise, regularly the cloud level is too low to have a good view but when it isn't it's great. Drive up early and pack a warm coat it's really cold.

In the north in Lovina you can go dolphin watching they also have some really good "arak" (moonshine) up there. Couldn't walk for a day.

If you head over to Lombok then in the south they have a smaller group of less known islands, not very much night entertainment but a much less travelled path.

If you're traveling with a girlfriend def choose Canggu if you want to surf. If you don't care about being by the beach and just want some quiet R&R then Ubud in the center of the island is good too, and has a cooler climate.

If you want something a little more upscale choose Seminyak, but it can get pretty noisy and wild there on the weekends too.

Don't worry about "budget" bali is retarded cheap.

Also make sure to rent a motorbike, they are only $5US per day and help you get around the island.

Thanks for all your help guys.

Booked a couple nights in Seminyak and a couple at the Conrad Bali (Hilton Diamond member) so I get free breakfast and drinks at night... plus they're on opposing sides of the island.

Love the recommendations... thank you very much.

I also just added a flight to Tokyo before I come back stateside... may be a little cold, but would imagine Tokyo would be pretty around christmas time.

-Dive the WWII wrecks at Tulamben
-Stay in Ubud and Seminyak. Check out the Monkey Forest nature reserve, watch a kecak dance, get a massage, buy a batik or selendang and a wood or stone carving.
-Avoid fucking Kuta like the plague
-Eat "babi guling" (roast suckling pig) and "bibik tutur" (whole smoked duck). Check out the "waroengs" (traditional Balinese restaurants). Ask your hotel staff to help you out with finding these places. Avoid all the awful "cafes" that the digital nomad crews hang out at

Every RvF thread I've seen about Bali has been negative, and I strongly suspect it's because of Kuta.

Banging:

-My favourite demographic in Bali to nail is 22-29 y.o. EU officials in minor posts on holiday living their Eat. Pray. Laugh dream. Lots of cute Romanian/French/Luxembourgish chicks
-Banging the natives will probably require Bahasa, sorry. They are some delicious little hotbodies though
-Sheilas are hit or miss
-Had a really nice bang with a California girl from UCSD doing a study for her Marine Biology programme. Make sure to talk to people at your dive resort!

Fast edit: Bali is the final holdout of the ancient Hindu Majapahit culture in heavily-Islamized Indonesia. Probe your guides gently about the historical reasons for this and how it manifests in Balinese society.

if you want eat pray love chicks you better stay in canggu or ubud. (not much seminyak or kuta as those places are more aussie oriented). There are nice palces in seminyak but they are gonna be alot more expensive. (expect hotels aorund 150USD a night and expensive food too, so better to avoid it). ofcourse there are cheap hotels but they wont be as nice as the ones in canggue or ubud.
if your main focus is girls i would just head out to jakarta.
