The Congressional Elections Thread (the Senate and the House of Representatives)

I'm starting this thread to keep track of both Senate and House of Representatives elections throughout the fifty states, as a hopefully ongoing RVF project.

If one lesson is to be taken from the 2016 Presidential Race, it is that the establishment in Congress is willing to shamelessly cuck to destroy a populist candidate within its own party.

The possibility of this dynamic has to be recognized as a primary weakness, rooted out, and greatly eliminated by focusing on the U.S. Senate elections, which occur every two years (Senators are elected in staggered elections for 6 year terms), and House of Representatives elections that occur every two years.

The idea is to track the formally stated policy positions, as well as voiced support or party-treason toward our candidates, from any sitting Senator or Representative as well as those of their challengers in election years.

I'm of the opinion that its time for the base to bring an A-level political game, and mobilizing an informed base for Congressional elections is the way to accomplish that.

Granted, it is a little late this season to make any significant inroads in many states. In these elections, many incumbents will be running unchallenged from within their own party. However, I submit that it is important to start now for the next election.

It is also important to let treacherous Senators and Representatives know our displeasure in this election season, and that we will be working to unseat them in the next election.

In order to make the thread searchable, via a quick reading scan, for any RVF member to be able to find updated information for the state that he is in:

I only suggest that, as a general format, we title posts with the bolded State names, ie: New York.

Under which, we can detail information about sitting congressmen, their challengers, or other pertinent information for that state as warranted.

Of course, posts that aren't meant to supply such information need not follow this format.

Pennslyvania - U.S. Senate - November 8th, 2016 election

PA has two U.S. Senate Seats for which Senators are elected in staggered elections.

This year, Republican incumbent Pat Toomey's seat is up for election. He is running unopposed by another Republican.

There will be another election in two years, wherein Democrat Senator Bob Casey will face challengers.

This season, Toomey is up against Democrat Katie McGinty.

Most Polling shows Toomey ahead by a relatively large margin.

Pat Toomey as a candidate:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Toomey

Toomey attended La Salle Academy in Providence, Rhode Island before earning a B.A. in government from Harvard College. Toomey was hired by Chemical Bank in 1984, where he was involved in currency swap transactions. In 1986, Toomey was hired by Morgan, Grenfell & Co., where he dealt in multiple foreign currencies, interest rates, and currency-related derivatives.

Toomey is mixed conservative-liberal in terms of his support for policy. His major issues seem to be lowering taxes, lowering debt, and financial deregulation. Broadly stated he's: pro-life, anti-gun, mixed on LGBT issues, anti-environment (or pro-energy, pro-logging depending on your preference for phrasing), and consistently conservative on immigration issues.

Toomey's record in regard to supporting Trump:

Today, the NYT was able to feature a front page article using Toomey as an example for Republicans who are speaking out against Trump and, to read the NYT spin it, who are likely going to vote for Hillary Clinton.

As Donald Trump Incites Feuds, Other G.O.P. Candidates Flee His Shadow - NYT

Senator Patrick J. Toomey of Pennsylvania, in a conference call with reporters the same day, was less subtle. “Donald Trump is in a category unto himself,” Mr. Toomey said, predicting that his state’s voters “will make a completely separate decision” between the top of the ticket and the Senate campaign this year.

That is increasingly the hope of nearly every Republican leader across the country.

The above article is good for also ferreting out other congresspeople who are weakening the party by attacking Trump. Note that the picture used in the article shows Toomey, center, with a concerned look on his face.

Commentary: Advice to Trump: Seek to unite and listen more - by Pat Toomey at Philly.com

At the beginning of the primary process, I endorsed Marco Rubio for president. I felt then, and still do, that Rubio possessed the best combination of policy knowledge, dedication to conservative principles, and an inspiring vision to successfully lead our country in these troubled times. I regret that he did not prevail. When the Pennsylvania primary came along last month, I made clear whom I voted for, and it was not Donald Trump.
...
Trump was not my first, second, or third choice. I object to much in his manner and his policies. His vulgarity, particularly toward women, is appalling. His lack of appreciation for Constitutional limits on executive powers is deeply concerning. I disagree with his proposals to ban Muslims, to give government more eminent domain powers, to be neutral between Israel and its enemies, and several others. In short, I find his candidacy highly problematic.
...
As a result, like many Pennsylvanians, I'm not pleased with the two choices we have.
...
As a Republican elected official, I am inclined to support the nominee of my party. That doesn't mean I must always agree with him. I didn't agree with Mitt Romney, John McCain, or George W. Bush on everything, but I supported them. That said, Trump is different from previous nominees. There could come a point at which the differences are so great as to be irreconcilable. I hope that doesn't happen, but I have never been a rubber stamp for my party's positions or its candidates.
...
...you must unite our country. For too long, too many politicians have sought to divide us by race, sex, income, and geography, pitting Americans against one another in a cynical effort to advance their political interests rather than our nation. We need to recognize that our shared values and common interests are much greater than our differences.
...
Finally, rather than attacking those who speak a contrary word about you or your positions, consider the value of constructive advice. Many of your critics are nothing more than political opponents who want your defeat. But some of your critics actually share the deep frustration with the direction of our country and our political class that has propelled your candidacy. Sometimes your critics might have a point. If you listen more, and talk less, you might even win some of them over. You will have to in order to be successful.

Pa. Sen. Pat Toomey: Trump comments on judge 'deeply offensive,' but he may still support him - Philly.com

“This comment about this judge is deeply offensive, it’s ridiculous, it’s outrageous,” Toomey, a Republican, told reporters in the Capitol. “The idea that someone’s ethnicity tells you something about how they’re going to judge cases is just completely wrong and it’s ridiculous and it’s offensive.”

"That family just deserves respect and acknowledgment of the huge sacrifice they made and that's it and so I thought anything beyond that was completely inappropriate," Toomey said.

US Senator Pat Toomey Still Not Ready To Endorse Trump (July 21st, 2016)

“Look, I’ve been very clear about my reservations about Donald Trump. I still hope to get to the point where I’m fully supporting him.”

Tawa: ‘Obviously, he’s the Republican nominee.’

“He is, and I will never support Hillary Clinton under any circumstances, ever. But before I make an endorsement, I do want to spend a little more time watching and listening.”

My take on Toomey:

He is barely acceptable on policy, given his anti-gun legislation, but overall he is much better than any current oppositional democrat. The Democrats aren't helped by the recent progressive shift that has them all campaigning on SJW platforms.

That being said, Toomey is clearly a liability when it comes to shifting the nation away from progressive politics. His quotes, and his editorial (in a progressive newspaper), are most frequently used by progressives against Donald Trump. That's their ultimate use, and whether or not Toomey sees that or he feels that he is merely protecting himself is irrelevant to the political effects of his felt-need to social-signal to liberals.

Toomey will probably win this election, as he is winning over the Democratic challenger and there isn't any Republican who can challenge him if it were even possible to enter the race at this point. However, he should be campaigned against as a Republican liability in six years and he should be ousted. Toomey is an ex-banking industry guy, and I'd be surprised if he wasn't on their pay-roll in some fashion. He's clearly a milquetoast cuck in terms of social politics, and as such I see him as a particularly damaging gatekeeper for progressive politics; especially given his outspoken criticism of Trump.

In the mean-time, broad dissatisfaction should be expressed by the base, against Toomey's political clumsiness, and he should be isolated and named for what he through the next time that his seat is up for election.

Yeah bro, let's do it! Imo, it's time to move the train into overdrive in the political arena. It'll take more than a thread, but hopefully keeping up-to-date information available on these politicians, as well as awareness of upcoming elections, will motivate readers to influence these elections in the real world. Any resultant added pressure on these politicians to not be so loose with their lips is also a good thing.
