Safety / Protection In South America

Do you guys recommend any anti-theft devices, money pouches, belts, etc. I'm thinking of getting a pouch but it might be annoying going through border crossings or uncomfortable.

My "anti-theft devices" are my right and left hands. Better known as "K" and "O".

Nice. haha. I almost got robbed in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. When they saw me stand up and look like I was about to throw down, they backed off.

To the OP, it would be a good idea to have a small bottle of pepper spray. If not for would be robbers then for the zillions of feral dogs down there. I was attacked by a dog.

Good advice, I would leave the pepper spay home and I would just give up the loot if you are unlucky enough to get ran on upon by goons. In general SA is quite safe. I only had two "incidents" when I was there back in '08. The first one was in Peru, I was being a cheap bastard and took the local cheap southbound bus to Trujillo from Mancora. To make a long story short at a check point some cops took my passport and refused to give it back until I gave up some cash. The second time was in BA, My boys and I just got off from the "Creamfields" Electronica concert when we got lost looking for the subway at 6am, and ended up
in this neighborhood that was surrounded by tall gray buildings that looked just like Housing projects. Sure enough, a little homie with a large butcher knife came running demanding "plata." My boys were a little coked up and we ready to go to battle with this dude however, I know from personal experience you dont fuck with thugs in their own turf. Fortunately, out of nowhere the cops came and chased the little fucker away.

Some thoughts on Pepper Spray as I carry it at work everyday. First, this should be obvious but I'll say it anyway, you can never take it on an airplane. If you buy pepper spray, get the good stuff that's high scoville made from peppers and not that weak chemical mace. When in doubt buy from a law enforcement supply store local or online or a good gun shop. If you do get a holster for it don't store it upside down, this will make some brands slowly leak out the propellant over time so when you do try to use it, it doesn't work.
If you have a choice between the foam and the aerosol I recommend the foam. It shoots further and is easier to aim, it generally leaves a dye which makes it easy to identify the perps later , IS FAR LESS LIKELY TO BLOW BACK ON YOU, and sticks better to your target. If you use an aerosol type spray in a cab or confined space you will be hit too!
Shake your can regularly. If your able buy an extra can and learn it's spray pattern and distance. Shoot some in a cup and rub a little in the corner of your eyes or nose or inhale it second hand. Man up, cause if your ever hit with it or near someone hit a little familiarity can make a big difference in how you react. When your firing it aim for the eyes, nose, mouth and ears, after that any bare skin. If you have the time before you escape and really want to teach a lesson aim for their crotch, it will prob soak through or when they try to wash it will activate there. A lot of people don't realize that after the burn wears off and you try to wash it off, it reactivates and you need to be REAL CAREFUL where the water goes. I've seen a combative inmate BEG for deconamination after some foam worked it's way down south.
If you get hit try your best to relax, your eyes will want to close and you'll have more snot coming out of your nose then you ever thought possible.. if your fair skinned like me it will feel like your skin is melting, try to calm your gasping breaths. Rinse with COLD water(you don't want warm water to open your pores and let it in deeper) being VERY careful where the water rinses (hunch over to protect your balls). You need to rinse for awhile and also a fan blowing on your skin helps with the burning feeling.

^^^ I put the pepper spray in my check luggage. TSA never removed it. It was small bottle though. Only a little thicker than a thumb and maybe 3 inches long and it had a safety button you unlock with a flick of your thumb in order to use it. I tested it out in my driveway and I'll be damn, it shot pretty far. A jet of cayenne spray about a good 20ft surprisingly, it was sort of an orange-brown colored fluid. A breeze kicked up just a second after I sprayed and I felt some of the blowback. Enough to know that the shit works. I kept it in my front pocket and when I was walking in Rio at night, and saw someone sketchy coming my way down the street, I had it inside my fist with the thumb on the button ready to go at a second's notice. It was small enough to hide in your palm just walking around. Most the time, I just kept it in the front pocket. I'm all for fighting if it's safe to do so, I've trained in martial arts for the last 4 years and I can handle myself fine in the streets I'm sure. But a blast of cayenne pepper in the face will end it a lot quicker. Especially if you have multiple attackers like almost had in San Pedro, Chile. Only thing is at close range, you can easily blind yourself as well if you aren't careful. Then like I said before, there's always the street dogs. Most of them are docile, but not all of them.

According to TSA's site, is ok in checked luggage as long as it has a "safety" to prevent accidental discharge

but NOT in carry-on of course

If anyone´s interested in seing Tropa de Elite (Elite Squad) only in portuguese here´s the link for youtube:

I saw this movie before and after I was in Rio. After I understood it better.

About criminality in Rio, anyone saying it´s not dangerous was just lucky or comes from a worser place. The amount of slums you pass when you come from the airport to the city center is brutal.
The fact that any doormen of a regular apartment have bulletproofvest and the non stoping in red lights by taxis because their scared of being robbed, is a hint on how Rio is NOT SAFE.
When I was in Rio, Drug dealers torched a random bus with innocent people inside in retaliation on the busts that are happening in Rio because of the 2016 Olympics.

If you let your guard down in Rio there´s a high probabilty you will be robbed.
