At the same time,

general existential purposelessness, postmodern cultural dystopia, and social hyper ennui lead some people to take deathly risks in order to feel alive.

Is this normal that people dont pull the parking break in the US? I always put the manual transmission in speed one when parking we dont even leave it in neutral.

Must be my paranoid EE genes

Sad way to go. This is a good reminder that one small mistake and you can be gone...
On a manual transmission the common course of action is to set the parking brake and leave it in first gear.

In the US, over 90% of the vehicles sold these days are automatics. People should be using the parking brake, but in reality they don't. If people saw how small the pin that served as "Park" in the transmission was, a lot more would probably use it.

No great conspiracy here. Heroin and other opiates are a mother fucker. I don't understand why people like them so much. They're dirty drugs and they leave you incapacitated. Why take a drug that leaves you laying on the sofa half asleep? My last job job was a few blocks from a methadone clinic. Every morning it was like a zombie march to that place. Rain, snow, heat, it didn't matter. Those junkies were out there waiting for their fix. It was the only thing you could count on them for.

Agreed. I can understand the superficial appeal of 'uppers' or cocaine, but not drugs that leave you in a perpetual semi-comatose state.

Think about it logically, and/or in terms of alpha/beta:

Natural alphas just want to party and fuck sluts. There's no way that natural alpha will go opposite of his +nature and subserve himself with downers. Instead, uppers will turbo boost their already gregarious/positive/high-T nature, and will make them feel thrice as powerful. Hence their love for uppers like cocaine.

Natural betas, on the other hand, are low energy, but also have inquisitive minds that they love to engage. They are also likely to be depressed and/or susceptible to physical and/or mental pain. Opiates make them docile, pain free, and yet perceptive at the same time. Hence their love for downers like heroin.

If politicians were drug addicts,

Trump would be on cocaine, and Jeb on heroin.

You can bank on it.

If I don't see PRNDL, I won't drive it.

I have mostly owned manuals in my life but I have a beater truck with an auto, so I am just used to always using the parking brake. Might just be paranoid about my parking pawl snapping off on auto trannys, but I always set the parking brake first and let off the foot brake before I'll slide it back into park so there's no chance it's resting on the pawl.

Fuck, I actually liked the guy. 27 is an eerie number.

Watch out there chaps. Always put your car in gear if you have a manual, it's actually safer than a handbrake as the compression of the engine will hold the car. Some cars have tricky handbrake mechanisms that can let go when the rear brakes cool down from high temp. If the car faces an incline leave it in reverse, if it faces a decline then first.

Also be careful when you work on your car, always use jack stands or other solid support and try to rock your car to check if it's stable. Also remember to disconnect the bloody battery!

As ridiculous as his story may sound I've actually done something sort of similar with a PRNDL car. I was leaving work and there is a gate and when I went to grab my badge I dropped it between my seats in a spot where I would actually have to get out of my car to get it underneath. The problem was I dropped it and couldn't reach it initially so I lost my temper and slammed my gear into what I thought was P. I then got out and started to reach for my badge and then felt my car get bumped hard. I looked up and thought the woman behind me bumped me because I was taking too long and I actually yelled "why the hell did you hit me?" to her. She looked at me like I was nuts and said I hit her.

Turns out when I slammed it into P it actually went in N and slowly rolled back. I actually didn't even feel the car go back which is crazy. Its just a lesson not to loose your cool for stupid shit. I think the reason I lost my temper so bad is because I've dropped my badge a couple times over the years when I was at this gate so I already had it in the back of my head that I was prone to dropping it but this time I actually dropped it in a spot where I couldn't reach it and I lost my mind basically for a brief moment when I realized I would have to get out of my car and dig underneath my seat while there was cars in back of me.

For all I know Anton was in similar rush or in a bad place temporary mentally and didn't notice what was going on. I can understand that because Im a flawless driver record wise since I was a teen and the only accident in my life was that stupid moment when I dropped my badge. Everyone probably has done a head-scratching stupid thing in their life but you usually don't die for it.

I think there's no other way than develop an instinct for it because you can't rationally control these kind of actions every time. Some will develop it, some won't.

This is a tragic loss. I saw him in a few films, and this guy was one of those actors who made an impression on me every time:

Alpha Dog
Rudderless
Green Room

I just saw the last one today -- good slasher flick.

Yelchin was one of those actors who had it going on. Watching him, you could just tell he was going to be a star someday.

Unless he gets crushed by his own car.

Sucks.

He was good in it. Kind of reminded me of a young Ewan Mcgregor in looks and also acting. Too bad really.

Some people just have the world at their fingertips only to have it plucked away at the last minute. Cruel fate in some ways but he's left a mark at least.

The number of high-profile celebrities to die unexpectedly in 2016 has been astounding. It seems to be part of a larger trend, seemingly kicked off (no pun intended) by Heath Ledger's death in 2008. They've really been dropping like flies since then.

This could in part be attributed the the sheer amount of entertainment material there is out there in the world now.

Go back far enough and there used to a few free to air television channels and a smattering of movie releases each year.

Now it seems like content is being released so quickly that it would take a team of a thousand people working 12 hour shifts seven days a week just to keep up with it all, and that adds up to a lot of so called celebrities.

I agree that as the entertainment industry continues to grow, it will need more artists to support it. Since these individuals are in the public eye, it's big news when they die. In death, just as in life, the spotlight shines brighter on these folks than everyday people. I'm not trying to don a tin-foil hat here and suggest all these deaths are the work of some elaborate conspiracy or anything like that. All I'm saying, and I'm willing to admit it could be my own confirmation bias at work here, is that a lot of celebrities have died unexpectedly and often in shocking ways during the past eight years, but especially in 2016.

Michael Jackson (June 25, 2009, age 50)

Robin Williams (August 11, 2014, age 63)
David Bowie (January 10, 2016, age 69)
Alan Rickman (January 14, 2016, age 69)
Prince (April 21, 2016, age 57)

The list goes on...
