Had a stroke myself several years ago, which changed my whole outlook on life. When that man in the black Cadillac drives by, you suddenly discover a whole new set of priorities.

Welcome back! I can relate to the situation of facing chronic stress in your mid 50's, so your original post about your heart attack really hit home with me. It's very encouraging to hear that you came through and are getting things together again.

This is a little sobering, as that sentence describes me as well (no heart attack.. yet)

Sobering words. Thanks for sharing your story, missed this one the first time around. Having worked at a super stressful job with good pay before, I got fired for arguing with my boss. It was the best thing to ever happen to me. No job is worth losing your peace of mind. Find another workplace or hire yourself and become an entrepreneur.

Welcome back, and this puts your situation into a bit more perspective. I'm guessing by the age of this post and your description that you are about sixty years old?

One thing that stood out -

Careers are longer than five years - what'd you used to to before that horrendous job came along?

When you get older, the destruction of your soul WILL destroy your body too. They are linked, and anybody who doesn't know this just hasn't gotten fucked by it yet. You'll get cancer, heart problems, ulcers, or a million other problems. They are all primarily rooted in anger and your inability as a man to control your own destiny. Seen it happen to MANY of my buddies.

I know stress is a killer - seen it kill a family member and that documentary posted earlier is relevant to me. But I stop short at the "inability as a man to control your own destiny" bit. You always have some control. What to drink (if at all), what to smoke (ditto), what to eat, what to wear and where to live. You choose who to marry and procreate with even if your choices are limited, and who to shake hands with or punch in the face. You can choose divorce, which might suck, but a marriage that kills you sucks even more. We always have SOME choices in or own destiny - prison is full of guys who made shitty choices.

You mentioned your buddies - are they cynical drinking buddies? Because if so, you're the sum total of the people with whom you spend your time. Hope they didn't bring you down int a cycle of stress and disrepair.

Hope things are looking up - and that this forum is more beneficial than stressful.

That's why I only work in the construction business. Real construction to, not easy shit like electrical or painting where women can weasel their way into. Sure it's hard on my back but it pays good and no office dykes or betas in suits.

MrLemon is a gem. Thank you!

I stored his advice in the back of my head. I live my life proactively and even though things aren't too good right now I realize it can get even worse. No way I will be living in condition now as an older man.

That's why you sock away as much money as you can so that way you won't have to depend on a job. There's going to be a day when you don't want to show up at work anymore.

So I've been out of commission for a few week cause I had a heart attack. I'm in my late 50s and got fucked, well that's what happens to many men.

I'm not writing this post for sympathy, no really, don't say anything because it's actually irritating to get the sympathy bullshit. I'm a man and I take my lumps and fight back.

But I want to warn you guys: as you get older, the more shit you eat (especially from asshole backstabbing lying deceitful incompetent lesbian cunt bosses, see my prior posts on that topic) the more that eating shit eats away at your body.

Here's the thing: I work out, a lot, religiously. I eat great. But I still got fucked, because I've been in a crappy career for the past 5 years that has eaten away at my soul.

Being and alpha man who is trapped in a beta life will kill you dead. Don't work for women managers. Don't sacrifice your pride for money, uniess you are building something so great you are willing to die for it.

Remember this post.

I missed this legendary post at the time that it was made because I was trapped in a loveless marriage at the time. So yeah talk about a fitting post and a message that resonates with me. I'll never forget this one. Thank you MrLemon.

I've had doctors tell me that I was going to keel over any day now. I spent half this year expecting to die before my next birthday. Then I finally got in to see my cardiologist and he told me "we need to keep an eye on your bicuspid valve, come back in a year".

This has been a really fucked up year. I despise doctors.

This is much easier said than done. So many unforseen things can happen over the course of your life which can eat away at what ever savings you have. You want stress, then save a bunch of money over the years and have it go poof! when something happens like a lawsuit, an IRS audit, a stock market crash etc. In 2008, so many people lost a fuck load of money in the crash and guys who were about to retire had to put it off for another 10 years. This happened to a guy I know, an orthodontist, was getting ready to sell his office and retire and then lost a bunch of his money in 2008. He had to go back to work and then 3 years later had a heart attack. Guy is still working his ass off today.

While there are no guarantees about anything in life, the biggest thing you have to preserve is not so much your wealth (although that is of course very beneficial) but your health. If you're healthy and you have some marketable skills, you can continue to work as you get older. This way, even if you have financial setbacks you can continue on. If you have a decent career that you enjoy and can do on a part time basis as you get older, that along with having some savings will keep you going. The longer you can go without having to tap into your savings the better. It goes without saying that managing your stress is critical but that doesn't mean being afraid of tough situations because most often you can't avoid things from happening but having the mind and spirit to roll with things as they happen. This is where I think most people struggle.

You are smart to despise doctors. Fight like hell to take care of yourself. Don't give up. Ever. Doctors don't know shit (the good ones will admit this with humility). Nobody really knows shit. Your body is amazing and can heal almost anything given the right guidance.

Actually I don't despise doctors. They are getting FUCKED by the government and they are literally blocked from doing a good job. They aren't allowed to think at all.

What saved my life, literally, was my reading on the internet. I had an iPad taped over my bed so I could surf. I read every thing, from every country. Months and months of that. I finally found the right treatment. Took me months to figure it out. Luckily my doctor finally decided to stop arguing with me and just did what I told him I needed done.

Again, as an older man, you MUST NOT have a woman doctor, because they will never listen to you, they'll just ignore you and then kill you with their endless incompetence. I finally found a young Chinese doctor (no whites available at all) who was a decent smart guy, and most important, as a Chinese male he's trained from birth to respect his elders. So when I told him what I needed...he fucking did it. He was spot on the mark with his responses.

Anyway I won't rant more. Good luck man.

Glad you're pulling through, Lemon. I remember reading your original post and it stuck with me.

This is true from my experience. I broke my arm a few years ago and had a female ortho for my followup appointments. This is at a very good hospital by the way.

After a month I started lifting light weights with my broken arm. I go in for a check up and she says, "you shouldn't be doing that, the xray still shows the arm hasn't healed at all."

Me, "It already feels solid, the pain is going away and I read in med journals that it's better to start using a broken limb sooner to promote healing"

Her, "Stop lifting weights or you're going to need another surgery to put your arm back together. Just look at this Xray"

Me, "You can't see anything from that Xray angle. What do the other angles show?"

Her: [looks at other xrays which clearly show healing]. "Oh, looks like your arm is healing" [fills out some paperwork and quickly leaves the room]

I had a manager who at the time was promoted to a higher level position and was just in his early 40s.

He exercises too. Then he was known to work far longer hours. We didn't have any cunt bosses running the place either.

The day before he died we didn't notice anything unusual.
On the very day he died his wife called into work to deliver the bad news to our workplace.

Heart attacks are those things that strikes quickly and requires precise timing with medical help to even survive one.

This all begs the question. Should we live to work or work to live?

I think most of us on this forum know the answer to that.

Supposedly if you chew an aspirin within a few minutes of thinking you are having one, that can buy you some time. It's cheap enough to keep a bottle or two around, just in case.

Aspirin helps by inhibiting platelets. Only a tiny amount is needed to inhibit all the platelets in the bloodstream; in fact, small amounts are better than high doses. But since the clot grows minute by minute, time is of the essence.

Great post. Really strong and gives perspective - Health is the most important thing - and no matter what you have to fight for yourself.
Don't just lay down and wait for problems to sort themselves on its own. Your life - your problems - your choices - be a master of your life - do not follow others or situation that just happened.

Wish that my bro would understand this.
