That being said, whilst he's avoiding the accusation by making a claim to intellectual superiority - a classic midwit tell - I don't entirely disagree with him about the overuse of the word itself.

I mentioned in a previous thread how I thought it was turning into the 'literally' of the alt-right. 'Cuckservative' was a vicious shot to fire because of the poison on the tip of the arrow. I'd place it as the first truly effective attempt by the right to Pathologise behaviour, as Leftists have been doing for decades. Yeah I too was taken aback by Maddox's response. It wasn't even a long video either, only 3 minutes long which goes to show how little substance he could present for his point of view. I've read Maddox since I was a teenager in the early 2000's and was disappointed to see that video.

Of course Maddox has been pissing off his fans since the very beginning. It was only a matter of time before he said something that either offended me or I disagreed with. NBD

I've been a longtime fan of his and I know he pisses off large swathes of people to be a counterculture contrarian (basically so he has something to bitch about), but this is very uncharacteristic.

This thread is interesting. Instead of complaining about Maddox's opinions, we should be trying to learn as much as possible from him. This guy built a niche from nothing, runs his own business, and has the opinion to be 100% location independent at any time.

Say what you want to about what he may have written that touched a nerve, he's still the real deal.

We men are always going to disagree about much of what we believe, but I think we can all agree that having the freedom to do and say as you please is desirable and Maddox is far ahead of many of us when it comes to achieving personal freedom.

Have any of you considered that he might write things (that he doesn't even agree with) just to piss people off? Clearly, doing so is a viable business strategy.

I also can't recall him ever apologizing for anything that he's written, which is about as alpha as it gets.

Not everyone simply aligns themselves with one political ideology which they then become incapable of criticizing. To do so is the opposite of thinking for yourself.

Maddox is someone who, for better or for worse, makes up his own mind about all issues. He's very liberal on some matters and conservative on others. In his writing, sometimes he simply refuses to pick a side.

He has also criticized those who blindly support their political party of membership.

Unfortunately, it has been my experience that few people think for themselves. They'd prefer to "join a team."

I personally struggle to comprehend those who do this. I even know a lot of smart people who do so. I'm very much taken aback by knee-jerk "you're either for use or against us" responses to disagreement.

The genuinely thoughtful people I know don't have a worldview that falls neatly into any category.

Completely agree. I understand the reasoning - most people want to be accepted as part of some group or another. Agreeing with a group's ideology only in part tends to get you on their bad side for lacking 100% ideological purity.

The first example that comes to mind is how Vox Day slings vitriol at Matt Walsh because the latter dislikes Donald Trump, even though they're probably in agreement about 95% of everything else.

It strikes me as a pretty ridiculous way of stirring up manufactured conflict, especially when there are much bigger opponents (SJWs, etc.) to fight.

That being said, I'm not exactly rushing to defend Maddox since I haven't paid much attention to him in years.

Maddox has gone down the drain and there is no recovery. However, I believe that the explanation for that is a bit different than the ones proposed here.

While of course it's correct that he was always a whiny leftist at heart, the major factor here is a desperate last grasp for money and attention. Like so many mediocre magazines, videogame companies, TV shows and writers, Maddox has slowly ran out of good material and creative spirit. He now finds himself in a terrible bind, being a professional comedian yet cornered by the terrible fact that his creativity is exhausted and his jokes don't cause laughter and admiration as they have had a long time before?

What is a man to do when he has no more gas for being a quality comedian, yet he has come far enough that his income and livelihood depend on it? Why, start catering to SJWs of course! Same like Playboy decided to stop publishing nudes and start writing more about social justice in a desperate attempt to regain its revenues and relevancy, or how comic book writers started introducing transgender characters in hopes that it would raise sales, so did Maddox also get old and tired, eventually deciding to pander to the only remaining demographic that his fading skills could possibly attract: SJWs.

It is a very sad turn of events, but by no means unexpected. Expect many former "troll" or "anti-establishment" mini-celebs to follow this path as their lack of talent and motivation starts surfacing - or as they, in other words, start hitting the wall.

Such a shame, because it's a great term when used correctly. I also started following him back in 2002 or so. From there, Tucker Max Board, Heartiste, Roosh, Captain Capitalism, Matt Forney, and so forth. But looking back at all of his stuff - in light of this recent video - has my worrying about possible Gamma tells.

In 2002 he was a mid-level manage at a telemarketing firm, in Salt Lake City - a city run by Mormons (often hypocritical Mormons), while he was an agnostic. Under-employed, and subject to various blue laws. He found a niche bitching about idiots on the left, and hypocritical idiots on the right (aka Cuckservatives - selling out Jesus for votes). His analysis was pretty spot-on in most cases, even his argument about illegal immigration was mostly about the stupidity of most people who oppose it (to that extent I can agree with him, given the time and place that he wrote it).

But there are two reasons for being anti-establishment. The first is that you're truly a free-thinker. You start off trusting what you're taught, and out of curiosity you begin to look into it more deeply. From that you get the manosphere, neomasculinity, opposition to globalism, you become a huge advocate of free markets before realizing the value of protectionism (while still rejecting leftist, managed economy tactics), et cetera. You become a rebel with a cause.

The other reason for being anti-establishment is that you feel rejected by the status quo. You're angry that you aren't being given the respect you're rightfully due (in your mind), and so you attack anybody whom you view as an enemy, for the sake of appearing more intelligent than them. You're a rebel without a cause.

Many of these loose cannons will wind up being correct, for extended periods of time. The "Skeptic Community" is full of these sorts of losers (especially in the lower ranks), and they nonetheless manage to do good work - exposing pseudo-science and woo. But they need to be read with a grain of salt, since their primary goal is to appear more intelligent than other people, they're perfectly willing to lie for the sake of promoting Science! - even when scientists screw up.

I'm beginning to suspect that Maddox might be one of the latter. When he goes against legitimate idiots, he's hilarious and correct; but because his primary target isn't [people who are pretentious and wrong] but rather [people who are significant and hold a belief] he winds up attacking people who are a lot smarter than him, and making an ass of himself in the process.

What he should be doing: evolving his comedy into a POSITIVE message. Take George Carlin for instance: when he was younger, his comedy was snarky, anti-establishment nonsense (Look at me! I'm going to say swear words on TV!). By the end of his career, he'd evolved it into a positive agenda, a statement about the people who run the world.

There's plenty to disagree with Carlin on - I think most of us here are largely in disagreement with his actual agenda - but were he alive today, I'd love a chance to sit down with him. He seems like the sort of guy who would listen to us as we tell him how the world has changed since his death, and modulate his message to include that new data. Carlin gracefully accepted his role as becoming part of the new establishment - while Maddox still insists on being outside of it all.

I think there's more than meets the eye with Maddox. Despite having quit his day job years ago, he still rarely posts on his website. He's clearly very busy and he's finding a way to pay the bills.

I doubt he's making a fortune off of sticker and t-shirt sales, although his books may contribute a chunk. While the videos he occasionally releases require some effort, they aren't enough of them to suggest that he's doing that full time and the articles he publishes can't be keeping him busy, so it's most likely that the website is a side hobby more than anything else. My suspicion is that he probably works as a consultant on various marketing or production projects that take up most of his time and pay well. Keep in mind, he's the guy who went to the top of Amazon's best seller list with a book that insults most segments of society, so he clearly has marketing knowledge and skills that make him very valuable to a lot of people.

He simply doesn't spend enough time producing and releasing his own content to suggest that it's an accurate depiction of who he is. He's fucking with us.

HCE, don't you think it's a bit extreme to say he's pandering to SJW's? I didn't get that impression from the video. Yes, he's far past his prime and he is long since out of material, but I think it's hyperbolic to say he's going to go full SJW.

Maddox was great in the early days when trolling of the tucker max variety was the gold standard. Once the video format became mainstream it spelled the end for guys like maddox. He also was only "anti establishment" when it was cool to hate republicans (which it still is, i guess....but it's not in vogue the way it was when bush was in office).

The problem with all these internet assholes is that they never know where to draw the line; they can never accept the fact that they do not know everything. Maddox is a perfect example. He made his name by being a ridiculous piss taking troll, not for his serious political opinions. Refer to any other "internet icon" for an example of this.
