Uncommon Knowledge: Charles Murray & Coming Apart

For those of you who know, or do not know about it, the Hoover Institution (the bizarre bastion of classical liberal thought started by President Hoover on the now-wacked-out Stanford campus) has a long-time video series called Uncommon Knowledge that interviews many people of great intellectual depth and wisdom. Its a rich series.

Here, Peter Robinson has a conversation with Charles Murray, author of "Coming Apart: The State of White America 1960-2010". It is a great read, you can see a godo review from RvF here: thread-53182.html

Anyways, the premise of his book is spot-on, and explains the really downward-sloping trend we've been on since the 60s. I like JFK, he did a lot of great things, and Murray equates his death and Johnson's ascension with the start of this period of 'coming apart'. It explains so much of what is going on today, why our society has so many negative elements. Especially for a forum like ours which, despite is array of forum genres, is based on a pursuit of women, Murray's theory and explanation really make sense as to why the women of today are like they are. Granted he doesn't follow that train of thought, but the idea and trend of his thesis explains it flawlessly.

I think while we many may blanket all American women as part of a bad pool with only a few gems, I think that's an exaggeration, but the two directions that Murray speaks of white America going in, and the nature of this split, really explain why our fathers, grandfathers, etc. found so many loyal, strong, feminine, quality women and why so many today are so deficient.

If you have the 45min to listen to this fascinating conversation, over web surfing, exercising, whatever, you should.

Interesting introduction. Going to give this a read

A man who procrastinates in his choosing will inevitably have his choice made for him by circumstance.

A true friend is the most precious of all possessions and the one we take the least thought about acquiring.
