i downloaded rosseta stone on torrents search sites.

problem is without keys ect it can be tricky to get to function perfectly.

I swear by Pirate bay. Make sure to check the uploader's reputation beforehand, this will cut down on virus/keylogger headaches. Easy to download and apply a key generator to.

I finished Rosetta Stone for Portuguese after trying both it and Pimsleur and I´m pretty happy with my ability to have conversations here in Brazil. What I liked about Rosetta Stone is how it associates words directly with pictures, which being a very visual learner makes it easier for me to remember the vocabulary words. Granted, I already spoke Spanish before learning Portuguese so learning the grammar, which is arguably Rosetta Stone´s weakest point, wasn´t an issue for me. My main problem with Pimsleur was that they use direct translation from English and auditory as opposed to visual recall, which made it a lot harder for me to remember things (I usually translate into Portuguese from Spanish rather than English). I can see how Pimsleur would have advantages for people who don´t speak fluent Spanish or are better auditory than visual learners, though.

You might want to check the public libary for Pimsleur. I just looked and my local one has them.

Sucessfully downloaded both Pimsleur and Rosetta French Courses. Lets see what works best for me.

You should also look into pod.com sites like russianpod.com, etc. I'm using a pod site and it's much more comprehensive than a resource like Pimsleur, Rosetta Stone or any intro language resource.

Don't bother. Rosetta Stone sucks. I bought it 2 years ago, and barely learnt anything, so I sent it back and got a full refund. I then bought Spanish work books from amazon, and study from them for about 30 mins or so a day. I'm not perfect at speaking Spanish, but I can hold a conversation in Spanish now. Speaking to people from the countries that speak the language you want to learn helps as well. I speak to people from Argentina, Spain, Mexico etc in Spanish.

Moma, workbooks are almost useless if your goal is to speak conversationally. If you're just starting, you'd be better served buying a phrasebook for tourists (the little kind that fits in your pocket) and going from there. With a phrasebook you get fully formed sentences from the get-go. With a workbook, you can finish the whole thing without being able to construct a decent sentence.

However

The best practice, bar none, is simply talking with native speakers.

If you were going to spend time studying out of a book, you might as well just go to the Spanish part of town with your phrasebook and practice chatting with whoever. There are also langauge exchange websites like http://www.livemocha.com, but it's always better to just do it in person.

If you don't have the confidence to just start a chat, look in your phrasebook and memorize a few phrases to begin with. Think about how a normal conversation would go. You'll probably have to explain why you're speaking spanish. You'll probably want to know where someone is from, and tell them where you're from etc.
