Anyone tried making protein bars?

I'm going to try hemp (high protein, high fibre, v little carbs) flour, unflavoured +unsweetened whey protein, with a little milk.
Probably put mapleen syrup or chocolate or a tiny bit of peanut butter to flavour/sweeten it.

I suppose oat and raisins or nuts could be added too.

Shakes do the job, but I just prefer to eat rather than drink something.
Plus the pre-made bars tend to be more carbs and stuff, with less protein.

The tricky part seems to be getting the right consistency, avoiding excess stickiness .. and ofcourse a genuinely enjoyable taste.
TBH I haven't had much success in building a "superbar" in the past. Although I once managed a tasty chocolate mousse type thing, even if loads stuck to the dish.

EDIT: interesting thread on commercial protein bars.

Here's the link.

The bigger problem is that by the time you buy all the shit to make it, it's not much cheaper than buying a bar, and not worth the time.

Protein shakes can be expensive, full of chemicals and sugar, taste like shit, and some people reported getting nasty acne, necessitating probiotics as a counter-measure.

Here are two natural protein drinks, one from Iceland--skyr, just found out about it, and Russian kefir. Both are natural probiotics and have a lot of protein and necessary carbs in them, making them perfect post-workout drinks.

Where to buy? Nowadays it's in every whole foods-like store, though expensive. If you're in a big city, there are always Russian/Slavic delis around that will have kefir. I've no idea where to get skyr. I just today noticed it at the commissary on the Army base I'm on.

Anyway, check out the stats:

I am afraid that women appreciate cruelty, downright cruelty, more than anything else. They have wonderfully primitive instincts. We have emancipated them, but they remain slaves looking for their masters all the same. They love being dominated.

To me, making bars is about replacing whey shakes with something tasty and set for your own needs etc.
Commercial bars tend to be a little too rich and carb laden.
The Maximuscle bars are really good. But they advise a maximum of two a day - which means just 46g protein.

Skyr and Kefir I think are really good alts to whey protein (in reasonable amounts anyway).
My guess is that we'll see more and more protein enriched meals and snacks in the future.
Because lots of people drink whey protein but aren't real fans of it.

IMO bottled protein shakes and derivatives tend too be way overpriced. I usually prepare them myself at home or take a shaker with oatmeal and protein powder so i can mix it up with water whenever i need to.

If you get tired of the same stuff a good idea is to use yogurt to sweeten it up.
