Date Lab: When to Eject?

The recent Washington Post Date Lab is especially cringeworthy. The guy is a bit nerdy, socially "tone deaf", and perhaps trying too hard.

But the girl was disinterested from the beginning:

I worked all day ... and then ... spaced out on the subway and went past my transfer spot, so I was a bit stressed. ... I didn’t find him super attractive ... and I didn’t get that vibe.

At least he knew it:

She’s extremely beautiful — she’s a dead ringer for Rebecca de Mornay from “Risky Business.” She’s just not my type. She’s very poised, very professional. I would have preferred someone that was maybe more expressive.

Part of success is reading feedback and moving on to fertile fields. Should he have just left after appetizers, or wolfed down dinner and bolted?

This dude is delusional. She is not extemely beautiful. It is just his standards are low from living in DC.

Any chick in DC who is not fat thinks of herself as "beautiful." LOL!

This dude should have asked to go to the bathroom, bolted out the door, and left this cunty bitch with the check.

Date Lab: When to Eject?

I worked all day [at my] architectural practice, [then had] a meeting [at] a dusty construction site and then went to dinner. I was a few minutes late. I actually spaced out on the subway and went past my transfer spot, so I was a bit stressed. He was there [already] and at the table.

Translation: I am a modern, empowered woman. I have a high powered job. I can work just as hard as any man, even if it means getting dirty. Sometimes it stresses me out. Deal with it. That's the price of a quality woman like me.

Quote:Quote:

He was there [already] and at the table.
Translation: Sap. [Notice, no "I felt bad when I got there, because he had already been waiting."]

Quote:Quote:

I think he’s just used to speaking his mind and not tempering his views.

Translation: I'm repressed, and can't handle the slightest display of personality 'til after 9 months of dating.

Quote:Quote:

She’s very poised, very professional. I would have preferred someone that was maybe more expressive.

Translation: She's stuck up, repressed, and humorless.

Quote:Quote:

Man: Like for example, she didn’t tell one joke the entire night.

Woman: The whole thing could have been a little more lighthearted. I think he was looking at it more as an opportunity to meet someone who [he] might connect with very seriously, [but] I like to banter. Whatever happened to banter? Why is banter so hard to find? I was not getting a lot of banter.

On one level, his sense of humor sucked, and wasn't well calibrated to her sensibilities. On the other, this sounds like a lot of girls - the conversation goes poorly because she is a sucky conversationalist. And then she thinks you are the weak link. That she sucks at it never enters her mind.

The guy is a little nerdy and socially inept - eg taking out his phone to actually speak correctly on a matter of public policy. Actually, I just whipped out a phone on a recent date, but I had fun with it - I made her a cash money bet about a trivial dispute that arose, money on the table and all.

Mainstream game says: if you don't get her, it's your fault. Reality is, some girls just suck, and aren't worth the time. You have to be self-aware and criticize yourself, but girls like these are best ignored.

Talking politics...that's guaranteed to go down horribly.

This seems like typical urban yuppie date stuff. Neither one of them has any idea about how to be charming or sexy. Just a dry recitation of facts. Although, I gather if he would have flirted, even a little bit, she would have been uncomfortable. Better to stick to things like jobs and union organizing. At least no one gets embarrassed, and heaven forbid that.

If this is being watched by a writer for the biggest newspaper in the city, better to just stick it out. Otherwise, better to avoid going out to eat when you are first knowing someone, unless it's like a slice of pizza or something.

I would give her a 4 out of 10.

Hard to believe that both of them are only a few years older than me. They seem... old.

Article says she's 36, but she looks 46.

I know we always give the women a hard time, but look at this:

Bradley: I was interested in her as a person, but like I said, after that 150 milliseconds, it takes six or seven significant steps to turn that first impression. So I was open-minded; I was like, maybe something will change my mind here, but that just never occurred. I [said]: “I really enjoyed your company, and I’d like to see you again,” and she said, “We’ll see how it goes.” But we didn’t have each other’s phone numbers, there’s no way to get in touch again. So it was clearly a throwaway line.

Interested in her as a person? WTF does that even mean? So he claims he wasn't attracted to her but still wanted to see her again? I think he just wrote that as an ego-saving measure.

Another interesting (well, we know this already) tidbit:

Elizabeth: It was a little awkward. You never feel nice when someone asks you for your contact information and you say you’d rather not. I didn’t want to hurt his feelings, but I wasn’t really interested in staying in touch. I would say at best, [the date] was a 2. It just wasn’t a real charming date.

That's why women give you a number but then flake out later; they don't want to feel bad by not giving you the number.

Date Lab: When to Eject?

This is the most depressing of the Date Labs posted so far. While the others were purely infuriating and annoying, something about this one produces a whole different set of emotions.

The best part:

These date lab articles are great in their own way...sort of like a coroner doing an autopsy for the idea of romance in Washington D.C.

Same here. When I saw the picture I'd say she is in late forties.
Here in US I've seen quite a lot of 50yo looking younger than her.

And that chick would think you were too old were you a lively, passionate 44 year old.

Get out, just get out. EE. Columbia. Anywhere but here.

Because if you wait until you're over 50 like I am ( I waited so I'd have an independent income, don't like "mini-retirements")
you'll have to serve up some game even there. To get 24 year olds.

Correct me if I'm wrong but that Date Lab thing picks up the check for these folks no?

Otherwise what's the incentive for doing it aside from MAYBE meeting someone you like?

It's a measley $75, which is nothing for middle-aged professionals and homeowners in this expensive city.

Some of them hope they will find a good match. This guy asked for feedback from readers in the comments. The major drawback is the potentially embarrassing reader scrutiny. Then again, the publicity might encourage good people to contact you through Date Lab.

$75 is pretty damn decent for a meal for two in the city. Where do YOU eat?

If I weren't worried about my face and name (and dignity) being attached to one of those articles I'd actually sign up and probably make headlines. Oh well.

Good point, the dude must have lived the last 30+ years under a rock if he thinks she looks like Rebecca De Mornay!?
Here's the actress: [Image: Rebecca%20DeMornay.jpg]

I see no resemblance except for the hair color. Also, is it just me or DC women tend to age very quickly. 30 year olds here look like 38 years in Europe.
