Guadalajara vs Puerto Vallarta

Guadalajara vs Puerto Vallarta

I'll be flying to Guadalajara after Christmas for about 6 days. From what I've read, Guadalajara city should keep me fairly busy with local talent and general sight seeing. I've come across good things about Puerto Vallarta too but I haven't been able to decide if it's worth taking a few days away from GDL and making a 5 hours one way bus trip to PV. Flights are shorter but kinda expensive for the dates I would want.

I also couldn't find much about NYE celebrations in both cities. Is one place better than the other or they are almost the same in terms of party options, crowd and cost?

I'm more inclined to just stay put in GDL and maximize my stay there. Unless someone here can convince me otherwise.

I don't know where all these newbie Latin American threads have been coming from lately, but you will get tapatias much easier in Puerto Vallarta than you will in Guadalajara. Puerto Vallarta will probably be better for New Year's. I say spend a few days in both places and maybe even take a trip to Chapala.

Thanks for the tips. Looks like there are overnight buses between GDL and PV that arrive at destination early morning. Will give that a go after few days in GDL.

Its a bit of an apple to oranges comparison in the sense that one is a large, modern industrialized city and the other is a small beach resort town full of gringos and resorts. I did a two week trip down there, spent 11 days in GDL and 2 in PV just to go fishing, it was in September so wasn't peak season. I'd stay longer in GDL, find a chick there and then take her to PV. I did that exact thing a few weeks ago in the Yucatan, met a girl in Merida then took her to Play Del Carmen and banged her guts out for a week there.

Just so you guys know, Scotian met JJRoberts/Lumiere during the Guadalajara trip he's talking about and the two really hit it off.

The locals in PV seemed to be really ugly and mostly indigenous looking. So unless you want to game other tourists, mostly Americans and Canadians I'd avoid it.

Definitely bring a girl to PV. There are a lot of tourist girls, but most are with their families even if you see a group of 6 or so they are often staying with family even then.

Do stay in the old town. Forget about Nueva, its all inclusive territory. Plus, all the gringas will come to town to party at least once anyways, so swoop them then.

But yeah, chicks from GDL or Mazatlan are much better looking.

And for the record, I am a big fan of PV. The area is beautiful in places like yelapa punta mita and sayulita especially. The old town is romantic and the nights just get better and better after a nice walk, some drinks and some dancing.

Thanks for all the replies.

I ended up staying in GDL the whole time. I really liked the city. There is tons of history and interesting places in centro and cool places to hangout in chapultepec. There were huge crowds in these places due to end of the year holidays. That helped with local talent hunting [Image: wink.gif] Will have to make another trip for PV.

btw, Tlaquepaque is a great little town(30 mins drive from GDL) to take a girl to for a dinner/day trip.
