Why men have a better sense of direction

Study explains why men tend to have a better sense of direction than women

This study has some juicy information, and is leading in a promising direction for future research.

Quote:Quote:

It’s been well established that men perform better than women when it comes to specific spatial tasks. But how much of that is linked to sex hormones versus cultural conditioning and other factors?

Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) decided to explore this idea by administering testosterone to women and testing how they performed in wayfinding tasks in a virtual environment

tl;dr:

Men use more efficient and flexible strategies and are, in general, better at spatial tasks. Women have a tendency to remember a particular path and base their movements upon that, where men will pick a direction and start moving.

Testosterone aided women's ability to carry out a spatial task, but not enough to actually improve their results

The secret hidden narrative in this article:
Men need male role models in their lives to learn from. [trigger]We simply don't function in the same ways as females[/trigger]

Why men have a better sense of direction

One of the reasons is that men and women have different eyes, women have closer set eyes which gives a greater peripheral sight while men have wider set eyes which gives better depth perception and better ability to focus on distant objects.

This means men are better at seeing things that are far away, which is pretty useful for navigating, but it also means we run around shouting 'where did I put that thing' while your girlfriend or mom always seem to be able to find lost stuff quickly in the house.

Just one of the many small differences, men evolved eyes to spot prey, women evolved to keep track of where their kids were running around.

A cross-sectional, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study was performed in 42 healthy young women who either received one dose of 0.5 mg sublingual testosterone or placebo.

They then learned a virtual environment and performed navigation tasks during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Subsequently, their knowledge of the virtual environment, self-reported navigation strategy, and mental rotation abilities were measured.

The testosterone group had improved representations of the directions within the environment and performed significantly better on the mental rotation task compared to the placebo group

The lesson is simple, gents. Give her a sublingual testosterone supplement before you kick her out so she can find her way home.

Is this your opinion or do you have some studies to back it up? I'm wondering because it helps to have the research on hand when women and liberals speak out of turn.

I can't find the actual studies quickly, but do some Googling and you'll find them, but they're behind scientific words which you have to know to filter out all the pop culture references.

Interesting article. On the cardinal directions point (NSEW), why is it that women always seem to have their car gps set so that "UP" on the screen is just whatever direction the car happens to be going in at that moment? "Map" mode, where UP is always North on the screen is so much more useful. But it does require that you have a basic understanding of what a map is, and how to use it.

You answered your own question. I never take directions from a woman for this reason. We speak a different language when it comes to directions...I always suspected but now I know why

BTW...One of my pet peeves is when someone coming from the North down in my direction says "I'm coming up to..." or vice versa from the South saying "I'm coming down to..." It's almost always women or more effeminate dudes that do this

This is one of the few things I constantly correct in a conversation. It annoys the hell out of me. No one in the contiguous US is heading up to Miami or heading down to Canada (there are a few exceptions but you get my point).

Think outside the box once in a while gentlemen.

A man who procrastinates in his choosing will inevitably have his choice made for him by circumstance.

A true friend is the most precious of all possessions and the one we take the least thought about acquiring.

Girls can find anything in my room in seconds. Wallet, phone, condoms, other girl's hairclip, my tie. It's ridiculous. I can't see what they can see even when it is right in front of my eyes.

Yet when it comes to direction, girls don't seem to have any kind of interior compass. Give me a 10 second glimpse at a map and the direction North and I can find my way around a city for hours. Only girls can walk up a road, walk back down a parallel neighbouring road, and think they are still going in the same direction.

My favourite.
Tell a chick to head north.

"Which way is north?"

All the while, a clearly identifiable sun is rising in the east & setting in the west...

^^ After a while I forgot even what the issue was. They got lost so many times I really stopped understanding if it was real or not.

I would assume a map was given to them....

It would of clearly given you paths to choose;

Gamble on the short cut through the ruff

Take the more sure, but longer coastline.

Simple. Two options. You pick one. Go with it.

If the first plan to take the short route fails, you re-group and take the coast line, though longer, is less confusing and would of only taken a day to walk. The group did that towards the end but I had to shake my head it took that long (3 days?) and somebody almost dying to get to that point.

I notice this with Google directions too. If you use the more finite walking directions that lead you about its is confusing and clunky as it does that 'up direction' method also. I would rather just zoom out and see the directions from farther out with NSEW.

Women are programmed to have a mental map of their general surroundings. Many women will stubbornly walk the same route each day even if it is longer in length, while a man will never be afraid to switch things up if he thinks it can get him where he needs to be quicker.

Men have a better sense of direction because they don't spend their whole lives waiting for other people to fix their problems.

If you're going places, you need a good sense of direction. Human being vs human doing. It's why we stand up to pee.

Why men have a better sense of direction

Men in general have more difficult lives than women. As a man we have a full understand about our low sexual value, that we start off with. Women on the other hand, get everything handed to them. I remember this attractive blonde girl telling me how in London, she gets free taxis, free drinks, free entry into expensive clubs. As well as pretty much any job she wants, because she is a woman. It may sound like an exaggeration but I have heard this many times before. Combined with feminism and modern culture making out manipulative, cruel women are somehow strong and fighting the patriarchy. And not failing to mention this lack of taking responsibility on the premise, that 'following your heart' is always right, aka, being able to rationalise your stupid decisions.

The sentiments of this are not entirely negative, I suppose what is irritating is how the bias is simply not understood. Which is the case in most other parts of the world. But this is the juvenile attitude that is perpetuated through the media and education system. If you were to personify it with a character, you can imagine a spoilt rich white teenage girl. Who thinks that her parents not buying her a car, is some form of cruelty or oppression.

Men on the other hand, need to constantly strive to improve themselves in order to get sex. The inequality and harsh facts of life, are clearly obvious. Strength is admired, morality and good character is rarely rewarded. This cynical attitude applies to all aspects of life. And is branded as politically incorrect or 'bitter' by the mainstream narrative. However by playing the role of a victim, you will simply find yourself swept up by the tide. Nature doesn't reward losers or those who can adapt and understand her laws.

This all links in with the topic title, when dogs are biting at your arse (like Elliot Hulse says), you have nowhere to run, instead forwards. I also believe this red pill understanding of life, which only really men get (Women get it at a much later stage). Pushes you towards more higher refined tastes. Understanding that you are alone essentially, and the need to be self dependent is completely vital. Which also explains why men solely go to ashrams and monasteries. Everything else is conditional.

Tell them too much, they wouldn't understand; tell them what they know, they would yawn.
They have to move up by responding to challenges, not too easy not too hard, until they paused at what they always think is the end of the road for all time instead of a momentary break in an endless upward spiral

Gotta love the hamster comment at the bottom of the article.

In my experience, the men I know are not good at directions. I, the woman, am better. I am also an experienced navigator, using maps since childhood. But I also have a good sense of direction, and a sense of my place on the planet. I use cardinal directions, the sun, and bodies of water to orient myself when going anywhere and rarely get lost. I also travel as much as I possibly can. I am an experienced hiker. It seems experience can be the better factor, since the men I know were not used to maps, respond better verbally to direction, and get lost easily. I also note landmarks when going somewhere to note my return trip. I may have more testosterone, but I also come from a matriarchal family with no fathers at all for 5 generations (they all died young or were not there at all). As I see women becoming more and more independent, they will learn to adapt and become better at orienting if they are taught.

Righteeo then.
For sure, worry less about navigation & more about why all your matriarch's
are dealing with such deadbeats. Pun intended. [Image: confused.gif]
