Serbo-Croat: most useful language to learn for W. Europeans?

Most people here would say : Russian, Portuguese or Chinese (Mandarin) are the most useful languages to learn nowadays, with our mind set on gaming women, and enjoying life while traveling abroad, for short or long periods (relocation)..

But, I'm starting to consider.. Serbo-Croat!

Because with this language, you'd get access to many separate, quite safe, promising, and downright beautiful countries :

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serbo-Croatian

For those of us in particular who are afraid of the downfall of Western Europe (see migrants invasion thread), well, no need to flee to SEA : let's go to Balkans States (where migrants just temporarily pass through, by the way, they won't stay).. It's safe, close to Western Europe, culturally quite close, with (very) beautiful and diverse women and, at least when I went there few years ago, it was cheap..

So, a language that gives us access to not one, but 5 countries, 4 of which are perfectly safe democracies (Bosnia being a bit different I guess).. why not consider it..?

Now you may think : Russian language has all that and more.

Yes, but.. how would you obtain the right of residency in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakstan, Belarussia??

So, if I were from the US, I would learn Russian, clearly. But being European, I think serbo-croat might be the right choice (we can settle hassle-free in former Yugoslavia, no need for visas)

So.. specialists of former Yugoslavia, what do you think of my idea? Are your countries the (close) safe and beautiful heaven we Westerners long for? For long-term resettlement I mean..

It could be, if you have underworld connections.

If only you knew how bad things really are.

Speaking of my country (Croatia): as you said, it is safe, close to WE, culturally close to WE, the women are beautiful, and it is cheap (depending on where you live).

However, there are two considerable negatives:

- Western culture and values are rapidly penetrating our society, there's no escaping it. As a consequence, women are becoming more damaged with every passing year. SJWism is slowly becoming the dominant social ideology, while the number of conservatives (the majority of them being cucks) is decreasing. I can't think of a conservative movement like Fidesz in Hungary even existing here, let alone being successful and gaining support among the population.

- our economy is in shambles. The private sector is slowly but efficiently being smothered by the ever-increasing welfare state, taxes are enormous, bureaucracy is a state of its own. 72% of our voters work for the state, or live off government subsidies in some form. So if you're thinking of starting a business here, don't. We've almost reached a point where you can't even fart without the blessing of the state. Educated professionals such as engineers, scientists, doctors etc. are emigrating (actually, fleeing would be a better term) abroad in large numbers.

So if you're looking for a short-term resettlement, then yes, Croatia might give you what you're searching for. But long-term? I'd recommend against resettling here. Other countries in Central Europe, like for example Hungary or Poland, would be a better choice.

If you've learned Serbo-croat and are a red-pill, preferably Alpha male, then you'll have no problem making underworld connections, if you so feel inclined...

Ok, but being based in Croatia, you could game nearby Serbian or Bosnian women, who're much more traditional and isolated and less-Westernized, I guess..

Also, for example, investing in tourism on the famous and highly-livable Croatian coast, would surely be a clever move..? You'd get high quality of life, coming quite cheap too, and surrounded by stunners... and once again, you can branch out at any time to neighbouring Serbia or Montenegro or Bosnia..

It's a good idea if you want to immerse yourself in the Balkans. Serbo-Croatian is spoken throughout former Yugoslav republics (Serbia, Croatia, BiH, Montenegro as well as Slovenia and Macedonia where the language is still widely understood). It is part of the South Slavic branch and is mutually intelligible with Bulgarian and Macedonian the other South Slavic languages. I lived in the Balkans observed the similarities and behaviour between all the different nationalities that I have mentioned. Macedonians and Serbs frequently travel to Bulgaria for business and holiday in the various ski and summer resorts along the Black Sea coasts.

My pick of the bunch would be Serbia. Why? It's cheap, great cuisine and the people. Belgrade is a cool spot with some of the hottest women around, not to mention being a great party city. During the summer you can party on the various splavi parked on the Danube.

Serbian dudes are perhaps the most red pill you will ever come across so none of that Western feminist liberal bullshit that we see in W. Europe is tolerated. Feminist liberal SJWs like Sonja Bisserko and Svetlana Broz (grandaughter of Tito) are routinely ignored or mocked. Gender roles are clearly defined. There is no bullshit with these people. I have stayed numerous times in the homes of Serbian friends and it was refreshingly old school. Men sat at the table eating sarma, the various Rostilj dishes drinking slivovica with the women sitting separately attending to the men's needs.

In Serbia you have a mish mash of different cultures ranging from Balkan (Kosovo & south central Serbia) to multi ethnic, multi confessional Vojvodina which has a strong Central European, Austro-Hungarian feel to it. Take a stroll through picturesque towns like Novi Sad, Sombor, Kikinda, Backi Petrovac, Kovacica and Subotica and you could be forgiven for thinking that you are somewhere in Hungary or Slovakia not a Balkan nation. If you are looking to spend time in a Balkan nation and experience what the Serbo-Croatian speaking world has to offer, you cannot go wrong with Serbia.

More Balkan Power® per square metre than anywhere else.

Perhaps I can dispatch your enthusiasm with a joke, here. A Croation puts on their resume the impressive number of languages they know: Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian.

But in fact, they are virtually the same language. Thus, the joke is on the ignorant employer.

The moral? You might want to rethink your criteria for "best."

Ah yes, I forgot about tourism, the only branch of Croatian economy that is still functioning well.

I guess if you're willing to invest in real estate, you could manage pretty well. Let's say you own a 2-apartment house in some tourist resort on the Croatian coast. Renting both apartments during the summer season (Jun-Jul-Aug) for a price of, say, 60 Euros/day, and assuming your capacity is more or less full during the season (~90 days), you would earn 10800 Euros per year. That's not bad when you consider that the average monthly salary in Croatia is roughly 750 Euros.

As for Serbian and Bosnian women, yeah, that could work. Being based somewhere on the coast, you would also have easy access to a wide variety of European girls who like to spend their summer holidays in Croatia.

So I want to switch gears on this old thread.

I'm interested in learning Serbo-Croat - are there any good resources people can recommend? Textbooks, websites/online courses, TV shows to watch on YouTube, etc.

As I understand it, Serbo-Croats (South Slavic) are readily understood by Czechs (North Slavic).

Beyond that, however? Probably Slovakians (a small nation)...but not Poles.

Still - that adds many millions of potential communicants, and it is more market friendly than Croatia!

Orson, I'm not quite understanding your post. I'm not really interested in "markets" and I'm not interested in looking into the Balkans as a place where an American can pick up a bunch of chicks. I liked the area and I want to spend more time traveling there.

Perhaps I'd consider doing some investing in the region some time in the distant future but that's not really a consideration right now. Croatia is already a pretty popular tourist destination among the big traveling countries and Montenegro seems poised to be the next one. But I digress.

Next time I have some free time to do some long term travel I'm expecting to go to Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Montenegro (in addition to Albania and Macedonia but I'm not terribly interested in adding much to the 10-20 words of Albanian I know). If I wanted to communicate with the absolute highest number of people then I'd be learning Russian this second, but that's not my goal in this endeavor.

Learning Serbian/Croatian is only useful if you want to live in any of the ex-Yugoslavian countries for an extended period of time.

Other than that it really isn't useful at all.

My point is that Czech is not so burdened by too much stifling regulation like Croatia. Thus, the economy is more growth-oriented.

That and since South-Slavic (Croatian) is understood in Croatia and nearby (Serbia, etc), having a North-option where one can also be understood means learning Serbo-croat makes more sense because one has MORE options.

More options means more freedom. The equation is win+win+win=more happiness.

The Russian language is in the same linguistic family. I still think Russian would make more sense unless you were set on living in Croatia for life. You could always pick up another Slavic language later.

Serbo-Croatian can get you by in all the ex-Yugoslav countries as well as Bulgaria. There is some utility to learning it, but hopefully you're into the region's history or culture... If we total it up, i think only 30-35 million speak serbo-croatian. Way more for Russian.

It's a different language. We Croats have some similar words and pronunciations with Russian, but not enough for someone to completely understand other one without learning it before.

No, I'm referring to opportunities. You can learn Serbo-Croatian and confine yourself to the Western Balkans, or you can learn Russian, and have access to way more people and all the ex-FSU countries.

Russian and Serbo-Croatian can't be readily understood by speakers of these languages. Vocab is way too different.

Considering 80%+ of young women in croatia and serbia speak at least intermediate to near fluent English I don't think learning the language will help other then maybe impress them a little bit.

I spent 6 weeks trying to study Serbian in Belgrade and got pretty much nowhere, its not like Spanish, its much harder.

Maybe learning a few words and how to read cyrillic if you plan on staying a long time could be useful.

I would take a year of studying 20 hours a week plus living in the country to get anywhere, I don't think its worth it. Even then I don't think a local girl would really care THAT much, for the same 2,000+ hours you would spend in studying you could work on your game, money, muscles and other aspects that will help you a lot more with Serbian/Crotian girls that all speak English vs learning their language.

Only if you are really planning on staying in the country for years would I bother.

If you do plan on learning a slavic language I would learn Russian first as its far more useful and countries that speak Russian like Russia, Ukraine and Belarus typically have much lower English comprehension levels.

Finding countries where lots of girls don't speak English and specifically honing in on those girls allows you to bang above your weight class. However in Serbia and Croatia those opportunties are limited. I have never met a girl in Serbia that didn't speak good to near-perfect English.

Go to Serbia its amazing but be prepared for really tough competition. I'd be focusing on working on becoming more alpha, more jacked and more like the local guys. Learning the language in this particular instance would give you little ROI compared to the time spent elsewhere.

Good luck!

I spent four months in Serbia, and it seemed about half of the girls I hung out with didn't speak english, and if they really did and I was unaware of it, they were unwilling to speak it around me. This is a random observation, but, I think the dudes are more willing to try speaking english because they care less about making mistakes, whereas girls do care about mistakes.
