Henson pulled into the parking lot outside Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers in a majority white neighborhood of Milwaukee, WI on Monday to look at a watch. Instead of paying the 6’10 big man rapt attention the way they would most any other potential buyer, though, store employees locked the front door and implored him to leave. After he rang the door bell, those inside moved to the back of the room.

That’s when a pair of police cruisers parked nearby and kept an eye on Henson for five minutes. The officers subsequently approached and began peppering him with questions, including where he procured the luxury vehicle he was driving. The former University of North Carolina student explained the car was on lease as the result of an endorsement deal, and that he was simply there to do some regular shopping.

After running Henson’s license plates to confirm his story, the policemen finally went to the back of the shop and told Schwanke-Kasten employees that there was nothing irregular occurring – except to them, apparently, a black man doing something other than committing a crime.

So, what seems to be the problem here? Employees profiled someone in their own best interest, a misunderstanding happened (pretending like everybody needs to know every random celebrity X is some huge narcissistic entitlement), the employees got enlightened who the guy was.

I'm sure he was wearing a sharp suit and didn't dress like Trayvon for them to have such a reaction. It's nothing out of the ordinary to have such a gut reaction when you consider that many rich blacks still dress and act like they're straight from the hood

The store probably did lose out on some good revenue...but being gleeful that some racist didn't get the money? No. I think people can carry racial, cultural or gender biases if they want to. The jewelry store loses the sale, end of story. They shouldn't be forced to sell to that guy the same way a business shouldn't have to bake cakes for gay weddings.

Like I said, it probably makes them look stupid to the general public, but to their 'regular' customers in whitefish bay, it probably makes them look better that they are 'keeping the riff raff out'. Like if Mr and Mrs. Howell from Gilligan's island were regular shoppers there, they would love that this guy was turned away.

Steve Sailer has written a lot about Milwaukee and how it has changed in the last few generations. While interesting to me, as an outsider, it sadly sounds like the place went from a middle-class workers haven to a welfare and crime central. Guess the reasons why.

The article below I would recommend as a good way to understand Midwest race relations. Its the history of Milwaukee and how the city went from a very white, German, Nordic style of socialism into the rough times and crime it has now.

Were all racist. Psychological studies have shown this time and time again. We can pat ourselves on the back for being comfortable with each other and doing business with other races, but we still have our racial and socioeconomic biases.

So no, I'm not gleeful the player didn't support "some racist" with his money. Even if the jewelry shop's owners and patrons are stuck up nose in the air snobs with a penchant for avoiding other races...whatever. This is somewhat interesting, actually a bit humorous, but I don't really care one way or the other.

I've been profiled before in my gym clothes as a young white thug. I'm sure in the future I'll be profiled as an old white homeless guy if I'm wearing my old college hoodie and sweatpants. Yeah it's annoying. Maddening even. But you get over it.

Then we're in agreement, I say it's all good about the shop's actions. Who cares if the rest of the country venti lattes out over your actions, they are residents of that place and if the people are cool with it then everybody else can be quiet.

Good articles. I really enjoy downtown Milwaukee but its got some very solid dividing lines as to where you should and should not go.

I think its an extreme example of 'white flight' ie. when a cities heavy industry located downtown collapses, so does the middle class. The people that have the means to leave, go to the suburbs and fortify themselves while the poor move into the downtown void because housing is affordable, you don't need a car to get around and if you were born there you were trapped there.

There is also a rumor, I'm not sure if its true that Wisconsin is a welfare mecca compared to Illinois (Badgercare health care mainly) and alot of poor black from Illinois have migrated to southern Wisconsin.

It's something to be atoned for.
You have to monitor your thoughts and actions for it.
You have to publicly humble/humiliate yourself over it.
You "raise awareness" for it in order to show how not-racist™(pious) you are.
