Self Defense Alternatives

A long spear would work great, versus an invader who had no gun.

The problem is the criminals will still be armed, and law abiding citizens defending their homes will end up like Sean Taylor.

Quote:Quote:

In the fall of 2007, Mitchell had stayed at Taylor’s home for four days while attending a birthday celebration for the football player’s sister. Mitchell, of Fort Myers, was a friend of the boyfriend of Sasha Johnson, Taylor’s sister.

During those four days, Mitchell hung out with Taylor, who even paid the teen $300 to help him mow the lawn and clean the home’s pool deck, according to the state.

At the birthday party, he spied Johnson opening a gift from her brother — $10,000 in cash tucked in a purse. He also saw Taylor’s gift to another sibling, the same amount of cash.

Weeks later, Mitchell broke into Taylor’s home but came away empty-handed, Mato told jurors. He decided to return, but this time with his four friends.

Prosecutors say he, Rivera and the others drove from Fort Myers, believing Taylor was not home.

But Taylor, nursing an injury at home as his team played in Tampa, confronted the intruders after one of them kicked in his master bedroom door. Rivera shot Taylor in the leg, and he bled to death, Mato said.

Taylor had grabbed a machete he kept in the bedroom for protection and was shot while protecting his infant daughter, his girlfriend, Jackie Garcia Lena, testified Tuesday.

Guys, if a burglar can enter your home, you're doing things wrong.

This is a picture I took of my house.

[Image: Heavily-Fortified-South-Guard-Tower-with...121371.jpg]

Tips:

Make sure that your windows are too small for an intruder to crawl through. Then add bars, just to be sure.
Bullet proof glass in the windows.
Live in the basement. The above ground house is just for show. Dig a bunker under your house and live in there. You can still entertain guests in the above ground portion of your house, but be sure to sleep in the bunker.
Barb wire. Lots of it.
Definitely dig a moat and fill it with some smaller sharks. They probably won't present much danger to your average swimmer, but they'll send a firm message about what waits inside.
Obviously, lots of guard dogs. Just keep them and the sharks separate. This will cut down on replacement expenses.
Goes without saying, don't let women inside your house. They can't be trusted.
Make sure that your doorframes aren't made out of cheap wood. In fact, your exterior doors should swing outwards and lock into a metal frame. Try kicking your door in. Use sledge hammer on it. If it doesn't hold, get a new one.

Sure, some people may accuse me of going overboard, but I'd rather have these safety features and not need them, than need them and not have them.

What's your opinion on automated machine gun installations? I like the idea of a robot automatically gunning down an intruder, but I'm worried I may one day absentmindedly forget to deactivate it before I walk within firing range.

I've always thought it would be badass to have a pet jaguar. Much cooler than a mere tabby cat, and with the added benefit of wantonly tearing intruders to shreds.

Guns will never go away. No amount of laws or enforcement will ever stop the manufacturing of arms and ammunition. When guns are outlawed, accept the fact that criminals will still have guns. You just need to find a way to do the same. It's not impossible to build your own guns...

A reader was sent this collection of photos said to be of Pakistani gunsmiths and gun dealers. The photos appear to be from different sources and a few look like frames taken from videos. While I would not want to fire these guns, the results they achieve in poorly lit rural workshops is impressive. Note how they load the ammunition: using a hammer instead of a loading press and very primitive dies.

Apparently it's possible to 3D print a gun.

Suits - you're kidding, right? I don't quite get sarcasm so I can't tell if you're joking or you have a house that's similar to that. I don't know what you tell the girls when you bring them in.

For those of you in anti-gun zones like Canada and Australia, do they still allow you to keep guns for hunting?

SunW, no one here would joke about home security. I live out in the country and like Suits said it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. As you can see from Suits' house, the camouflage exterior allows the structure to be easily disguised from aircraft. I'm actually in the process of implementing this strategy on my residence as well. Also, anyone who doesn't utilize barbed wire is clearly playing with fire in their day to day life.

As far as bringing back girls, keep them upstairs. My home appears as a ranch style house with two garages, but the basement goes four stories deep. Each layer being solid concrete with an extra layer of brick for obvious fortification reasons. We also drilled multiple holes in each direction every 20 feet to insert carbon fiber rods. That way the structure will stay intact regardless of disaster. The first level of the basement is actually a trap door under a rug, which is also under a false layer of oak hardwood to throw off burglars. The girls only see the first level of my modest ranch style home which in reality is rarely used. I mean, who actually keeps throw pillows on their family room couch?

While I agree with Suits on most of the basics, there are a lot of aspects I dislike about his home, as displayed in the photo. First off, he's foolish to live so close to a source of water. I mean come on, assuming it's not freshwater, his sharks are going to outgrow the property and hop right out of the moat into freedom. Seriously Suits, there is no way you have the recommended 93 yards (85.0392 meters) between your moat and a natural water source. And don't even get me started on the issues of pirates, hurricanes, or desalinization.

Also, why the hell does your house have such a narrow base? We all know fire moves upward and earthquakes can happen outside of their typical regions. Tectonic plates can be unpredictable. Honestly Suits, the best survival rating I can give you in good conscience is a 78/100. PM me if you want some tips on solidifying some obvious weaknesses in your strategy.

Don't know if Oz is joking but I've got a story about a buddy that did kendo for years.

So back in high school I had a buddy that was about 5'8, maybe 150lbs, so not a big guy by any means, and a really nice guy overall. Every time we would do some garage boxing (as young males are prone to do), he would get demolished by guys smaller than him. We never really gave him shit for it because he was a genuinely nice guy and we figured it was the pacifist in him.

Anyway one weekend four of us, including Mr. Nice guy, all go out to a house party of a friend from a different school. After a few hours of drinking and partying some of the guys from the other school, realized that they outnumbered us and one of our guys insulted his honor or some nonsense. We were outnumbered 10 to 4 so I pretty much accepted the fact that we were getting an ass kicking.

At that point I was just plotting revenge because I already knew how this was going to turn out. The beginning started out, pretty much what I expected; with the other guys talking shit and pushing us. The middle was mass chaos with everybody swinging and the back of my head getting heavily assaulted because I double legged a guy. The end was a surprise because Mr Nice Guy came in with a pool stick (there was a pool table in the house) and single handedly took out 5 guys. It was actually very impressive, the strikes were small and compact but his footwork kept everybody at a distance.

Afterwards he told us that he would never have attacked people but did it because he was worried about the safety of the back of my head, or us, whatever. Anyway he said he would be very surprised if he couldn't take on a few guys, as long as he had some sort of stick on hand. From what I remember, his style wasn't big knockout swings like a samurai movie but more jabbing the pool cue towards the face and neck when someone moved in and whacking them on the side of the head as he moved away. It seemed to wear people out and frustrate them, which led to more rushing, which he would stop with a quick thrust to the face then rinse and repeat.

I am by no means an expert but it was effective in that one experience I've had so, maybe there is something to it, maybe not. Just thought I'd share.

Get a dog. Criminals hate dogs and don't usually target houses that have a dog especially a big dog. This house about a block away from me has a big German Shepherd and the owner leaves it outside in the yard on purpose to scare people that walk by to not think about his house as a target.

how about just a dog sign to scare them
