PapayaTapper - Great post. Gladly gave you a +1. This is a 'therapy' everyone should try out, especially those that sit for large portions of the day.

I recently got an Innova brand inversion table on Amazon shipped to me for like $90. I find it very sturdy. It's very heavy, feels very safe. Surprised it only cost $90, seems a good value.

I am wondering about a protocol, or minutes of inversion to shoot for?

I have started slow and working up... I was thinking my ultimate goal would be 10 minutes 1x per day at full vertical. What do you think of this? Should it be more / less?

If I can get 2 min a day on I find that sufficient. 10 min seems excessive

I think it depends. I have a table from Exerpeutic that I got on Amazon for about $90, works a treat. As I travel 2 weeks out of the month, there are long periods I can't use it daily. I know that in the offices I work in those weeks, I tend to have bad posture, slouching and bending my spine. I really feel it when I get home and use it for the first time in a while. These times I use it for maybe 5-10 minutes.

If I'm home for a stretch, after that first recovery period where I bend my spine back into shape, I feel that just a few minutes is sufficient, there is no pain or discomfort from the initial readjustment.

PapayaTapper,

I can see you are obviously a guy who has taken good care of his back.
That shit is so important.. Younger guys, listen to PT..!

Once your back goes, it is a real bitch getting it back.

I wanna ask if you have any experience, or opinions about some of the
newer modalities in this field. I've had different practitioners, chiros mostly,
trying to sell me on a "plan" using things like a Vax-D machine.

I've also had physical therapy where they used an old, soviet style, hydraulic
machine... that was kind of like the Rack... stretched you a little more each time.
Then relaxed.. then stretched again.

As a guy with an awful back.. finding the right thing to help has been a chore.

TIA for any brain food. Excellent sheet!!

Excellent question Breeze: The other component I believe is critical is core strength. It's well known that keeping a strong core reduces stress / strain on the back (especially lower back) so a good ab/core program is absolutely vital part of a healthy back program...its the other half of the equation

EDIT Im not familiar with any of the other machinery you mention above so I cant offer any insight

Ahh... good old core strength. I was hoping that wouldn't come up, but I
kinda knew it would, as I am lacking in my own core strength department.

Which also brings up inevitable comparisons, like "The chicken or the egg."

Having a bad back, makes it harder to work your core. Lack of working
your core, leads to a weaker back, one that is subject to injury.

The Merry Go Round of SUCK!

I guess I need to find a very basic, baby steps core program, and just stick
with it, until I realize some positives.

Thanks again PT, appreciate. [Image: thumb.gif]

Hey Breeze

Have you made any progress on your core/ back condition?

Good write up.

I’m curious about using inversion table to increase height.

I understand inversion stretches the spine which can give you 1-2in of height.

This is temporary and the spine will decompress again due to gravity.

Let’s say I’m doing inversion on a regular basis 7 days a week for 6 months.

Will the lengthening in my spine become somewhat permanent?

I would love to see some research papers written on this subject. Been searching google with no luck.

I was able to pick a table up off of CL for $75.

I've been doing it for about two weeks, twice a day.

So far, it's been beneficial.

Update- I have been doing inversion therapy for awhile now and it works great. I now do 3-4 min every other day, but you could do every day if you wanted.

Really helpful especially after sitting in a car or plane for a long time.

Thanks again to OP PapayaTapper!

I do 4 min every day.

One warning be very careful how you turn upside down...I turned to shutoff my alarm and felt something pull in my lower back and it was sore for quite sometime.
Maybe something previous who knows?

Inverted crunches and squats are awesome too
