How do you guys justify 'fun'

This is inspired by the manly hobbies thread.

Everyone here is dedicated to travel, game and lifestyle design. In that respect it is all about self improvement.

How do you guys let loose? I feel like videogames/tv/internet are the cupcakes of the free time world. No nutritional value.

I ate a cupcake yesterday. It set me back on my fitness goals and provided no nutrients and fleeting happiness. I was struck with how similar this is to something like WOW or plants vs zombies or basically any TV show.

Am I going to look back in 10 years and be disappointed I missed seasons of 'real world' or am I going to be disappointed that I can't speak spanish, spend my weekends making more money, DJ'n, or travelling?

Just like fitness/health, American society is set up for us to fail. We are trained to become consumerist knobs that eat at mcdonalds after work and go home to out tv set.

How much purely wasteful time do you guys allow yourselves and how do you spend it? How do you deal with the guilt that you feel from spending your time this way, or am I alone in that feeling?

One rule I have set up for myself is to only watch TV in a social setting. (ie. friends all come over each week to watch show A)

Dude, honestly, I see no difference between playing video games and banging girls. Both are hedonistic pursuits to me.

"Lifestyle design"? Stupid catch-word trying to make you think you should be doing something other than what you are currently doing. If you're happy, what difference does it make what you do?

That said, the reason most of us here like to travel and game women is because we aren't happy with what we were doing beforehand. But if we were, there'd really be no reason for change.

Real talk. There is no reason to criticize other peoples lifestyles, do you and what you want to do. Some people want to get a married at 23 and start having a family life, its all good if you want that. Others like me want to travel and sleep with all different types of attractive women.

I justify "fun" because it is that FUN! I dont give a shit if it has any relative value.

Life is to be enjoyed! Cant possibly enjoy ur life without having "fun". What ever that may be

This is something I've been thinking about lately. I decided recently to cut myself off from video games. Starcraft 2 is so tempting, but I have a feeling that if I open that box life won't be the same for a while.

I think the key word is "moderation". American consumer society really forgot this concept. Games like World of Warcraft destroy the idea all together.

If something makes you happy, you should do it. But if something is forcing you into an unbalanced life, then you should knock it off.

Take a look at your life and ask yourself if you're pleasure pursuits are impeding your intellectual, sexual, social life. Are they interfering with your goals and dreams? Often times we use "fun" as a way to distract ourselves from those things. You gotta take a long look and be honest.

I think a big idea is also to learn to enjoy beneficial activities like working out, reading, ect. If you can make your fun fruitful then its win win.
