So, I just spent a whole week in Playa del Carmen and decided to post this data sheet. The city has changed a lot since the last time I was there (two years ago) but the basic features of the place are still there.
For starters, Playa del Carmen is a beach resort of the Mayan Riviera (in the Mexican State of Quintana Roo) which is located 68 km (42 mi) south of Cancun. There are two ways to get there. First, getting to Cancun and then taking the coastal highway to the place. Your ground options from the Cancun airport are: To take a shuttle (USD 9); to take ‘el autobús del ADO’, (‘the ADO bus’) with departures every 30 minutes (USD 7); to take a taxi for up to USD 40 (be sure to ask the price to the driver before you get on board); but if you are going to visit more places in the Mayan Riviera in your trip (Cancún, Tulum, Puerto Aventuras, Xpu-Ha, Puerto Morelos, Isla Mujeres, Akumal, Chichen Itza, Holbox, etc.) your best option is, by far, to rent a car. The second way to get to Playa del Carmen is only for those who are in a cruiser trip with a stop at Cozumel (30-45 min from Playa); just take the ferry (USD 20 round trip).
Playa del Carmen has grew exponentially in the last 20 years for the following reasons:
Unlike Cancun, which was corporate designed from the very beginning, Playa is the typical beach town with a unique flavor which grew naturally, and it has the charm of a small beach town with the exciting atmosphere of a big hot spot.
European tourists just got fed up of the hordes of feral American Spring breakers that vandalize Cancun every year and the Miami style services of the place, and moved in masse to the ‘real Mexican beach town’ of Playa.
For some period, it was less expensive than Cancun, but not anymore.
Everything is in just one place –La Quinta Avenida. There is no need to look somewhere else.
It’s in the middle of everywhere. If you plan to travel all the Mayan Riviera, Playa is the place you should use as your operations point to move wherever you want every day.
Due to the spectacular beauty of the beach, hotel chains have built large all-inclusive hotels in the North end of Playa. Developers have followed suit building luxury apartment buildings. On the South end, a large and exclusive development called ‘Playacar’ was built, including hotels and condos. This, of course, has risen the prices of services.
Accommodations.
There are literally hundreds of options to get accommodated in Playa, from cheap small hostels to luxury all-inclusive mammoth hotels; in the middle you will find shared rooms, small but nice inexpensive hotels, apartments and houses. Just check out sites like booking.com, airbnb.mx or hotels.com. However, since the main objective of this forum readers when traveling is to pick up girls, I strongly recommend you to book an apartment as close as possible to ‘La Quinta Avenida’ since this solves two logistics problems: distance from the hot places and the total confidence that you are not going to have a problem taking a slut to your place. The very first feature online condos and hotels advertise is how far they are located from ‘La Quinta’ –On it, one bloc, two blocs, five minutes walking distance, etc. If you travel in group you can find two and three bedroom apartments. For this kind of places ‘Playacar’ is even a good option to book a large apartment or even a house, although you may need to take a taxi to get to La Quinta (no more than 5 minutes). Almost all of the apartments listed online have a kitchenette and a refrigerator. There is a SAMS club, and a Wal-Mart (or its Mexican versions: Comercial Mexicana, Chedraui or Soriana) in town. There is a Costco in Cancun as well.
The Beach.
There are four different sections of the beach in Playa, but only two are of your interest –Playa Tucán and Playa Mamitas. From the South end to the ferry station (‘ferry a Cozumel’ in the map) there is Playacar, a beach section named after the development built behind there. From the ferry station to the new pier (‘muelle nuevo’ in the map) you have Playa Tucán; from the new pier to the Reef Coco Beach Hotel you have Playa Mamitas; finally from this point up North you have the Playa Norte. Playa Tucán is a place mainly used by Mexican tourists; while Playa Mamitas is the choice of foreigners. Here the hot spot is the Playa Mamitas Beach Club and the other beach clubs around it. This place is also where rock concerts and beach parties are thrown on a regular basis attracting a large number of people, mostly packers. A good place for day game.
La Quinta Avenida (The 5th Avenue).
This is a pedestrian avenue that crosses the city south to north. It properly begins at the ferry station and ends up at Calle 34 Norte (34th north street). Everything moves around this place which is live 24 hours a day. Restaurants, nice small hotels, apartments, bars, clubs, boutiques, massage saloons, all kind of shops, car rentals, drugs, travel agencies, ATMs, taxis and an endless parade of hot girls is what you are going to find here.
Accommodations. Much to my surprise I found that hotels and condos here are not more expensive than the rest of Playa. The excessive supply of options has lowered the prices.
Food. The quality and prices of the restaurants have standardized at a very good level, don’t get deluded by the exterior appearance of a place like ‘Karen’s’ or ‘Pez Vela’ (simple and modest) and ‘Sur Steak House’ or ‘Ristorane Italiano’ (brand new and luxurious) they will offer you the same dishes with almost the same prices. It seems that the excessive competition in the place have pushed up the standards. If you don’t mind to spend 40 USD in a dinner, may I recommend you ‘Ristorane da Bruno’ (12th St. and 5th Av.) the Italian food here is just good, fucking unbelievable good. ‘Sur Steak House’ is another must (10th St. and 5th Av.) an Argentinian style restaurant. Those restaurants which didn’t arrive on time to the 5th Av. or cannot afford it have moved to the 10th Av. and they are very good and less expensive options. If you are travelling on a budget you will find plenty of options, from pizza shops, Subway spots, and traditional Mexican restaurants.
Sluts. Temperature heats up at the 5th from 6 pm, everybody wants to see and be seen. People come in hordes to have dinner, an ice cream, a coffee, to buy clothes, souvenirs, jewelry, a personalized handmade cigar, to smoke hookah, have a massage, buy a trip, etc. They walk down the street in a slow, lazy pace, getting sure they capture every detail of the place, and that everybody knows about their presence. Even the people staying at the expensive all-inclusive hotels come here, dropping the dinners, drinks and clubs they had paid for. By 8 pm there’s a peak, the street is crowded with tourists from all over the World; however, there is a pack that will bring your attention, an endless parade of hot girls getting ready for the night. Just take your dinner in one of the outside tables of any restaurant and enjoy the view. There are sad moments though, you will also see blonde women with stunning bodies, lustrous long hair and beautiful faces, but whose beauty has been completely ruined by horrendous and grotesque sleeve and leg tattoos. I almost cried.
