Playa del Carmen as of August 2015

So, I just spent a whole week in Playa del Carmen and decided to post this data sheet. The city has changed a lot since the last time I was there (two years ago) but the basic features of the place are still there.

For starters, Playa del Carmen is a beach resort of the Mayan Riviera (in the Mexican State of Quintana Roo) which is located 68 km (42 mi) south of Cancun. There are two ways to get there. First, getting to Cancun and then taking the coastal highway to the place. Your ground options from the Cancun airport are: To take a shuttle (USD 9); to take ‘el autobús del ADO’, (‘the ADO bus’) with departures every 30 minutes (USD 7); to take a taxi for up to USD 40 (be sure to ask the price to the driver before you get on board); but if you are going to visit more places in the Mayan Riviera in your trip (Cancún, Tulum, Puerto Aventuras, Xpu-Ha, Puerto Morelos, Isla Mujeres, Akumal, Chichen Itza, Holbox, etc.) your best option is, by far, to rent a car. The second way to get to Playa del Carmen is only for those who are in a cruiser trip with a stop at Cozumel (30-45 min from Playa); just take the ferry (USD 20 round trip).

Playa del Carmen has grew exponentially in the last 20 years for the following reasons:
Unlike Cancun, which was corporate designed from the very beginning, Playa is the typical beach town with a unique flavor which grew naturally, and it has the charm of a small beach town with the exciting atmosphere of a big hot spot.
European tourists just got fed up of the hordes of feral American Spring breakers that vandalize Cancun every year and the Miami style services of the place, and moved in masse to the ‘real Mexican beach town’ of Playa.
For some period, it was less expensive than Cancun, but not anymore.
Everything is in just one place –La Quinta Avenida. There is no need to look somewhere else.
It’s in the middle of everywhere. If you plan to travel all the Mayan Riviera, Playa is the place you should use as your operations point to move wherever you want every day.
Due to the spectacular beauty of the beach, hotel chains have built large all-inclusive hotels in the North end of Playa. Developers have followed suit building luxury apartment buildings. On the South end, a large and exclusive development called ‘Playacar’ was built, including hotels and condos. This, of course, has risen the prices of services.

Accommodations.
There are literally hundreds of options to get accommodated in Playa, from cheap small hostels to luxury all-inclusive mammoth hotels; in the middle you will find shared rooms, small but nice inexpensive hotels, apartments and houses. Just check out sites like booking.com, airbnb.mx or hotels.com. However, since the main objective of this forum readers when traveling is to pick up girls, I strongly recommend you to book an apartment as close as possible to ‘La Quinta Avenida’ since this solves two logistics problems: distance from the hot places and the total confidence that you are not going to have a problem taking a slut to your place. The very first feature online condos and hotels advertise is how far they are located from ‘La Quinta’ –On it, one bloc, two blocs, five minutes walking distance, etc. If you travel in group you can find two and three bedroom apartments. For this kind of places ‘Playacar’ is even a good option to book a large apartment or even a house, although you may need to take a taxi to get to La Quinta (no more than 5 minutes). Almost all of the apartments listed online have a kitchenette and a refrigerator. There is a SAMS club, and a Wal-Mart (or its Mexican versions: Comercial Mexicana, Chedraui or Soriana) in town. There is a Costco in Cancun as well.

The Beach.
There are four different sections of the beach in Playa, but only two are of your interest –Playa Tucán and Playa Mamitas. From the South end to the ferry station (‘ferry a Cozumel’ in the map) there is Playacar, a beach section named after the development built behind there. From the ferry station to the new pier (‘muelle nuevo’ in the map) you have Playa Tucán; from the new pier to the Reef Coco Beach Hotel you have Playa Mamitas; finally from this point up North you have the Playa Norte. Playa Tucán is a place mainly used by Mexican tourists; while Playa Mamitas is the choice of foreigners. Here the hot spot is the Playa Mamitas Beach Club and the other beach clubs around it. This place is also where rock concerts and beach parties are thrown on a regular basis attracting a large number of people, mostly packers. A good place for day game.

La Quinta Avenida (The 5th Avenue).
This is a pedestrian avenue that crosses the city south to north. It properly begins at the ferry station and ends up at Calle 34 Norte (34th north street). Everything moves around this place which is live 24 hours a day. Restaurants, nice small hotels, apartments, bars, clubs, boutiques, massage saloons, all kind of shops, car rentals, drugs, travel agencies, ATMs, taxis and an endless parade of hot girls is what you are going to find here.
Accommodations. Much to my surprise I found that hotels and condos here are not more expensive than the rest of Playa. The excessive supply of options has lowered the prices.
Food. The quality and prices of the restaurants have standardized at a very good level, don’t get deluded by the exterior appearance of a place like ‘Karen’s’ or ‘Pez Vela’ (simple and modest) and ‘Sur Steak House’ or ‘Ristorane Italiano’ (brand new and luxurious) they will offer you the same dishes with almost the same prices. It seems that the excessive competition in the place have pushed up the standards. If you don’t mind to spend 40 USD in a dinner, may I recommend you ‘Ristorane da Bruno’ (12th St. and 5th Av.) the Italian food here is just good, fucking unbelievable good. ‘Sur Steak House’ is another must (10th St. and 5th Av.) an Argentinian style restaurant. Those restaurants which didn’t arrive on time to the 5th Av. or cannot afford it have moved to the 10th Av. and they are very good and less expensive options. If you are travelling on a budget you will find plenty of options, from pizza shops, Subway spots, and traditional Mexican restaurants.
Sluts. Temperature heats up at the 5th from 6 pm, everybody wants to see and be seen. People come in hordes to have dinner, an ice cream, a coffee, to buy clothes, souvenirs, jewelry, a personalized handmade cigar, to smoke hookah, have a massage, buy a trip, etc. They walk down the street in a slow, lazy pace, getting sure they capture every detail of the place, and that everybody knows about their presence. Even the people staying at the expensive all-inclusive hotels come here, dropping the dinners, drinks and clubs they had paid for. By 8 pm there’s a peak, the street is crowded with tourists from all over the World; however, there is a pack that will bring your attention, an endless parade of hot girls getting ready for the night. Just take your dinner in one of the outside tables of any restaurant and enjoy the view. There are sad moments though, you will also see blonde women with stunning bodies, lustrous long hair and beautiful faces, but whose beauty has been completely ruined by horrendous and grotesque sleeve and leg tattoos. I almost cried.

Continued...

Calle 12 (12th Street) –The Clubs.
All the clubs are located on Calle 12, you don’t have options ‘cause you ain’t need no options.
Before I give you a description of the clubs I went (check out the glorious map I made for you, guys) you have to take into account the following rules:
Unless you are going to ‘Coco Bongo’ or ‘Salsanera’, don’t you show up before 11:30 –the places are semi empty before that hour.
Aside from four options, don’t you buy drinks (tequila, whiskey, rum, vodka, etc.) only buy bottled beer -They are pure shit.
Drink costs are standardized: MXN 50 for a beer; MXN 100 for any other drink.
The ‘dress code’ is extremely relaxed; a nice polo, khakis, and loafers are perfectly fine.
Don’t you try to take a girl to the beach or to a closed street to bang her.

Mandala. It’s a beautifully Hindu style decorated open air club. At the head of the dancing court a 7 ft statue of Durga, the supreme Hindu goddess, ‘The Inaccessible’, reigns. The environment is extraordinary and, although it sells itself as ‘exclusive’, the place is completely crowded. Mandala is, by far, the hottest club in town right now. It’s attendance is about 90% foreign and 10% Mexican. The name of the game here is wolf pack status. If you don’t show up in a group of at least four people to claim your space, you are going to get lost among the crowd. The ratio is pretty decent, about 5/4. Cover: USD 40, yeah, not cheap.

La Vaquita (‘The Little Cow’). It’s an open air club with the second highest attendance just behind Mandala. Decoration is fine, but simple. The environment takes a little time to heat up, but around 11:30 is great. The attendance in this club swings. Before 12:30 has a slight Mexican majority but then it turns gringo. The ratio here is really good, about 7/5. Cover: MXN 100.

Tribeca. Do you want to try a quick move with the first girl of the night? Are you going solo or with just one partner? Do you just want to warm up the night before jumping into another club? Then you should go to Tribeca, it’s a small, open air, very simple club that constantly gets crowded. It’s the place to either start or finish the night. Attendance swings. Popular among packers. Very good ratio: 5/4. No cover, except on Saturdays: MXN 150.

El Bar Abolengo (The Upper Class Bar). Do you want to enjoy a decent drink in a brand new and nicely decorated big bar? Then go to Abolengo, a big open air attractive bar. This is the upper scale place of the site, and although it doesn’t have a dancing court, the environment is so good that people dance in the aisles or around the sofas. Very good ratio, although it’s a place to go in a group. No cover.

Salsanera (Salseando in the map, sorry, my fault!). Do you know the basic steps of Salsa and want to try your luck with either a Mexican or with a nice European girl? Then go to Salsanera, an open air Salsa ballroom. The amenities begin with a free Salsa class from 9:30 to 10:30. Now, you are not going to learn to dance Salsa in one hour, so this is basically a wingman class, your opportunity to start contact with one incautious European girl. After that, the music opens. The environment is very animated and the girls are friendly and accessible. The drinks are decent. On Saturday a Cuban group plays live. A very tight ratio of 11/10. The attendance is 60% Mexican; 30%, South American; and 10%, Europeans. Americans? Near zero. Big problem with this place is that it has a low attendance from Monday to Thursday. Maybe it was that this summer was not good for Playa (more below) or that this is the norm. No cover except on Saturdays: MXN 150 which includes a beer.

Tabú (Taboo). This was supposed to be a very popular club. Today, it’s closed and apparently the site is going to be demolished.

Mezcallina and the Hidden Bar. These two contiguous little and crowded bars are across the street from La Vaquita. They basically work as warming places. People start drinking here before going to the clubs. A sausage fest, don’t you waste your time.

Coco Bongo. The junior version of the ultra-famous Cancún Club. The main attraction here is the performance of an impressive show featuring impersonators of Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga, among others, which according to the reviews ‘puts Vegas to shame’. The tickets for Coco Bongo are sold everywhere. Even the all-inclusive hotels provide them along with transportation. The place opens at 10:45, but by that moment there is a large line of at least 200 people waiting to get into the place. Most of the attendance are couples and groups. Cover: USD 70. I didn’t get there, cannot tell you about it.

Palazzo. Along with Coco Bongo, the only walled club in the street. It seems very popular. I didn’t get there, cannot tell you about it. No cover.

The Blue Parrot. Anybody here has any information about what is happening with this place? It’s basically a big garden with a small pool, a large bar and sound equipment. The Parrot is among the pioneer clubs and hotels that helped to build Playa; but now the place is almost empty! It advertises a bikini contest every Wednesday night. I couldn’t go that day, so I can’t tell.

Coco Maya. Same as above.

Finally, there are police cars permanently parked in the street and there are agents making rounds in the beach. It seems that the number of people leaving the clubs to go banging to the beach at 3:00 am or behind an ATM was getting out of control and now it’s not allowed. Don’t you try it! And a very final note. There is a Señor Frogg’s next to the ferry station. Don’t you, I repeat, don’t you waste your time and money.

Plagues. Six plagues are affecting Playa right now. One is due to nature; the other five, to human activity.
Sargasso (aka seaweed). It’s been almost 4 months that all the Mayan Riviera has been affected by this macroscopic, multicellular, marine algae that lives near the seabed. It’s not toxic, nor dangerous, but it’s certainly a bitch. The algae comes to the shore and the basic effects are that the water turns a little brown and it also smells, also at night (like rotten fish). If you are on the beach all you have to do is walk into the sea about 10 yards and the problem is solved. Playa and Tulum are very affected; while Akumal and Cancun have the problem under control. People blame seaweed for the very bad summer season.
Starbucks. All of a sudden, overnight, tens of Starbucks showed up in Playa, just in the 5th Av. you find ten. I bet Playa is the only place on Earth you can find a Starbucks open at 2 am. There are more Starbucks coming.
Hagen Dasz. Same as above.
Aldo’s (Italian version of Hagen Dasz). Same as above.
Zen fish treatment shops. For USD 15 you can have your feet placed in a kind of fishbowl where tens of carnivore little exotic Brazilian fishes (or they were Asians?) are going to byte your feet, removing all your diseases and relieving your stress. There are everywhere.
Construction. There is a construction rush in town, also for apartments for tourists. Whole blocks are being bought and developed. My guess is that the bubble is about to pop, when this happens this will take accommodation prices lower.

Questions?

Great information and I need time to go through, but lock down places like Mandala, Tribeca, and La Vaquita and you will never pay a cover or wait in line ever. They will actually send a guy down the street to pull me into their club in order to avoid having me go into another club. They aren't making a ton of money off of all of those backpackers. I've gotten bangs from both Tribeca and La Vaquita. I've never gotten more than a makeout from Mandala, but Mandala is the place where I came up with a strategy, so if I start spending more time there, I should do better. Tribeca also has ten hotel rooms above it, so logistics may be really good there.

I think the salsa club is called "Salsanera," and I agree with your description of it. You might want to correct that. That map is unreal. Around the corner of 10th Avenue and 12th Street, headed toward Starbucks, there is a bar/restaurant called La Jarra which stays open late. Not a great place, but it sometimes has live bands and it you need a venue change, it is there. The place between Palazzo and the taco shop used to be called Pura Vida. It was really popular and mostly Argentines went there. I don't know what happened to it.

Across the street from Mandala is Diablito Cha Cha Cha. I've never had any success in that place, although the guy working the door is convinced that I'm Eminem.

Yes, there are other places as you said, I just wanted to focus on 12th Street where plenty of pussy is available. There is also an Sports Bar on 5th Av with Mexican hostess (I don't remember its name) but it looked crazy after 12:00 am.

Tequila Barrel is one sports bar on 5th. I've never gotten more than a number from the girls working there.

Yeah, 3 bangs, one of them was really, really weird. Crazy stories? I was impressed by the environment of the 12th St from 12:00, it's a environment of total permissiveness. You feel everything is possible that every body are there just to fuck and get drunk and drugged.

By the way, I forgot to post something in the data sheet. The last trend among American girls is to celebrate bachelorette parties in Playa. They show up wearing tight shorts, a top, a kind of veil, high heels and a white or red thong over the shorts… Yes, over the shorts. Another trend was to show up with shorts and a blouse just to, in the heat of the night, get rid of the clothes and dance wearing a bikini. It seems that the days where American girls showed up in a club wearing only a summer dress, sandals and no underwear are gone. Can we call it a back to morality principles?

Were the girls Mexican or foreign? Locals or tourists? All my notches there were from Mexican locals (although originally from other parts of Mexico).

All of them Mexicans. One from Monterrey (I felt guilty, this girl was really drunk) and two from Mexico City. One from Tribeca, one from Salsanera and one from Akumal beach day game. I was just inches away to bed a stunning Swedish I met at Salsanera, but she got into the place with her whole family! I got very anxious and she didn't want to look slutty in front of her parents, sister and brother. Believe me, it still hurts!

The Mexican girls on vacation are the most difficult ones for me there. Maybe I just went during the wrong weeks or approached the wrong girls. The Mexican girls who live there aren't too bad. I could see Salsanera working for me, especially since dancing is one of my best skills and the place has a pretty good set-up. I think I went there twice and didn't really see any quality girls. I don't know if this has ever been posted on the forum, but I think you need to get to the clubs really early, like 10:00 or something. I was getting there like 1:00 or 2:00 and it seemed like most of the girls were already with guys.

Mmm… I guess you were on a bad season. OK, let’s dissect this.
As a rule, it’s difficult to find a -25 y. o. girl in a salsa ballroom in Mexico. Most of the attendance are grown people, mostly people in their late 20s and 30s.
Second. Mexican girls in places like Playa get flattered/intimidated by a foreigner. Flattered, because a foreign man is interested in them, intimidated because they have a hard time understanding English, and because they assume you are for a quick bang.
Now, when dealing with a Mexican girl, try those who are in pairs. Why? Big chances are they are +25 and ‘independent’ career women. They are not as independent (and hostiles) as American career women, actually I bet you they live with their parents, but they are very open for a quick anonymous bang with a gringo.
If you see a group of nice young Mexican girls partying it’s sure that they are ‘fresas’ (strawberries). This word is given in Mexico for upper middle class young girls with snob attitudes. Do you remember the MTV cartoon ‘Daria’? Do you remember ‘Quinn’, Daria’s sister, well, that’s a ‘fresa’ girl in Mexico. Problem with these girls is that they have vacations with their parents and they cannot just get out for a bang. Even though, once you crack the shield anything is possible.

Not in the case of Playa. Never show up before 11:30. The first day I was there I went to the clubs at 10:30, and they were semi empty, dead, not even nice girls. Since my apartment was just 3 blocs away and I didn't want to start drinking. I went back to my place, did some internet and went back one hour later and the view was different. Now, 1 am o 2 am are a little late.

Even though, once you crack the shield anything is possible.[/quote]

First, I have some additional Playa data that I'll send you via P.M. I have already sent it to a few other forum members. I can't post it here. Second, I agree with you on the age thing in salsa clubs. Salsa clubs in many places attract an older crowd. Third, I just don't know. I'm an obvious foreigner until I open my mouth then girls either think I'm Mexican or get really confused. A lot of times during a conversation they will say, "Gracias por ser mexicano." I'm in no way Mexican. I think a lot of times there are Mexican girls in Playa who are looking for foreigners s nd are giving me tons of indicators or interest, but as soon as I open my mouth their whole demeanor changes. It doesn't happen to me anywhere else. I agree with the part about girls being there with their families. There was one really young D.F. girl ( I would have to check her I.d.) who was there with her family and who had to ask permission to go out who kept calling me, but I was with other girls.

Awesome post man. I've asked a few other guys here but would like your opinion too....if I have to stay at one of the all-inclusive resorts, what do you suggest I do if I find a girl to bang? Where to bang her if I can't bring her back to my all inclusive hotel?

^^^ I booked an all inclusive as well for sept but never thought about this problem. I'm curious to the issues I might have when bringing back girls.

Hell yes! Spent a few days in PDC back 2012, love that place. So much cool shit in the Riviera Maya region. I'm planning to spend a few months there once I have my business off the ground.

@Slubu. Don't take them to the beach. I did, got caught by security mid-bang, and had to pay $200 to keep him from calling the cops.

You can get a cheap hotel room that's still nice enough for under $75 a night near the clubs. I'd just get a room ahead of time because it's almost guaranteed you will get laid. I was there solo for two nights and got laid both times.

OK, for all of you, guys, who have booked an all-inclusive hotel in Playa and wonder about the logistics of bringing a girl to your place, I have the following comments.
First. If you have booked an all-inclusive hotel and this place is adult only be sure to squeeze all the wingman activities that you already paid for. What do I mean? As a rule adult-only all-inclusive hotels in the Mayan Riviera have a happy hour (6:00 to 7:00 pm) which includes free Salsa classes. Again, this is a chance to meet girls, also because during the class men are asked to switch partners every three minutes, so you end up meeting a lot of girls in a short period of time. Other intercative activity comes during meals, the restaurants in this places have large tables and the host in the door always ask you if you mind to share your table. If you say ‘no’ she will give you a sit siding with a woman, and the next woman to get into the place will be sit next to you and so on. They are your wingman. These places also have private clubs playing dance-music, so chances are you can end up banging the girl next door, literally.
Now, about bringing an ‘exterior’ girl to your place, I am going to tell you about my own experience. Years ago I went to the Club Med at Cancun. I met a girl in the beach and invited her that evening to my place (she was married). Since the Med is an all-inclusive the access is strictly controlled. So, I went to the front desk and told the hostess that a person was going to visit me for two hours so they could authorize her getting in. She first said ‘yes’, but as soon as I turned back and walked 5 steps. She went after me, stopped me and said:
-Sir, I am afraid you will have to buy me something, so I could authorize it, you know, it’s dinner time.
-We are not dinning here.
-I am afraid there’s no option.
-What do you mean?
-You will have to buy me a drinks booklet worth of MXN 400.
So, this the trick, supposedly all-inclusive hotels include absolutely everything you want to consume… With exceptions, it can be the non-beer drinks, it can be imported drinks, etc. So, if I remember well, those guys were cashing me MXN 790 every day for everything I wanted to have, but drinks. I you wanted to have a beer, a tequila, a whiskey you had to buy a booklet of credits to be used there. The booklet was not refundable, that is, they will not give you back the money of the chips you didn’t use. A beer was worth 20 credits those days; a tequila, 30; a screwdriver, 40; and so on. The cheapest booklet had 300 credits, so, picture the scene. Basically, I guess you can bring the bitch to your place, but you will have to pay for about 50% of what they cash you every night. If you are paying USD 150 a night, they will cash you USD 75. You have no option, but to go to the front desk and ask something like this: ‘Hey, I am going to pick up a friend of mine tonight at the 5th, and then she is going to visit me, is there any problem -she will be only two hours?’ Now, as a Mexican I recommend you to ask directly the question to the bell boy. He can give you a better picture of how you can solve the problem.
Another option is to book a room in a Motel. There’s a mammoth motel in the highway just across the street from the main access to Playa. They cash you MXN 300 (about USD 18) for 4 hours. You don’t need more than 4 hours to bang a drunk bitch, do you? Some memories are coming, I guess I spotted two small motels just on the 5th Avenue, but I don’t remember well the location.
Another option. Keep it easy -Ask a taxi driver! If you have booked an all-inclusive that means that you will be located in the North End of Playa. To go to the 5ta. Avenida you will have to either ask a taxi or drive the car you rented. Remember: It doesn’t take more than 5 minutes! Ask a taxi driver to take you to the nearest and cheapest motel once you got the bitch. Even better, plan in advance. If you are walking the 5ta Avenida you will find a taxi driver in every corner, most of them speak basic English. Ask them directly about a motel and what the price is for taking you at the motel at 2 am. Then tip him with a dollar bill.
Final option. It can happen that the bitch is staying at an apartment, so there you have no problem.

UPDATE: So, guys, just asked my contacts and they told me that there are two options for a motel:
Motel El Rumayor, next to the Chedraui (Mexican version of Wal-Mart).
Motel Chocolate.

I hope you appreciate my efforts and tell me about your succesful banging once you come back.

This report is on point!

Having tripped it to PDC three times now, it's crazy to see how the place grows each time I go. Back in 2007, I stayed in a wood and mud brick shack by the pier. Blue Parrot was pretty much the only big venue. Definitely lost a bit of the old charm, but I guess you can party more now in the South Beach style evolution. And the map that Luvianka put up is golden. Put yourself up in an AirBnB close to where the action is and you'll be pulling back within a minute walk. I would also add La Santanera (especially the top floor) to the list. Found the place to have a more open vibe for talking, listening to chill music, and taking women from bar or dance floor to discrete couches. Hostel Che rooftop has a ton of amazing Argentinian girls, but wasn't really my scene and the Argos are hard to figure out. You'll come across various bars that will have ladies nights, easy picking, but not always best quality.

Overall, PDC was quiet when I went in May. Coco Maya was completely dead, Mandala would only get packed with Israeli kids after midnight, Blue Parrot had bad ratios. I met at least four or five girls who were paid by the clubs/bars to just show up, lead dudes on, drink some free drinks, and clock out at 2am. La Vaquita was always bumping, the Mexican girls were super easy to dance, make out with, more difficult to escalate. The Israelis stick together and many of them weren't the best looking, judging by my past trip to Tel Aviv. I'd avoid unless they hook. The Argentinians were easily the best looking, but just difficult to figure out, flaky, and they seemed to prefer their own social circles. Italian girls were in a similar boat. Other free-spirit Europeans, usually backpacking, were the easiest targets, 'finding themselves out' one cock at a time. Any random gringas, just avoid.

After five straight nights of going hard in that area until 5-6am, I had to change locations to the 'Little Italy' part of Playa for calmer surroundings. Got myself a bike and met some really cool expats just living and working there. After a week you'll start to realize how small the place is and see the same people at bars, cafes, walking the streets. Get a car, see the pyramids and awesome beaches. I like how PDC is an international spot and since it's tourist based, fresh pussy flows through. You'll get by on English fine, but knowing Spanish will make it so much sweeter.

Santanera changed locations last year. If you look at the map, it is now on the corner of 10th Street and 5th Avenue, across the street from Sur and on the other end of the block where "Ristorante Italiano" appears on the map. I never really spent much time there, don't really have the place on lock, and have had zero success there. I prefer Tribeca, Mandala, and La Vaquita. La Vaquita tends to stay open later than both Tribeca and Mandala. I can't agree with you on the "any random gringas just avoid" part. If you speak Spanish, they see extra value in you and are easier to get than at home.

What would be considered the best time to go to Playa Del Carmen?

Would prefer that it's not crazy busy or with too families, which I guess would be around Christmas/New Years?
