Starbucks is now serving alcohol at 70 locations

Starbucks is turning baristas into bartenders by adding booze to the menu at a growing number of coffee shops around the country.

Starbucks is serving beer and wine at five more locations this week, bringing the total to 70 nationwide. The company is expanding the menu to include booze at coffee shops in New York City, Denver, Miami, the Orlando suburbs and northern California.

Starbucks (SBUX) said it will start serving booze on Wednesday in Williamsburg, a Brooklyn neighborhood with no shortage of bars. The company was already serving alcohol at one other location in New York City, at Macy's in Manhattan.

This week's ramp-up is occurring in places where the alcohol menu has already taken hold. This will be the sixth coffee shop in Denver to serve alcohol, the ninth in northern California (including four in San Francisco,) the fifth in greater Orlando and the second in Miami.

Starbucks has been testing its "evening program" for years, starting in Seattle in 2010. Within five years from now, the company hopes to have beer and wine on the menu at 2,000 of its 12,000 coffee shops in America.

The company's online menu offers a selection of wines, including Malbec, pinot noir, pinot gris and Prosecco. "Ask your barista about our current selection of curated craft beers," reads the menu.

The drinks are served alongside dishes that are not the usual Starbucks fare. Small plates include truffle mac & cheese, chicken skewers, artichoke & goat cheese flatbread, meat balls with tomato basil sauce, bacon-wrapped dates, a cheese plate and truffle popcorn.

Thought the game implications for this were interesting. Is this the perfect first date location? Coffee date going well? "Hey, let's grab a bottle of wine". I would definitely take advantage of this if I was in the states. Will you guys be utilizing this?

I go to a bar or lounge for the music, the sexual escalation aspect of it (dim lights), and the unique aspects that make a bar interesting + socialization with the people and the bartenders (owning the place). So no, will pass.

In France in Mcdonald they serve beer, won't see myself getting any chick there anyway unless its 4 am.

They might be biting off more than they can chew. Running a bar where you have to learn to manage a wide variety of new factors (i.e. drunk people) is a far cry from running a coffee shop. I have a tough time seeing this working, but I'm sure el mechanico could figure out a way to take advantage of it.

I don't see myself ordering an Oldfashioned at this place but lions prey where antelopes go to drink.

They are dumb if they are only doing beer and wine. They should be adding hard liquor to some of their coffee drinks like "frappacino with vodka" or whatnot.

Bars and clubs are now obselete.
Starbucks has now become the number one place to take a white girl on a date and smash the same night.

This is very disappointing.

I don't take girls to Starbucks for dates. Starbucks (and coffee shops in general) is where I occasionally go on weekends to relax, read, and have a hot drink. If this catches on (which it may very well do, especially somewhere like the UK where there is a huge drinking culture) then this is going to alienate those people who don't want to be surrounded by obnoxious drunk people trying to talk to you and start fights - at a fucking Starbucks. They can go to a bar for that for fuck sake.

I really don't think that will be the environment. In my imagination, it'll have a wine bar feel, with chill music and good lighting. That wouldn't set the stage for the local fraternity to start making the Starbucks their new pregame spot.

Maybe they hope that drunk people will be less aware of how outrageously expensive their coffee is.

I was thinking more or less the same thing in regards to the UK.

I don't think there are any game advantages to this, problem is that given Starbucks current success I can't see them failing here, they probably have a good idea on how to implement it and it will no doubt go down well with the white girl fan base. And as a result, us as guys, will unfortunately follow.

This is them trying to try to become more "24 hours." To make better use of the fact that they have these locations already established. Close the shop at 3:00am, clean the puke, and reopen up at 5:30 in the morning. However, it will make starbucks a little more trashy. I can imagine baristas serving alcohol to minors because they were "friends."

Still don't see this being popular, pass.

Give me a classic semi/rough dive bar with a few pool tables and good music any day of the week.

All bitches love that shit.

They have found a niche and will exploit it.

Clubs in my area are generally for the 19 - 25 crowd, some clubs cater to the over 35 crowd. Many girls in the 25 to 35 age range don't like going to clubs.

A lot of people socialize at Starbucks, neighbourhood bars are dying and they will fill that void.

Hold up, guys....I've achieved several bangs out of Starbucks (some same day) running day game. There's 8's and the occasional 9 running in and out of these stores all day for their caffeine fix. I guarantee that with the advent of the alcohol stores it will only get better. It'll probably be more like a hotel bar setting but anytime you have attractive women, good atmosphere, and booze you're going to see action. I see hotter women in Starbucks then most bars....My 2 cents.

Or, women will be running out of these places to get away from all the "creepy guys" hitting on them in the coffee shop. Only a matter of time before the PUA clowns starting showing up here.

sorry but the last place I want to drink is surrounded by a bunch of people on laptops, and the rando's sorting through all of the loose pieces of paper and mail in their purses.

Haha...It's actually not that bad. It just gets a more laid back "hotel bar" vibe. I guess if you're already talking to a girl in there, you could go up to the counter and grab a couple beers to start moving the conversation into a more "escalated" environment. To each his own. I'll see what I can pull with the new booze scene in there and report back.

And I just can't see this turning into a PUA hangout. Haha! It would be interesting to watch though. Indirect appriach goes well here.

I don't know about cafes back in the states. But it's pretty common over in Asia for cafes to serve alcohol as well.

There's one really popular cafe in my town that's open till about 11:30 or so, it's still mostly a place where hot young 20 somethings go but when it's later they're all sipping on a beer or some kinda cocktail.

Starbucks, while I am doing everything I can to give them 0 business, does have locations that I can remember as being somewhat chilled and I wouldn't mind sipping on a beer with some chick at. The majority though, no no way, couldn't be any more generic and boring.

There's a wine Starbucks near where I work. They start serving at 4 PM. I went there after work one day and the vibe really was the same as any other Starbucks.

I don't see anything groundbreaking or game changing coming out of this. Maybe if you're new to day game like I am, a wine Starbucks wouldn't be a bad place to start. You can have a little overpriced glass of vino while you ask her technical questions about the laptop that she's using.
