Massive Explosion in Tianjin

It's already been posted CJ_W.

That is insane, he thought he was at a safe distance and then instantly his life is over. Horrible.

Curious to see what a satellite estimates the blast radius is.

I mean 21 tons of TNT ? Jesus.

Ball park numbers:
1 mole of TNT ~ 250g
1mole of TNT exploding gives ~ 7 moles of gas.
1 mole of gas ~ 22.4 liters

so 250 g of TNT detonating gives ~ 150 liters of gas.
However the gas is not at room temperature (~300 k) but 2000K.
Gas expands ~ 7x when heated from 300 K to 2000 K.

So when 250g (1/4kg) of TNT is detonated, it creates a fireball ~ 1000 liters in size, or 1 cubic meter.

The fireball in the video is ~300m in diameter, or 150m radius.
This means the volume of the fireball is ~14 million cubic meters.

This means ~3000 tons of TNT would be required to make this fireball.

If the estimated diamter of the fireball is reduced to 150m, the volume of course goes down by a factor of 8.
This would still mean an estimated 300 tons would be required.

It certainly seems the chinese estimate of 20 tons of TNT seems on the light side!

That's only if the explosion was actually TNT, right? If it was gas or oil (or some other chemical) the resulting huge fireball might have only produced the equivalent force of 20 tons.

The guy that filmed this one is dead. Apparently he was live-streaming through WeChat.

Play the video at .25x speed and you can see the fences and buildings in front of him get torn apart by the shock-wave.

I remember reading something about concussive blasts from IEDs, a simple artillery shell IED has a shockwave that can liquify the internal organs of a person standing pretty far. This is why so many soldiers end up with traumatic brain injuries. They are wearing enough gear to protect their body from some blasts but their brain just gets mushed.

Now imagine something several thousand times that which throws fences and buildings into the air like they're made of paper. Dude had no chance at all. He probably didn't even feel it though.

RIP the brave cameraman... that was shocking to watch, especially at 0.25x speed where you can see the explosion advancing towards him [Image: sad.gif]

This calls for some shockwave porn, to illustrate the sheer power of the forces involved. Granted, this is from nukes so we're speaking orders of magnitude worse than what occurred in Tianjin, but it illustrates the point.

This is a tiny one: cannon-fired shell with a yield of 15kt. By comparison, the Tsar Bomba had a yield of 50,000kt ![Image: youtheman.gif])

A good compilation of various blasts. Some are boring but others are worth watching, especially the first one, the ship at 5:00, and the cannon at 7:00.

Don't fuck with math!
