Non-event? Lawyering and DMCAs? Go to TPB, the ashleymadison torrent has over 1k seeds and it's never going down. Over 5k seeds on kat.cr.

Of course only men (mostly) are being fucked by this. Women will get a pass - we'll be seeing this becoming common on websites that promote adultery in marriage.

You couldn't be any more correct in this. SNP Michelle Thompson's email was found in the database, and already the photo caption is:

"Victim: Married Edinburgh MP Michelle Thomson, pictured with Nicola Sturgeon ahead of the May election, said her identity was 'harvested' by hackers who falsely suggested she was an Ashley Madison member"

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-...z3jPBYY3CY

BTW If you are a guy (or know a guy) who needs excuses to deflect attention and/or claim it wasn't you, the Daily Mail did all the necessary research for you (trying to give a pass to SNP Thompson). It is a perfect balance of distracting facts, slanted frame, and passive voice. The highlights:

SNP MP finds her name on Ashley Madison list: Married politician is horrified after her email address is published by hackers in massive data file revealing 37 million users of adultery website
-Ashley Madison has 37m members around the world including 1.2m Brits
-Includes 124 civil servants, 92 MOD staff and 56 NHS workers
-Email address can be used without verification leading to malicious cases
-Michelle Thomson, the MP for Edinburgh West, says she is victim of smear
-Files include names, addresses, phone numbers and credit card details
-Data dump also has their sexual fantasies, ideal partner and profile photo
-Owners describe hack as 'act of criminality' and have called in the FBI

I've been hearing word that over 15,000 people with government email accounts signed up. A federal judge was also mentioned. Unverified at this point.

It was a state court judge in Philadelphia who was outed.

Ok so let's parse this. I'm intimately familiar with the database dumps and the credit card transaction files.

1. So let's say you find me and my home address in the credit card auth information, you then can see my email address that I used on the site, this is the only confirmable information in the whole breach - everything else (in the db's) was not confirmed and could be faked as a result.
2. if you then take my email address and query one of the db's you can find my userid.
3. with my userid you can access all kinds of other, non verifiable information about my like my dob, etc. you can also see what my profile said and my preferences.
4. you CANNOT correlate my userid or membership number with other users.
5. you CANNOT see private messages, or who you might've contacted or who contacted you.
6. one of the db's will tell you if you had an image, public or private - but the entry isn't a BLOB it's a INT which means its a 0 or 1 in other words a yes/no telling you if the images existed.
7. there are some opportunities to set relational keys between the db's to make this parsing easier but the result is the same.

So what are you going to do with this information? Call my wife? My boss? There is plenty of plausible deniability and frankly what do you gain from this? just taking pleasure in the pain of others?

The specter of people finding out who fucked who simply isn't there, there is no way to tell from the released data. Given the amount of technical knowledge necessary to do this and the time involved why would anyone bother? Most users (I hope) had throwaway email addresses so the chance of being outed that way should be low.

In any case I think this will blow over with not much ado. Maybe some celebs or politicos will be outed, ho-hum. Who gains by going after joe-blow?

People may have the data sets, but unless the write an interface to search the data and then host in an offshore data haven (which = $$$) they cannot make it publicly accessible - they will get it with takedowns, as many have already. The masses will never see this data. The FBI and Interpol is so all over this, it will be hard to deal with. Might be something on TOR/Onion at some point...

They destroy Ashley Madison either way due to the optics. I suspect it isn't sadism per se, but someone's got a grudge against the site for whatever reason....and I can imagine numerous possible reasons.

IMHO it just makes people smarter. Burner card, fake address, burner email. Given that its men being outed (and dropping like flies) the few guys left with anything decent to offer should be slaying it on AM now, because the broads that were putting out on AM we're already proficient at going ghost/anon and have no info to divulge to get an account.

You called other forum members idiots for opposing your view that this would be a non-event.

Despite your rambling about DMCA, lawyers and what you personally found in the initial data dump, it has already claimed a few public figures and sites have been created to provide a search interface for the general public.

Meantime, a second release has been made; this time twice the size of the first: http://www.wired.com/2015/08/ashley-madi...atch-data/

Neo: the data is being released in parts. You'll probably need to wait for a few weeks if you're looking for definitive information.

No I really didn't, there is a bit of nuance in my post but hey sometimes subtlety is lost. Not really sure what the beef is, but I've provided a fuck ton of useful information for those being deluged with fear, uncertainty and doubt.

Again I think this will basically amount to: not very much at all. Thats my opinion. Downloading the second tranche right now. Lets see what might be in there.

Only time will tell.

Get a burner email and a burner phone, or even better Google Voice or similar. For the love of god, do not give any traceable information, to AM or to a potential date. You think I'm paranoid? I've read stories of guys wives finding a credit card charge to ADL Media and doing a little googling, and then they're busted. The guy tries to claim he didn't do it, and Ashley Madison delivers a certified letter to the dude's house with printouts of his profile, credit card numbers, every picture he put on the site. NEVER use your real credit card, real name, real email, or real phone number.

Not to blow my own horn, but I did document this. AM clearly deleted NOTHING, even if you paid them, my only wish is that I had been saying this louder, longer.

And that I'd figured this out years ago so I could've taken my own advice.

I don't know about other countries, but in my particular case, I'm already getting divorced (for very ironic reasons), and in any case it's a no-fault state. My attorney told me that I can't introduce the evidence I have because it wasn't properly obtained, and in any case in my state, the judges don't want to hear about it. Unless it pertains to my ability to parent, it's not only a non-issue, I will more likely get in trouble for my evidence collection than she will for her bad behavior. So I'm guessing it's the same in this case. If you possess the evidence, you can't use it in court, and if you're in a no-fault state, the judge likely doesn't want to hear it anyway.

However, I could see this stuff being used for background checks on sites like "Don't Date Him Girl". You want a dating site where women would pay for service? Background check sites for "marriage material" men.

Also for anyone foolish enough to sign up with a .mil or .gov domain email address, well, they're likely going to be in some trouble and at the least will have some explaining to do. I honestly doubt the military will want to comb through this and figure out who did what, but I could certainly see security clearances being dinged, and that can be very career-limiting in itself.

Probably the worst thing that could happen is you could re-publish the site but as publicly accessible and mine-able data, but again, you'd have to do that in a friendly jurisdiction, and all that takes money.

The limiting factor is that the data gets stale, with each passing day, this stuff becomes more of a youthful indiscretion and less of an "oh shit". Look at Cattle Rustler's post. Nothing focuses the mind like an angry spouse calling your phone.

I pretty much agree with ThrustMaster but I also expect that there will be serious fallout for some people.

This has happened before but to individuals. There was a federal court judge here (the guy who presided over the Joe Nacchio insider trading case) who was exposed for having a profile on AFF, some chick recognized him and published his profile and some emails he sent. He's not a federal judge anymore. So this data dump is basically that but for maybe a hundred people. Also I expect that this will trigger a few divorces and sadly, a few suicides.

There will very likely be a class action lawsuit. I don't know how the Canadian laws work, but I'm 100% certain someone is already working on that angle. Still, what do you get from signing onto the lawsuit? Your $20 back because they didn't actually delete your data? Maybe another couple hundred bucks for the embarrassment? As part of the lawsuit you'll have to go on public record admitting you actually signed up, so you're signing yourself up for further public exposure. Let's face it, AM probably deserved to be sued long ago. Their business practices have always been scummy. Now we have proof. So what? If some good comes of this, the good is: men need to think with their big heads more and consider their actions more carefully.

Well just looked at the 20gb leak. It's all source code and design docs (to AM) from what I can tell. No personal user data outside of the CEO's personal email archive - and that file is corrupted.

Damn they released IP (intellectual property) now - this is gunna get good - I sense this will bring a lot more big $$ into this witch hunt (for the crackers).

This might've been a BIG mistake by the crackers. These guys have big rocks - hubris even. Pride goeth before the fall, they may be about to find out just how long the arm of the law is. Once big money is involved (software and IP is big $$), all bets are off.

Lets see.

It has been claimed that Ashley Madison used fakes to get more money out of men, now there is proof.

Here is a statistic of the accounts they created:

So what's with all of this hubbub about the email and CC leak then if the torrents don't contain any personally identifiable data?

I've never signed up for AM, but I'll sure as hell sign up for the lawsuit. Even if it's the cost of a membership (probably more due to publicity) that's free money.
If they need verification I just give them an email off the list.

My comment was about the second 20gb file, the first leak 9.6gb does contain credit card information but only in CSV files (fully greppable) but the DB dumps don't unless you used actual information in your profile.
