Survival TV Show: Alone

No joke, I don't think I'd be able to stick around with freaking bears and cougars all over the place... not to mention the lack of survivalist skills. Gotta give every one of these guys some major props.

I could only do it if I had absolutely no other choice. It could not be for television, it could not be to prove something to myself, and it could not be my choice in the matter. It would have to be a forced situation like running for my life, prison escape or the fall of civilization. If I was on that island with a satellite phone that could end my suffering I would not make it 48 hours before I hit speed dial.

Just watched the first episode. I don't know how they cleared this with insurance but its an excellent show. Even getting just a basic fire going is taking major effort, incredibly tough environment.

They win $500k if they are the last one there. Thats like 7-8 years of wages working in the woods. I'd do it for sure.

You are a better outdoorsman than I ever will be. After taxes that is roughly 300-350 grand, I do not think I could last that long. The money is good but it is not just the wilderness, it is the animals in the wilderness as well. I simply do not think I could outlast those guys, some of them are experienced outdoorsmen unlike me. I have hunted, I have camped but I have never been in survival mode in the wood completely away from civilization for the long haul. If it was you against me ,Dr. Howard that money is yours because I would not be able to outlast you. I cannot even talk shit keyboard warrior style like I could outlast you because I know I could not.

Good point, that sort of thing was my job for a number of years so it could equally be a show like "Do this job job for 4 months straight with no breaks!" and I'm sure people that are familiar with it would say "sure I could do that"...like I would dread some sort of challenge where I had to drive a semi truck and trailer around an urban area for 500,000 if I didn't crash into anything...unless it was a beer truck

I watched the show as well and the guys who were "lucky" enough to be dropped off near the animals.... just amazing. The horror really comes through from the screen. Can't really imagine myself doing anything like that.

Not as hardcore, but still interesting is The Island with Bear Grylls. Just started watching season 2 with two teams (feminists criticized the first season for not being present) sorted by gender. Season 2 episode 2 ..... with 14 women being dropped off to an island, 05:43 mark we have our first tears on the boat when the situation starts to sink in.... http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2o2uu4

I got caught up on all episodes and must say that this is a really good show and am looking forward to the next episode, I predict that either Lucas or Alan will win the whole thing. Today I came across a couple of news articles about a guy on Vancouver Island who punched a cougar in the head after the wild cat picked up his pet dachshund and dragged it into the woods, then he got his shotgun and blasted the cat to death! These stories are fairly common so we can see that the story line of these guys being in wild environment isn't a bunch of BS made up by television producers, this is the real thing. Here's a link to the news story: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2015/07/07/...45668.html and an even better video interview, here: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/life...id25348752

I remeber reading about this one when I was younger http://www.canadiangeographic.ca/wildlif...attack.pdf again, northern vancouver island about some old man that was attacked by a cougar and then stabbed it to death with his pocket knife.

Episode 4 Spoilers:

By the end of the fourth episode, they are down to just five of the ten guys they started with. From the very beginning, a lot of the guys talk about really missing their family, but the truth is that grown men go on week long business trips all the time and do fine without their family. Obviously, the possibility of surviving for weeks and weeks and maybe months is very scary to them, because that means a lot of time away from their family.

Being away for a few days isn't what is making them miss family...it's more the not knowing when they will see them next and knowing that their own decision to try to win a lot of money is the only thing stopping them from seeing their family.

The reality seems to be that most of these guys won't last more than two weeks, just because of the conditions alone.

I suspect that there might be one or two that are able to achieve reliable fire, food and water sources and also construct a cabin that wild animals simply cannot access.

In fact, I'm a little surprised that no one has built a shelter out of logs yet that can be locked from the inside. I guess that's probably more work than they have time for in the first five days, but the first one to do that is probably going to be the winner, because there's no substitute for having a safe place to sleep without fear and store food.

My money is on Mitch and Sam at this point. Mitch earned a serious advantage during Episode 4 by figuring out a way to reliably and easily re-start fires. He also caught a large fish, which puts him way ahead of everyone else when it comes to gaining protein. So far, it seems like virtually everyone else is starving and subsisting on protein low rabbit food.

Sam on the other hand didn't get as much screen time in this episode, but he seems to have an ideal disposition. You can tell that he is realistic about his situation, but he doesn't seem to get overly emotional about it. He remains positive, but not in the overly excited sort of way that is going to fizzle out after too many nights of sleeping in the cold.

Good thing they did not pick women in this show or else it would be like this. Imagine if you were trying to survive and you run away from a caiman or lacked orientation skills.

This is incredible. This segment alone requires an article.

Just watched episode 5. Spoilers ahead.

14 days in by the end of the episode and down to four guys. Mitch made a strong showing by getting a functioning boat built, which significantly increases his range, food gathering potential and options for relocation.

Lucas still seems like a leader, but Sam has shown a level of emotional weakness that he stayed above in the first week. He's a young 22 year old married guy with a kid coming, so that factors in.

Alan, the older dude hasn't done much that makes him stand out, but he's remained steady and certainly seems to know what he is doing.

While I liked Sam's attitude up to this point, he seems to be softening. I think he might be the next to drop, even though he's my favourite.

Lucas and Mitch both have inventiveness to their advantage, but they are faced with old and steady Alan who seems like the type that might just not give up, no matter how tough it gets.

Definitely my favourite show this year. Has really been keeping my attention.

^^I think you confused Mitch and Lucas. Lucas is the one who built the boat, Mitch is the guy who caught a fish.

My pick for lasting longest is Lucas, for the simple reason that he seems to be the biggest loner out of the remaining contestants. Everyone else on the show has moped at least once about leaving their family, how much they miss them, and how they're fighting to justify their continued absence from their loved ones. Lucas has broken down as well, but his emotional outburst concerned not missing home but being disappointed in himself and fear of being a failure. For everyone else, the emotional pain is driving them away from the island and back to their loved one, for Lucas, the emotion is driving him to stick to it, because to leave would signify the failure he is so afraid of.

It has been 14 days, and I think all 4 guys have more or less managed to secure a semblance of stability in regards to food, fire, and shelter. So barring stochastic events like animal encounters that freak them out or injuries, it's gonna come down to who is giving up the least opportunity cost by continuing to stay. Based on the above, I think it's Lucas.

That's one thing that struck me as odd ...considering some other "survival" shows (obviously some have been shown to be suspect) I've noticed this the most in Alone which surprises me

I think the boat alone could be the power shifter towards a winner...the island across takes care of the predators which is a huge reason for some of the past guys leaving

I'd like to have a go. My background and skills could be put to some use and I have no family to whimper about. I'd love it. As long as I have a sharp pointy weapon for those animals that might consider me lunch.

I've survived plenty of dangerous wild places in the UK. Liverpool, London's poor areas, Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle at night are more dangerous than some cougars and bears walking around. [Image: lol.gif]

Both my brother and I have had wolf-dodging experiences before, but none so close that you could hear snarling. It sounded so surreal that I'm still not sure if the producers of the show added it in as sound effects. I can say without a doubt that having a similar experience by myself would easily put me over the edge as well. There's certain things you can prepare for, and some weigh too heavily on your psyche when by yourself. I'd either quit or start working feverishly on fortifications and weapons, fuck filming.

Lucas reminds me of my LT. He's intelligent and hard driven, but sustains himself with his own oddball humor. I put my money on him winning.

Agreed, I have never heard a wolf snarl, they just seem to 'haunt' like ghosts. You see them on the edge of the treeline or sort of over your shoulder for a second looking at you. They engage in a stare down until you look away and then the move/change vantage point. I think its because they look at a lone person in the woods as prey/curiosity vs. a threat...like dogs, they only snarl in standoffs

Compare that to black bears, black bears stomp, charge and make huffing noises when they think you are a threat...when they are just curious or want to eat you they are silent and just slowly move closer.

I'm glad I've never heard it before. I have had the terror of hearing cougars growl. My grandmother used to live on a mountain. I remember a particular event of waking up at night at a random time and hearing the lightest "pat-pat" noise outside a window. Nothing struck me as out of the ordinary, then a very loud "roar-snarl-roar-growl" happened from what sounded like the other side of the window frame. We'd see them often in her small driveway or hear them on the roof, but that was too personal.

I don't blame any of those guys who quit over the close calls with the bears either. Anyone who knows anything about bears realized that they don't know how hungry that bear is and a mother-cub pack is even more likely to be hungry. Black bear or not, it still has too high of a risk for you fitting into it's feeding category to keep its weight up.

I saw a youtube video (also posted on here?) with one of the participants and he said they were specifically not allowed to bring a water filtration device.

Bears are no joke either, what would worry me the most about running into a bear on that show is that they always come back until you kill them. We usually had no problem scaring bears away from our work camps but once they knew that they smelled bacon grease etc they would come back day after day and get chased off day after day until we left or they had a high caliber intervention.
