Hey, first post here for a long time lurker. Thought I’d dive straight in and write an up-to-date data sheet for the town where I was an exchange student for a year.
Overview
Known as “The Athens of the North”, Edinburgh is a beautiful, historic and very cultured city. The capital of Scotland, it is also very affluent in comparison to much of Scotland and similar sized cities in the North of England. This comparative affluence is also reflected in prices, although you will still find Edinburgh to be considerably kinder on the wallet than London.
A very international city, the cosmopolitan atmosphere is boosted by four universities, a significant number of EU migrants and large numbers of tourists. For those interested in chatting to a range of lovely ladies, this is all good news!
The Girls
Let’s cut to the chase. As mentioned above, there are three main groups of “non-local” girls, plus the indigenous Edinburghers. The good news is that there attractive girls to be found in each group, although the proportion of honeys varies wildly between these groups.
The Locals: Obesity and "chavvy" fashion are the Achilles heels of this group, particularly during the daytime. They will doll themselves up for a night on the town, but when the lights go up in the nightclub, prepare yourself for a shock. There are outliers; pretty, friendly girls who are a pleasure to be around, but I would estimate those to be about 10% of this group.
These girls can be bitchy, but are more receptive to daygame. They will have plenty options, but often from unambitious, unkempt Average Joes who have been hanging around them since high school. If you have your shit together these girls will dig you.
The Students: a very international and attractive group, but it can be difficult to penetrate (ooh er, missus) if you’re not a student. This is especially true of the (hot) posh English students, as they benefit from the constant attention of the floppy-haired Henry and Ruperts with whom they are familiar from the boarding school circuit. Much more interesting are the international students, many from Spain, France, Poland, the US and a ton from Asia. These girls are more open to approaches both in the day and at night time, and they tend to have fewer beta orbiters clogging up their inboxes. The Spanish and Eastern Europeans are often the most attractive. The Asians tend to be pretty dorky looking, although there are of course some beautiful girls in this group.
EU Migrants: despite the assertions of Nigel Farage, enfettered EU immigration has brought some benefits to the UK. Principally, the steady stream of Spanish and Eastern European dolly birds who come in search of work. There are loads of Spaniards, who tend to be a cut above the local girls. These girls are very open and fun in the day and night-time. Likewise the Eastern Europeans (mostly Poles), who are instantly identifiable by their long legs, swinging hips and flawless turnout. Find these girls going to and from work in the city centre clothing and coffee shops.
Tourists: much like any other tourist city, young ladies in a foreign land seeking some excitement will enjoyed be approached by a cool and confident guy. Look out for girls on The Royal Mile, near the castle or in the museums. Go on a one of the many “free ghost tours” starting on the Royal Mile and you will soon make friends.
Daygame
As mentioned above, there is a good variety of girls who will love being approached during the day. I have never had any harsh blowouts in Edinburgh daygame, as people in Britain tend to be very polite in the daytime. This is not always true in night venues, as I’ll outline later.
For students: hang around the main university campus and the main residential areas for students which are Marchmont and Newington.
For tourists: hang around the Royal Mile, the Grassmarket and Chambers Street area.
For locals: hang around the main CBD shopping streets – Princes Street and George Street.
For Europeans: focus on all of the above. An out of the way bonus location would be Leith Walk and Leith itself, which has a fairly big Polish population.
Nightgame
Again, we have different parts of town where you will find different types of girls, some more receptive than others.
George Street
This is the area for the wealthy and the wannabes, a place to see and be seen. Sadly it is also where you’ll find the highest number of hotties. Consequently competition is high, with well put together young professionals, plus Henry and Rupert flashing daddy’s credit card. Kissing a girl on the dancefloor in the clubs around here is pretty common, but one night stands are more unusual, due to social pressure as these girls are often out in a big group of university friends. Anyway, the clubs and bars of the George Street area:
Lulu – Trendy and pretty expensive. Hot girls but very open plan and not the biggest, so you can burn the venue pretty quickly – a pain in the rectum if you’ve just paid £8 to get in. Best on Tuesdays and weekends. Dress smartly
Opal Lounge – similar to Lulu except the venue is a bit more compartmentalised, with different sections and rooms. Decent music, hot girls. Best on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Garibaldi’s – Smaller, grimier and cheaper than the two listed above, this place has a good atmosphere, decent birds and a pole on the dancefloor. The downside is it can become a bit overcrowded on busy nights.
Suva – Trendy, expensive, hot girls and bigger club than Lulu and Opal. Better sized dancefloor which is away from the bar. Popular with a younger crowd (18-22)
Shanghai – Probably the poorer relative on George Street. Still fancies itself as an exclusive venue, but attracts a higher proportion of wannabes than the others. Quality of girls is lower than Suva, Lulu and Opal.
Why Not – big with the younger crowd and students. Hot girls and preppy boys. Expensive, but maybe slightly less so than Opal and Lulu.
Lola Lo – Fun atmosphere with a slightly older crowd – mid to late twenties. Nice layout with seating area and separate dancefloor. Girls not as hot as the bigger hitters on George Street
El Barrio – an outlier just off George Street in that it is unpretentious and caters to the less affluent, more down-to-earth international crowd. Plenty of hot Latinas and much cheaper than its swanky competitors on George Street.
Old Town
In the old town you will find a more fun and unpretentious vibe. Think Leo di Caprio on the lower decks of The Titanic. Well, maybe not, but you get the idea. However, the major downside is that the girls are not as attractive in comparison to George Street. On the other hand one night stands are more commen here as this area is a lot closer to the major residential areas of Marchmont and Newington.
Grassmarket: this is an area where you will find a good range of pubs for pre-drinking before heading to a club later on. A friendly mix of locals, tourists, students and the dreaded stag and hen parties. A good place to run some bar game. There are loads of pubs, which are all perfectly acceptable, so I’ll just recommend my favourite two: The Black Bull and Biddy Mulligans.
Bar Salsa: a salsa bar just off the Grassmarket, this place always looks jumping from the street but on closer inspection it tends to be sweaty, overcrowded and a sausage fest. I would avoid.
The Three Sisters: A huge pub with a large outside area. Decent for pre-drinks, a lively atmosphere with lots of hen parties who you can banter with very easily. However, the attractiveness of girls tends to be variable.
Espionage: popular with the international crowd and tourists. Consequently the age range in here fluctuates quite a bit – you will see quite a few older people in here. Quality of girls is not the greatest, especially in comparison to George Street.
The Hive: infamous in Edinburgh. Grimy, with lots of scantily clad 18 year old 6s. Lots of sloppy makeouts on the dancefloor here. Particularly fruitful for a cool guy as the competition is spotty 18 year old boys. On the plus side it’s cheap as chips and busy every night. Open til 5am during August.
Cabaret Voltaire: cool venue with a decent bar upstairs and a good mixed club downstairs. Nice girls but decent competition from the guys. An almost hipstery vibe.
Bongo Club: haven’t been here very often. Quite grungy with decent enough girls. I’m reliably informed it has a great hip hop night during the week.
Liquid Rooms: very open plan, a venue that is used for gigs but doubles as a club. Not been particularly impressed with the layout or the girls when I’ve been. Open plan and uninspiring.
Revolution: Typical chain bar/club. More sleekly presented venue, redolent of the George Street style. Lots of stag/hen parties as well as birthday parties. A few decent girls, but nothing to write home about. Middle of the road stuff.
Cav: another infamous venue. A little bit out of the way and populated by 18-20 year olds who tend to be “working class”. You’ll see fake tan, short skirts an even some “designer sportswear”. A decade ago it was the place to go on a Sunday. My advice would be to avoid it if you are aged over 25.
Silk: never been to this club near the Grassmarket. When I’ve walked past at closing time there have been some decent girls dressed indecently and the familiar spotty 18 year old boys chanting football songs. A well put together dude could crack it, although I’d be prepared for some princess behaviour.
Prices
Decent room in a flat in a decent area - £400-450 (long term). Short term leases on airbnb will be considerably more, especially in summer. During the international festival (for another datasheet), all bets are off.
Pint of beer in most places - £3 pound odd
Entry to most clubs - £5-ish
Pint of beer on George Street £4-5
Entry to most George Street club (weekends) - £8
Overall
Edinburgh can’t compete with many of its European counterparts for volume of stunning girls, but there are plenty of cuties to go around for the guys who have got their act together. I find daygame to be the more profitable method around here but I have seen others do well in the clubs as well.
