Hurricane season is rolling around. Coincidentally 5.56 is finally starting to come down in price and I was able to score a good deal on some 9mm.

On top of stockpiling ammunition, consider getting a re-loader kit for spent cartridges.

You'll still have to provide your own powder, primer, and bullet. But its better than solely relying on stockpiled ammo, because along with food you can be guaranteed ammunition will be one of the first things to be looted in a shtf scenario. Reloading can also be fun, though I haven't tried it yet.

I've been looking into picking up a reloader, but don't have a garage where I can install it at.

Eventually might get into it. Maybe even get into casting pistol caliber bullets.

That would take it to the next level. What would you cast them from, lead bars?

I have friend that's casting his own in .300 Blackout. He's like the Nutty Professor when it comes to this stuff. He's the guy that got me into reloading.

Lead is abundant and wouldnt be hard to find even in a survival economy.

The same thing could be said about prepping....spending so much money and time into something that will never happen in our lifetimes in the US of A.

If preppers want to put their prepping theory into real life scenarios.....just move to Iraq, North Korea, Eritrea, or Venezuela and report back.

Depends, if the scenario they are prepping for is a zombie outbreak or Mad Max IV, yes, they are wasting time.

A most likely scenario is a complete economic breakdown where your money is worthless and everybody is living hand-to-mouth. Read the links of the guy describing the Argentinian Crisis, thats a likely scenario. If that ever happened in the US, the rest of the world would fall way behind.

There was a period like that in the previous century, before the US was the economic powerhouse it is today. Another one like that would be worse since now the majority of people are clueless on how food is grown, raised, or processed.

If electricity or supermarkets where down for a week, most of modern people would starve for a week.

I dont see any of those preppers with the arsenal of a small african warlord stacking on seeds for their hydroponic systems.

Which brings me to my next point: add a small cache of drugs to your prep. Not just antibiotics and ibuprofen, but real, hard, gets you high drugs.

In an actual Marauding Tribes of Lord Humongous scenario, your gold bars will be worthless, as the only things worth anything will be women, guns, ammo, and drugs.

I prep because my safety, and well being are my business. I've never believed that the apocalypse is coming, and we will be living like Mad Max. But I do believe that there could be disruptions of supplies.

^ look at the gas shortages in the 70's.

If you imagine a politically based disruption of oil flow coming from major superpowers (like russia, china, the EU and USA all vying for control over oil fields or something), and throw in a cuban missle crisis event, you've got fear, lack of fuel, and global panic in one conceivable basket.

That's a hypothetical, but it's not unfathomable. If we see looting and civil unrest, think furguson on a wider scale, we've got a reason to have beans, bullets, and band-aids in the cellar.

All you have to do is look at New Orleans during Katrina or parts of FL that get hit by hurricanes to see why it's a good idea to have an emergency supply of some essentials on hand.

I don't think anyone here is advocating living in a lead-lined bunker full of ammo and gold coins, but having a way to get water, food, and to protect yourself when the utilities aren't available and the cops aren't around is important.

A more sensible and coherent plan than those outlined in most "preppers" forums or blogs.

Do any of you guys have nightmares about this sort of stuff on an apocalyptic level?

I've had a couple of profoundly realistic experiences, where shit felt very real.

In one of them, I wasn't far from a nuclear blast site.

The sensation was very palpable - I could literally hear the ear drum perforating noise and feel the radiant heat and force of the blast.

In another, I was within a city, with small gas explosions occurring all around me, caused by a prior major explosion.

I was in San Salvador back when the murder rate was ridiculous. The tension in the city was palpable. Occasionally you'd hear bursts of gunfire, and see the police rolling out looking ready for war. Whole damn city would shut down at nightfall.

Also seen a car get set on fire. When the gas tank blew it shook the entire block, knocked pictures off the wall, dogs going crazy, etc...

If you are going to impose your will on the world, you must have control over what you believe.

I'm not sure this is true. Whilst I'd be the first to advocate martial and physical proficiency, it is very hard to fight and raid when you are half starved. If you cannot provide for yourself, you are forced to constantly raid and take only what can readily be harvested. This leads to tremendous wastage, and a life of unsustainable hostility.

I think there is an extremely naive mindset amongst a lot of 'airsoft preppers', who think that because they pew pew on a range, or go paintballing with their buddies on the weekend, they are somehow an SF operator. They long for collapse and violence so that they can use all their badass tacticool skills to fuck shit up and finally escape their mundane lives.

In reality, they have no idea what it would actually be like to be undermanned, against an unknown force of enemy, trying to fight in hostile ground against a well prepared and defensively minded opposing force. People seriously underestimate the effect of the intelligence cycle and logistics cycle in any form of disaster or conflict.

So, the survival plan is sitting it out in an airtight bunker, AND stealing food, ammo, guns and drugs from people outside?

Or are they just going to line up to give them up to youy as tribute because you have the guns, you make the rules?

How many preppers have lived In hostile places before?
Not even war.. But extremely bad neighborhoods where it's actually unsafe to go out at night?

How many have been shot at?
How many have dealt with the clean up of human remains after trauma?

How many have grown their own plants before.

How many people even use their stocks for as practice.
You can stock pile a bunch of stuff but if you never use it or test yourself, how do you know if works

I have a machete, and enough food growing in aquaponics/hyrdoponics tanks to feed me a couple days. Just today I bought a solar charger for my phone/iPad that can work my air pumps for my plants and fish as well. I took an EMT course, have a tricked out first aid/trauma kit, and make a point to be friendly with the neighbors. I grew up poor and I've been in enough "bad" places that have taught me to get by with less.

Any situation that involves society completely collapsing, like a monkey with infected with rage breaks loose and starts biting everyone in sight? I'm as fucked as everyone else. If the zombies come, I'm screwed the minute the nuclear reactor stops getting proper maintenance. No amount of ammo can save you from fallout. Not to mention disease, injuries, or just plain bad luck.

A more common scenario, say a tornado, severe storm, or blizzard hits the city and shuts down the stores and power for a couple days, well, I won't be running around like a chicken with my head cut off.

If your can organize your neighbors, find a group of people invested in maintaining their community, demonstrate some marketable skills, keep your head on your shoulders, you have a much better chance of making it than holing up and firing shots out the window. Especially if it's a temporary situation.

The best prep you can have is game. Be charismatic. Have some leadership capability. Be interesting and have some experience that extends beyond driving to and from work all day. Speak a couple languages, travel a bit, learn what life is like for people that can't have everything they want. Learn a few different skills beyond posting pics on instagram.

If you are going to impose your will on the world, you must have control over what you believe.
