I am thinking of places to visit when I finally get some money together. A lot of people have had positive experiences with East Africa and so I was looking for some insight into the best place to go for a British guy in his early / mid twenties?

Ha course. Was just after other peoples' experiences more than anything so I can make up me own mind. There is one kind though, I'm not sure what the race is called, but they're quite light skinned for africans. I think they live in Ethiopia?

Ethiopia seems to have a good reputation. Another spot I've heard good things about is Kampala, Uganda.

The info on Africa is pretty lacking on this forum, as it's not a huge destination. Hopefully you can bring back some reconnaissance on the area.

Ethiopia and Liberia were the only two African countries to avoid colonisation in the European "Scramble for Africa". I would definitely check out Ethiopia in East Africa. The Ethiopians under Menelik II inflicted a worse casualty rate on the Italians in the Battle of Adwa (1896) than any other European battle of the 19th century which led to rioting in Italian cities. Ethiopia in the end was conquered by Benito Mussolini's forces in 1935 using mustard gas and killing some 275,000 Ethiopians over the course of the next 6 years before the Ethiopian patriots (with British and Commonwealth support) drove them out in 1941.

I can mildly recommend Uganda. The women are easy and nightlife is fun, but it's a horrible shithole.
Ethiopia has way prettier girls, less HIV, and it is not so chaotic.

There are many Somali refugees in Addis.
It can't be that difficult to find them there.
I talked for two minutes to a decent looking somali girl over there, but was in a hurry and passed.
Getting the somali flag in Addis must be much easier than visiting Somalia.

Go for Ethiopia.
The country has alot going and Addis is seeing major changes in construction of infastructure, buildings , hotels and restaurants.
Food is great, coffee is the best, nightlife non stop, people friendly and girls beautiful.
You wont see many tourist around, except for places like Lalibela (which is beautiful) , Gondar and Aksum.
First encounter with Africa is an assult on all your senses and you will love it.
I felt perfectly safe all the time while I was there. Did not experience any form for corruption either.
Besides pickpocketeres and trafffic you have nothing to worry about.

Zanzibar also have some potenial.

I visited every country in East Africa and I suggest Uganda for a newcomer. Great country and the people speak English. It is cheap and has everything; easy woman, crazy parties, incredible and diverse nature, extreme sports, ... Ethiopia has the hottest woman but the language is a hassle and people try to rip you off more there. For a long stay for an experienced traveller, it is my preferred choice though, the country is really special in a way, very distinct from the rest of East Africa. The same goes for Rwanda, its a magical place but difficult for a short time visit and more expensive (my datasheet: http://www.rooshvforum.network/thread-34808....ght=ruanda ). Burundi and East congo are not advised for africa newbies, although you can have some cool adventures there. Tanzania and Kenya are cool as well, more touristy and huge countries offcourse. If you want safe and arranged vacations look there, wildlife is great as well, but everything is more expensive.

Really depends on where you're going and what your budget is. I flew from North Africa to West Africa, and from West to East, but inside those areas I mostly took buses between countries.

The prices weren't bad at all. I don't remember them exactly, but I think it was around $400 to fly from Ghana to Ethiopia (so across the entire continent), and then from Nairobi back to NYC I paid around $330, which I remember because it was so insanely cheap. I never mess around with 20+ hour bus rides. I'm 6'4 with a beat-up back, that shit kills me.

As for the flying itself, there were no safety issues but it was definitely a hassle. Hopefully you're not a guy who gets annoyed easily. Africans don't have the same etiquette as Westerners. People were constantly cutting in line, shoving, kicking my seat from behind, yelling across me to their friends in the back of the plane, etc. I also ended up spending 20 hours in the airport at Lagos because of flight delays. You just have to accept it as part of the experience.

I always used planes. Not that expensive. Saves you plenty of time, remember distances are often big and roads might not always be in the best condition as with the buses.
Travelling during rain season will be slow, challenging and at times difficult.

Kenyan airways and ethiopian airlines are both pretty decent and cover all the major places. Bot have good standard and safety.

Personally I think travelling in Africa is too much of a hassle. Take the bus ride from Accra to Lagos, for example. Ten hours or so on paper, but in reality passing three land borders means six opportunities for customs and immigration people to bust your balls, shake you down, and go through your shit. I strongly recommend staying in one place for an extended period of time. That way you may get to know some people and get invites to funerals, weddings, etc. where you can really experience their culture. Much better than most of the lame "sights" you might see in Africa. Just make sure any event is not hosted by overly religious (i.e. tea-totalling) people, you want to go to a legit funeral where you can get hammered and hit on girls. One guy told me his first time trying coke was at a wake in Togo, that is the kind of funeral you want to go to.

Transport is always a mess. Busrides will be uncomfortable, semi dangerous and extremely long. Flights are much more expensive than in Europe/USA because of a lack of traffic/competition. It just depends if you have the money for those.

Actually, you can get laid in Mogadishu easier than you'd expect.

What are you looking for out of your trip?

Uganda is a good compromise. Ethiopia is my favorite and has the best looking women, but it's not the easiest place to get laid. Dom Torres is living in Uganda now. You should get in contact with him. He knows the area well at this stage.

I've heard great things about Ethiopia, both on this forum and from other people. The women are apparently very beautiful there. If I were to go to Africa (especially East Africa), I'd hit up Ethiopia first.
