Choosing a martial art

i just started boxing about 2 months ago in LA. it's the most insane shit i have ever done...i can only go like 2 times a week right now but i want to build up to 3 times a week.

i highly recommend boxing to anyone who is considering it. it is definitely changing my whole life, and i can't wait to keep pushing myself to learn more...i have not spared yet but am looking forward to it once i get my weight down a little bit.

go boxing, it will change your life!! good luck.

It's not about looking feminine, it's about getting home safe.

I would never ever ever use martial arts to defend myself. I know to you in US makes no sense at all, but in Brazil if you are about to be robbed, never react.

Deixa que essa fase é passageira, amanhã será melhor você vai ver a cidade inteira seu samba saber de cor!

Shit, I must admit Jiu Jitsu looks very scary.

it takes a while to get good but once you figure it out you can be very dangerous in a lot of ways. watch old tapes of royce gracie before people knew what he was doing or how to stop it.

Yeah knowing how to stop it is what I'd really like to learn, alot of martial arts rarely focus on ground fighting/defense until very high levels of having been practicing them.

Same thing here in Honduras, even if you're really good in your art its probably not worth it.

Your pick of martial art should be about the actual workout not about self defense (unless you're female and we're talking anti-rape tactics). If you want the best possible defense against getting robbery or assaulted, pick up running.

That is true in some sense but when robbed it is probably more sensible to just give the robber the money because he might be armed. Having said that sometimes you get assaulted in a bar or club and it's not a feasable option.

I seem to have narrowed down the options to boxing, mma and krav maga.

My point was that one shouldn't rely on martial art as an option to get yourself out of mortal danger.

Point taken. Since I started going out solo and hitting more on girls I find that other guys have gotten a lot more hostile towards me. Incidentally, just last night I almost got into a fight for calling a guy cunt, after he had molested one of my female friends. I need to stop doing stupid shit like this and learn to just walk away. I just want to stand up for myself though, but when alcohol is involved things can turn sour pretty fast. This time I should just probably have told him to back off instead of calling him a cunt. Outside of night game I think it is safer to continue to be more aggressive.

I talked with a martial arts instructor once. He said that karate works only when you're standing up. But when...let's say... some guy's on top of you trying to beat you up it doesn't do you any good; it's useless. For that situation, you'll need tae kwon do.

AHAHAHAHHHAHAHAHAHAHA WAIT AHAHAHAHHAHAHA

dude, please tell me you are joking. This is the worst advice (or the best joke) i've ever seen on the internet.

Here are the 5 that matter. The rest are basically garbage/ineffective.

Brazilian jiu jitsu. Muay Thai. Boxing. Wrestling. Submission wrestling (catch-as-catch-can aka shoot wrestling.) Watch ufc 1-10 and you'll see style vs. style". The best Kung fu and karate guys were brought in and go DEMOLISHED by 175 lb brazilian jiu jitsu blue belt named "Royce Gracie". Maybe you heard of him.

Honorable mention goes to Kyokushin Karate for their hardcore training and sparring. The rest are seriously worthless UNLESS you are already a legit street fighter and athletic. The philosophy shit and kata are just made to take the learning longer and the process of taking your money more effective, and longer.

This film shows a Kiai Master who can project his energy to knock opponents down without even touching them! He then accepts a $5,000 challenge from a much younger student.

I recommend Nike-fu or Revolver-fu.

That makes no sense. I'm sure the Americans here have enough common sense not to just react. Many Americans carry guns and there is no ju-jitsu or kung fu technique that can match up to gun-fu which is the art of sending a pellet of metal through bone and tissue at a very fast speed.

It's just about having options in certain situations.

How do people in Brazil rob you, Chocolatina? And what if a woman attacks you in a club? Blames you for sexing her man and starts to whale on you? What if you are put in a bad physical situation i.e. a man who SIMPLY will NOT take no for answer?

Women attack each other out of jealousy. A girlfriend of mine was attacked for no reason in London by another female because my friend (a bloke) assaulted her brother (punched him in the face).
My female friend was shocked and very confused, obviously not accustomed to such a predicament.

Concerned that the situation would get real ugly for either (my girlfriend was Asian and knew a crew that rolled with those throwing ninja stars - don't even ask), I butted in and hurled the other female gently into a heap of trash.

I feel if my girl knew how to defend herself (without the ninja stars) she may have just put the other lizard into a gentle submission.

Most girls have NO idea how to fight whatsoever. Just type "girl fights" on youtube for entertainment. They just flail their arms around like windmills, scratch and pull hair. They have no clue how to throw a solid straight punch. You will never see a girl knock another girl out. So if Mrs. Chocolate learns even a little bit of martial arts she can kick almost any other girl's ass. There are defenses Krav Maga teaches against hair pulls that are very effective and easy to learn. When some pulls your hair, you cup their hand with yours, clutch it tight to your scalp then bend at the west. It basically becomes a painful wrist lock for the hairpuller. Girl fights always have lots of hair pulling so Mrs. Chocolate should learn that one.Guys will probably never need this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0r_fkq5hhds

Check out Wing Chun Kung Fu. It's very simplistic and doesn't require a lot of strength to do. It's what Bruce Lee studied as a kid. I'd also look into getting into some grappling art in case someone gets you on the ground. Knowing basic wrestling will do you good. Boxing is also good.

Learning anything to proficiency will be good enough. The most important thing is that you learn to keep your head when being confronted and have some techniques in your muscle memory so you react properly.

If you had to learn only two things, it should be boxing and grappling. 90% of your strikes are going to be punches and nothing beats Western boxing in throwing fists. And after that you need to know what to do when it goes to the ground because it WILL end up on the ground if the fight goes on for more than 10 seconds, IOW if someone doesn't get knocked the fuck out right away.

I never, thank god, had been robbed. I lost my wallet one day, but it was empty and I let it fall at subway because my bag was open (high school days, you know?)
If a girl gets crazy in a club because she is jellows I would calll the security for her and in 30s this girl would vanish. I'm calm person. sometimes too calm. But I know what happens when I loose my temper, so better not to. I'm not a fighter for sure, but a friend of mine kung fu fighter gave me some tips of where to hit, since girls like to pull hair and stuff like that.

I'm an Aikidoka and I must say its the most interesting martial art I've seen and I'm glad I chose it. To decide which martial art is for you you gotta research and observe alot of martial arts, like the ones the guys already mentioned. Read about them, watch videos, look at pictures, focus on the one that for some reason interests to you most wether its because its aggresion, peacefulness, philosophy, etc.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Will start taking boxing classes tomorrow. Will do that for about 5 months and then we'll see. Thanks to everyone for your feedback.

Has anyone trained in Sanshou (Sanda)? I'm interested in going to China next year and studying it. The style itself looks interesting. Any martial art that promotes eye gouging, ect. is good in my book.

For self defense: Muay Thai, Boxing, MMA

For fun: Judo, BJJ (This one is not so bad for self-defense in a one-on-one situation but you don't want to go to the ground on the street, usually your opponent is not alone), anyting you want

Ali: Sanda seems to be a good martial art, a bit similar to muay thai so it's cool.

Last time I had to fight in a bar was w/ 2 assailants. I used a handful of salt to blind the first attacker and used that window to neutralize the second attacker. By the time the first dude was able to see the fight was broken up. There's no rulebook on fighting. It's to win. And if they're badder than me I'll pull out a fighting folder or Glock and beat the evolutionary odds.

I have some training from the military and law enforcement. Jujitsu is a good style, but not one style is perfect. Pick up different moves from different camps. I have about 5 power moves that have served me well, and never strike w/ a closed fist.
