This just happened in California:
"Revenge Porn" Defendant Sentenced to 18 Years
While the length of the sentence is debatable, the main thing that struck me is the mainstream commentary surrounding these type of cases.
While many will point out that this case is evidence of a pervasive "rape culture," I think it shows how rape culture doesn't exist, and why men as a group are the ones protecting women from individual males who would harm them.
Men:
Yes, the men who built the website and those who submitted to it were committing violations. However, it was the supposed patriarchal system that stopped it, the culture and law that said that this is unacceptable and actually stopped it -- not just tweeted about how horrible it is.
It is nothing new to folks here, but as this case will probably get a lot of media attention and shares on social media. So just remember, that it is another example of how some individuals are violent and criminal, and those criminals are men. However, it is men who are protecting women (and other men) from those intent on doing harm.
It is an argument against the idea that our society embraces a culture that allows sexual violence toward women, not in favor of the existence of a "rape culture."
