I'll bet alcohol was involved. I wish I could find the story, but I read it in a newspaper back in the pre-internet days in the 1980s, not long after I had been in Germany in the US Army myself.

That is more likely, but I would not discount the lucky active sperm explanation. Though that's a 1 in a million chance there.
