Kampala, Uganda Datasheet

Kampala is the capital of Uganda in Eastern Africa and by far the biggest city in that country. It is an overlooked travel destination and might be a great poosy paradise. However, the whole Uganda is one of the poorest countries in the world and a MAJOR shithole.

I’m sure that a lot of Kampala expatriates and NGO employees will hate me for releasing this datasheet. For too long time they had all the fun just for themselves.

If you haven’t yet, you may want to read Sp5’s thread on Entebbe and Kampala.

Getting there is rather simple (for African standards, at least). Emirates, BA, Turkish Airlines and others connect Uganda with the world. You can obtain a visa on arrival at the airport for 50$, so you bypass the visa application hassle at embassies. Immigration won’t ask too many questions, but fingerprinting is required.

My lay stats in Kampala:
- Total 28 girls (therefore 10 re-bangs and three regulars) in 40 days
- Roughly one out of three girls is from night game, 60% from online game. There’s also one daygame notch.
- Two threesomes
- Golden touchdown
- Consistent double ups

The women

Ugandan girls have traditional values, are generally feminine, caring, kind and know how to party. If they find you desirable, they don’t shit-test you and don’t act like western cunts.

It’s no secret that they have great booty – I never saw such enormous asses elsewhere. Some girls have big tits as well; C- and D-cups are common.

On the other hand, girls are not pretty. The majority is in the 4 to 6 range. Stunners are rare, but you can still find them. Ugandan girls do not age very well; the wall hits them hard in their late twenties or after giving birth to their first child. I ran into a lot of single moms. Mother’s mean age at first birth is 19 (according to the World Factbook).

I distinguish two types of women:
- The traditional ones – they dress long skirts, have a very slow walk (some do more toddle than walk), basically no conversational skills, own a 2005 cell phone, avoid eye contact, traditional beliefs from the 19th century.
- Those accustomed to western lifestyle – they wear more or less fashionable clothes, own a smartphone with internet access, already ate a pizza or a milkshake, like to go out, hang out at upscale shopping malls, had a foreign boyfriend before or are interested in landing one.
For best quality, focus on westernized students.

Poverty is rampant; few women use deodorant or baking soda (smelly armpits galore!) and not all of them shave.

Easiness and how to game them:
ug girls perceive their own men as egoistic, liars, cheaters, loudmouths and therefore prefer foreign men, especially whites.
There is a notable Indian community in Uganda. Indians usually work as managers or shop owners and are known for treating their employees poorly. Therefore, Indian men have the lowest value here. Asians, especially Chinese, have a bad reputation as well.
I don’t know the SMV of African American men but if you tell them that you’re from the west you should be fine.

Asshole game is counterproductive and will scare off the girl, you better use confident gentleman game. No need to wine and dine if you haven't banged the girl yet, and don't overly compliment her looks. That said, buying an appetizer and a drink will make her feel comfortable around you which is key. A simple date shall not cost much more than 10$ for both of you (I only took the highest quality girls to upscale venues, and one date would cost me around 25$, including transportation). Following these rules will bring you very far with the ladies.

My logistics were not good. I stayed in a very basic remote guesthouse but that did not hinder my success with girls at all.

Online game
I used badoo and got many messages each day. If you don’t have a whatsapp account, get one. Girls prefer to chat over there. I used badoo one month prior arrival and got almost 100 numbers. This huge pipeline made me almost neglect night and day game.
I didn’t use Tinder.

Night game
Nightlife is big in Uganda. Locals love to go out and every day is something going on. People go out in order to have fun, and not for showing off. Unfortunately, bars are very widespread and some venues are riddled with working girls.
In Kololo, Bukoto and Nakasero districts, you’ll find upscale bars and beer gardens. The crowd is most international here, with lots of westerners. I never gamed a western girl – why dealing with entrails when there’s so much local prime beef available?
Big Mikes, Bubbles and Casablanca in Kololo are popular among high quality girls.

Bars such as Amnesia, Mateos, 9 Degreez and others are located on Kampala road in the central business district. Here you rarely see a foreigner, but the girl quality is lower. The ratio is not in our favour as well. I rarely pulled from here, but oftentimes set up a first date here or hung out with a regular.

Kabalagala is located 3 miles south of town and there are plenty of bars (Capitol Pub and De Posh being the most infamous). 90% of girls here are prostitutes. Shoring is rather easy and there’s no bar fine as it exists in Thailand because the girls are on their own. Just watch your wallet and make clear you don’t pay for sex. However, the girl will ask you to pay her money for transportation. Those girls are very poor and transportation is expensive for locals (more on that later).

Rock Garden at Speke Hotel is another upscale bar and attracts working girls as well. Girl quality is way better than in Kabalagala and girls are more sophisticated as well, but shoring was slightly more difficult for me, and the venue is rather small.

I rarely went to night clubs and never pulled there.

Day game
Street game in Kampala is very easy. In theory, you can approach any girl and she will likely give you her number. A direct line such as “Hello, I like you and want to invite you on a date” works.
The problem is that the girl quality during the day is so low! There are few 6s and fewer 7s. Even worse, for every woman you see up to three men. This especially goes for the whole central business district (except Kampala road maybe). Better daygame spots with acceptable quality are Garden City / Oasis Shopping Mall, Acacia Mall, and Makerere University.

Keep in mind that most girls can’t afford going out at night and rarely get in touch with westerners. Some are very shy and it can take you two or three dates to get a girl to your place.
With a pipeline that huge and night game that easy, I didn’t daygame much. Eventually, I got the bang with a 7 on third date.

Social circle game
Local guys are friendly towards westerners and they do not cockblock. Some want to be friends with you. I easily got to know locals, they are all curious where I’m from and what am doing in their country. I paid some of them a beer and they appreciated it much. Then I just asked politely if he knows a girl who would have sex with me. Simple.
One guy set up two dates for me which led to instant lays. One of those girls he brought straight to my place and before he left me with her, he told her: “Make no mistakes – he is my friend.”

Having local friends is rewarding, but you gotta ask for the girl’s pics before meeting her. What an ugandan man finds attractive (mostly chubby girls with enormous asses) and what you consider bangable can be a different pair of shoes.

Other observations
- There are still many girls without a smartphone. Mobile communication (they call it airtime) is not cheap, not even for western standards. If a girl doesn’t reply your text, call her. Maybe she just has no more money on her account. Or she accidentally deleted your message. Very few girls would ignore your texts.
- Talking about sexual performance: Many girls give amazing head.
- Cockblocking is no issue, and locals have poor game. You only get some competition in upscale beer gardens (western men).
- Logistics is your worst enemy. More on that later.
- Homosexuality can lead to life imprisonment for “repeat offenders.” Heterosexual anal sex is also severely punishable.
- Being funny and cocky might lead to misunderstandings, and many girls don’t understand an ironical statement.
- HIV rate is 7.2% average in the country (according World Factbook). I heard that this is even worse in the capital, and one out of three working girls being infected.

Things to do
Kampala is a disgusting shithole, with no notable tourist attractions. You can have a look at Gadhafi mosque, or visit one of the traditional markets (Owino in town is one of the bigger ones). Or you visit Victoria Lake, around 10 miles south of town.

Last but not least: logistics and the shithole factor
I have been to Bangkok, Manila, and industrial cities in Eastern Ukraine. Let me tell you that Manila is a first world paradise in comparison with Kampala!
I really don’t know where to start – can any forum member confirm if it’s also that bad in countries such as India or Bangladesh?

- Air pollution is insane and roads are dusty and smoked-up. Most vehicles on the road are very old and have no catalyser. Food stalls on streets work with coal-burning stoves. Some people are firing rubbish. The air in Manila is like a fresh breeze to me…
- Transportation is a nightmare and deserves its own thread. There’s obviously no metro, no tramway, no trolleybuses, no skytrains. So, from fastest to slowest means of transportation:
- The boda boda (or just boda) is a motorbike taxi. The motorbikes are made in India. You find a boda driver anywhere in the Kampala. The boda brings you quickly to your destination, but it’s rather risky as you don’t get a helmet. Many bodas are involved in accidents. What I hate about them is that drivers always try to charge inflated prices, so price negotiation is needed. After all, a boda is not much cheaper than a taxi in Bangkok. Also, there are thousands of boda drivers in Kampala, and you get hassled constantly as they want to drive you somewhere.
- You find a taxi (locals call it a “Special hire”) mostly at larger hotels, upscale bars or shopping malls. None of them has a meter, almost all of them are black taxis, few have a/c. Price negotiation is key. A “Special hire” is always stuck in traffic.
- The mean of transportation number one is a Toyota minivan, licenced for 14 passengers, and is called “Taxi” by the locals. The “Taxi” is very slow and always stuck in jam traffic. The minivan constantly stops in order to pick up new passengers. No aircon available.
- Vaccination against yellow fever and hepatitis is a must. Malaria is present throughout Uganda and an outbreak of typhoid in Kampala was reported February 2015.
- Even third tier Ukrainian towns have a nicely maintained public park, a central square, a fountain and a bench to sit down. Such luxury does not exist in Kampala, at least not in public. But some upscale hotels have a (fenced) park.
- Fertility rate in Uganda is at 6 children per woman and median age is at 15 years. Central town is totally overcrowded with people. Any major Asian metropolis seems half empty to me in comparison. Population growth rate is among of the highest in the world: 3% p.a.
- Every bigger commercial building is called a “Plaza” or “Shopping Mall”. As much as I know, there are only two malls with western standard: The Garden City / Oasis and the Acacia. I visited Garden City and it’s nice for Ugandan standards, but totally pales in comparison to any mall in SEA.
- Electricity supply is unstable at times, even in Garden City or at the airport.
- Service in restaurants is very slow. Sometimes you wait more than 30 minutes for your change. Even in four star hotels you wait an eternity.
- There’s much police, armed with assault rifles. Also, virtually every shop or restaurant has an armed watchman with metal detector. Security checks are more intense than in SEA.
- Finding the products you like from the west is tricky. There’s no Ikea, no H&M, no Burger King, basically nothing. Nakumatt supermarkets are some of the best in ug but they don't meet western standards.
- Credit cards are accepted only at upscale bars, restaurants and hotels; everywhere else you have to pay with cash.
- Do not take small USD banknotes (20$ or less) here. The exchange rate will be much worse.
- Hotels with western comfort cost as much as in the west. You can stay in a small guesthouse instead, but cockroaches, bed bugs and inadequate power and water supply make it a bad experience.
- Poverty is very visible, and begging on the rise.
- Due to bilharzia, Lake Victoria is not safe to swim.

I could go on and on, but this list gives you an idea of what a horrible shithole this is.

I will soon post datasheets of smaller ug cities as well as photographs and maybe even a lay journal. Till then feel free to ask questions in this thread or PM me.

Nice rundown. I am still getting messages from Badoo girls in Kampala two months after leaving. I should go back, pick the hottest one, go to an HIV testing clinic with her and just keep her for five days or so.

Nice datasheet. I am really looking forward to reading more Ugandian datasheets and your lay journal.

How much are those guesthouses you mentioned? I just did a quick search on agoda and the cheapest I found was 44$. I assume most guesthouses can't be booked online. And how about other daily costs in Kampala such as food at restaurants, drinks at bars, cover charge at nightclubs?

Dipar,

Most guesthouses have a paper and pen reception, that means no computers, and no agoda booking. Even 44$ is an inflated price for a guesthouse.
Kampala has hundreds of guesthouses and small hotels. They all have very basic comfort. Some are okay, but there are horrible guesthouses out there...
Some guesthouses have bed bugs, some don’t.
Some guesthouses have security, others don’t.
Some have warm water, some don’t. Water supply is mostly mediocre.
Most have a (very small) table.
A locker is usually available, but I never used it for hygienic reasons.
Not all of them are clean.
Not all beds are infested with bed bugs.
Some rooms have a window, but not all of them.
Amenities such as a mirror, a trash bin, TV exist usually, but exceptions apply.
You won’t find telephone and a/c.
Hotel safe does not exist in guesthouses.
I've seen lodging advertised as "gusthouse" or "geusthouse"
If there's a bar on ground floor, then there will be loud music until 2am, sometimes till dawn.

Price per night: anything from 6$ to 25$.

I'd recommend booking an agoda hotel for two days and then you can search a cheaper guesthouse. Kampala road is very centrally located; you might start your search there before you're looking near the so-called Taxi Park.

This hotel was at 20$ per night. It's rather clean and the mosquito net in a good state.

And that guesthouse costs only 7$, with shared toilet. As you can see, the room is secured with a padlock. I took a girl there and she hated the room. She said: "I like you but I will never have sex with you in this hotel!"

Local food (banana, chicken&chips, rice) is cheap. Basic meals cost less than 3$. European food is mostly served at upscale restaurants, and is as expensive as in the west. Even basic eateries serve pizza for 10$ and more.

A 500ml beer is usually at 2$ in a bar.

Club cover at club Silk was less than 10$ per person, I think.

I don't think so.
- Infrastructure is horrible
- Uganda is remotely located, landlocked
- Visa at 50$
- More expensive than SEA or Ukraine, but worse service
- Typhoid, sleeping sickness, yellow fever, malaria...
- HIV
- Girl quality is low - Dominican Republic has prettier girls (and not only black ones)

Uganda is still a great country, but definitely not for everyone.

Kaotic,
The problem is not the Indian tourists. It's the local Indians. I think the British brought them there many decades ago. Ugandans and Indians do not congregate. I never saw an Indian man with an Ugandan girl in a private setting.
Most Indians treat local employees horrible (low pay, long work hours, unpaid holidays, disrespectful behaviour towards Ugandan employees). No wonder nobody likes them.
If you use badoo, you can just write "I'm from the USA, but my grandparents are from India, that's why I look like one of them" Don't act like those IRT and you should be doing well.

The lay report

Golden Touchdown
I met her on badoo. She lives near Entebbe and she agreed to come to my hotel as soon as I would arrive in ug. I called her at the airport and she forgot to meet me. “Let me just prepare myself and then I’ll come”, she said.
I went to my hotel by taxi, checked in, took a shower and had a longer chat with the friendly hotel security guy until she showed up.
We went to my room and I undressed her after a short talk, no LMR. We were having sex and afterwards, she told me she had not been with a man for four years.
I didn’t really believe her at first, but I later found out that this is not uncommon. Many Ugandan girls reject Ugandan men, so they just stay alone, sometimes for years.

The hardcore slut, 23 years old
Few girls have skype, and this woman was the only one I talked to on webcam. There was a good vibe with her online, but first meeting was average at best. We met at a bar and she ordered chicken for herself (she wouldn’t even ask me if I’d invite her), and asked me after two minutes “But we are having sex afterwards, yeah?” She wasn’t that classy as she seemed to be online.
I took her to my place and she undressed herself as soon as she entered my hotel room. Double up can be so easy, but she wasn’t very good in bed.
I met her a second time but it didn’t get better than the first meeting, and she told me that she banged more than 200 men in her life…
I read my chat with her, looking for any red flags, but there was nothing (except the fact that she was very open minded). I didn’t learn anything from that woman. How can someone be sophisticated online, but so classless in real?
Some days later, she asked me if I want to participate in an orgy. I refused and never met her again.

The squirting nymph
I met that twenty something girl on badoo. She is a self-described nymph and immediately started talking about sex in our chats. She has a well-paid job and a sexy petite body. She is exactly my type but she’s in an open relationship with a man 20 years older than her.
At first meeting in an upscale bar, she ordered supper for herself and encouraged me to order a meal too. We talked a lot about stuff and she was very down to earth despite her great looks. She surprised me when she offered to pay the entire bill (“it’s not much money, you know”).
After the supper, she had to go home. She was busy for the whole week, but eventually I met her again and took her to my place. She was very tired from that hard week but her sexual performance was still top notch, and she squirted when I fingered her.
I missed her a lot, she was sophisticated yet dirty, very sexy, polite. But we stopped texting soon after I left.

The single mom, 21 years old
Another girl from badoo. She’s originally from a village some 100 km away from Kampala. She seemed to be very reserved at first but then started to trust me. She told me sad stories about her kid (the father left her when she got pregnant, but she fears him constantly as he might take the kid away), and apologised for telling me all that. Despite being a single mom, she still looked decent. Upon first meeting, she said she’s been raped as a child. Nevertheless she is an optimist and she tries to be a good mother.
Our first meeting was in the central business district. After finishing my drink, I suggested heading to my place with a boda (motorbike taxi). She agreed and enjoyed intimacy with me.

Many girls here are living a simple life. I heard many stories from girls about the local guys. Those dudes obviously have no game, many of them gamble, drink, cheat and so on. That’s why white men are so high in demand. Gentleman game worked best for me. If the girl feels comfortable around me, she would likely come to my place. Sometimes I bought a girl a small gift on first date (nothing more expensive than 5$). Girls were very happy when I did give them something, and some of them want to give me something in return.
-Some girls prayed for my well being
-One woman cooked food for me and brought it to my place when I told her I ate only a sandwich that day
-Girls make the bed or offer to clean my dirty clothes

Threesome (20 and 21 years old girls)
I asked a regular if she’s down to a threesome, and she suggested bringing her best friend on Friday evening. Her bff was an aspiring model. (Modelling is increasingly popular since an ug woman won a model contest in Kenya some years ago. Any tall and slim girl can call herself a model here now.) So we all met and drank some beers at my place. The model girl was obviously shy and it took more than an hour to make her feel comfortable.
The girls didn’t kiss or touch each other but the threesome was great anyway.
Highlights that evening: Taking pics of both girls posing in lingerie, the model giving me a deep throat blowjob, fingering two girls at the same time, partying together in a bar.

The stunner (shoring)
I ate at that Italian restaurant at Speke Hotel and went to Rock Garden, a bar just next to the hotel. It’s a four star hotel and I wonder why they tolerate all those prostitutes at the bar…
Anyway was having a beer and the working girls tried their luck on me. At least five girls approached me, but one of them stood out. Light skinned, very slim yet big tits, short hair hands down but she was still very beautiful. I took her number and met her some days later in the evening. She didn’t talk much and obviously did not believe me when I said I don't like p4p. When I told her “Let’s go to my place, but I don’t pay for sex.” She was pissed off in the beginning as I wasted her time (so she said), and at that time her workplace was already closed. But she came to my place anyway.

Daygame (23 years old?)
Few girls on Kampala road pass the boner test, but they are very approachable. I opened five girls on the street and got three numbers. One of them I met on a first date in a near bar. Took her to my place, but she was very shy and showed LMR. Didn’t get more than some kisses.
Next day, I invited her to lunch at an upscale restaurant. I ordered a basic meal for two and then she had to go back to work. One day later, we met near her place in a small bar. I told her that most couples in Europe do more than kissing on third date and she got the hint. We went to a nearby hotel and I got the bang over there.
This girl was very sweet, dressed fashionable and she never dated a white man before. As I had to leave the other day, I didn’t see her anymore but we still text on whatsapp. This is the kind of girl I’d like to spend time with when player fatigue hits me.

The Rwandan girls (fail)
Rwandan girls aren't so easy, and they likely give you a hard time. I approached a rwandan girl on the street and set up a date for the same evening. She showed up late, and she wasn't alone. Her ugly sister accompanied her to the bar and made sure I'm not having fun with her sister. I have no time for such games, and didn't meet her anymore.
I met another rwandan woman online. Things went smooth in the beginning, but then her cousin called. After the call, I went for the kiss, but she blocked me. "You can't kiss me now, my cousin is coming here!" That woman wouldn't even ask me if she can take somebody else to the date... Her cousin was very fat and destroyed the vibe.
The girls went home and I couldn't set up a second date.
There were two or three other unfortunate meetings with rwandan girls.
Some say the rwandan girls are the most beautiful in Kampala and there are indeed some legitimate stunners around, but for me it's not worth it.

If you’re into squirters, Uganda is a good place for you. Some girls don’t come a lot, others get extremely wet and spill up to a litre. Especially women from the west of Uganda are known for being wet.

There’s a Rwandan sex technique called the Kunyaza. I applied that technique on only one girl, and she wouldn’t stop coming.

But let’s read more about that (Source here):

Quote:Quote:

Prof. N. Bizimana (PHD) analyses the style, which, if put to good use, will naturally cause mutual satisfaction, joy and happiness.

(…)

The aim of this article is to present an uncommon sexual technique used, as far as we know, only in Burundi, Rwanda, the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Western Uganda and Western Tanzania (…) for triggering female orgasms (…).

(…)

This sexual practice termed in Rwanda and Burundi as Kunyaza and in Uganda as kachabali has already been published in two popular books Le Secret de l’amour à l’Africaine (Bizimana, 2008) and Kunyaza.

(…)

During the simple practice of kunyaza, the man rhythmically and continuously strikes the glans of the clitoris with the glans of his erect penis, which he takes in his hand or between the index and the middle finger moving in the same motion from top to bottom and vice versa or from left to right and vice versa.

(…)

Kunyaza and triggering of female orgasm Kunyaza is believed in Central Africa to be a good technique for triggering female orgasm. It was developed after the people empirically realised that only few women are able to reach orgasm through the use of PVP [penile vaginal penetration] alone.

(…)

The woman may reach orgasm within 3 to 5 minutes and this can happen before the man has an orgasm.

(…)

Kunyaza enables women to have multiple orgasms, which is why they prefer it to the PVP.

(…)

The quantity of expelled liquid is estimated to be up to one litre and more. However, there are some women who do not respond to the stimulation of kunyaza with liquid production.

Love the report. Would love to try Uganda.

Your lay stats are impressive. "A golden touchdown, consistent double ups, and 28 girls (therefore 10 re-bangs)."

Reminds me of the time I went to India and got a golden "half-century", consistent double and triple-ups, and 9 girls (thus 4 re-bangs). Actually, I have no idea what your some of your stats mean. You gave a girl a golden shower? Double ups are? Having sex twice in a row? Or does that mean you analed these girls consistently? And how does 28 girls imply 10 re-bangs?

Trip report to western Uganda

I update this thread and write about my experiences in the Ugandan countryside.

After one week in Kampala, I needed a break from the hectic life the ug capital has to offer. I decided to go on a safari in the west of Uganda. But there were some obstacles. I didn't plan beforehand and I hadn’t much money. In addition to that, my time was very limited. All I had was a tourist guide book.

Organised tour operators usually provide 15-days long all-inclusive packages for not less than 2000 USD. As I didn’t find any offers in the 200$ - 300$ category, I organised the trip myself.

The coach
I took a coach to Fort Portal, a city approximately 300km west of Kampala. The ticket costs only 7 Dollars. Didn’t know that Nissan manufactured overland buses once upon a time…
But see for yourself.

Those buses totally lack comfort. No air-condition, no on board toilet, and poorly maintained vehicles (especially the suspension is in a bad state). Inside the bus, there are many seats but not much space. To make matters worse, most Ugandans don’t use deodorants, and it stinks inside. At least there were no animals inside.

There is no fixed departure time; the coach departs as soon as every seat is taken, and that can take hours. I remember the driver starting the engine several times. When I thought we could finally depart, he switched off the engine again.

After two hours the driver would finally depart. Driving time to Fort Portal was five hours, including a stop in a city named Mubende. During the 10 minutes stop, local people approached the bus. They are selling bananas, homemade chapats, chicken, fish and beef and make a living out of that. The food was very tasty.

Fort Portal
Arrival in Fort Portal was at 5pm, and I checked in at a hotel in the city centre.
Fort Portal is a city of approximately 50000 inhabitants. Some tourists stay here for a short period of time as several national parks are located nearby.

It was not yet dark and I had a beer at a small bar on the main street. A local dude approached me (let's call him James), asked me where I’m from, what am I doing here and so on. When I told him I want to do some sightseeing, he suggested visiting the near crate lakes and he offered going there with me. I accepted. We shared a boda boda (motorbike taxi) and drove to the nearest lake. When we all arrived, we spotted a hippo swimming in the lake. Hippos are the most dangerous animals in Africa when they're aggressive, and this one was barely 10 metres away from us. This is the first time I saw a hippo in the wild. James and the driver also haven't seen a hippo in real life before, and they just live 15 km away from that lake. We carefully observed the hippo for some moments but then we returned to Fort Portal as it was about to get dark, and the motorbike’s headlamp didn’t work. Back in the city, I paid James a beer, he was a great tour guide and probably the funniest guy I met in years. He would have been a great wingman but later I learned that he is totally in love with his chubby girlfriend. James then left home and we agreed to meet again.

Later, I was ready to go out. Fort Portal is basically a village and its nightlife options are very limited.
Uganda is not Afghanistan - having a beer is possible, and most bars are open on weekdays. However, there's nothing going on and there are no decent girls around. I’ve spotted 10 to 15 bars in town, but they usually consist of two or three tables, a pool table and a TV where a football (soccer) match from the UK is shown.

In an alley, I found the only (?) night club in town, the Star Night Club. Don’t get me wrong if I say night club – this venue is nothing more than a dark hole. In front of the “club” is a bouncer who asked me to pay the cover – 2000 UGX, around 0.70 USD. I was asked to put the money inside a small hole beneath the entrance door. After I paid, somebody handed me the entrance ticket through said hole. Inside the “club” are a pool table, a sitting area, a bar, and a dancefloor. As it was a weekday, the venue was almost empty, and nobody danced. The only woman inside was the barmaid. A local dude – his front teeth were missing – asked me to pay him a drink. He wouldn’t stop talking, and it was difficult to understand a drunk local without front teeth. I endured his presence for three minutes, and then I left.

I walked by some other bars, but no venue was kicking. In front of one bar were five or six prostitutes, waiting for customers. Those working girls were all obese and ugly.
I called it a night and went to sleep.

The National Park
Next day, I took the Link coach and drove south. As I asked the driver to drop me off at the nearest point to Queen Elizabeth National Park, I disembarked somewhere far away from the civilisation. I was somewhere near the city of Kasese, less than 20km away from the Congolese border, and there was nothing except a gas station and some motorbike taxis. I ordered one driver to bring me to the QE Park.
The route was long and arduous, especially with baggage.

I paid the entrance fee at the gate of the QE Park (approximately 40$, don’t remember) when a local guy approached me. He introduced himself as a private driver of a 4WD car and he could drive me around that QE Park during three hours. Maybe I should have bargained, but his 100$ offer seemed incredibly cheap in comparison to a 2699$ tour package.
Me and the driver agreed that he would show up the next morning at my hotel in the park.

My hotel was located inside the QE Park. Upon arrival, I learned that my one year old tourist guide book is already severely dated. The room cost me five times more than stated in the guide. “The hotel has a new owner”, the receptionist explained. That’s how business is done in Africa…

The hotel was located in a small village. I walked around and quickly found the park administration. I wanted to ask a park ranger if wild animals come to that village, but at that time the administration was already closed. It was late afternoon. Behind the administration building is a great vantage point. The view was wonderful as there are two lakes nearby, but I was not supposed to enjoy the view for a long time…

Suddenly, my question has been answered – I indeed heard a lion roaring, and it seemed to me that this lion was very close to me…

I took this picture at the park administration.

There were no wild animals in sight, and I didn’t know what to do in this situation. So I just left the administration building and walked around as it was getting dark:

I obviously took a different route and was lost. Five minutes later, I arrived at a small restaurant. A dozen of locals (probably park staff) were in there, watching a Premier League football match. As I drank a bottle of water, I just realised what happened before. It was a foolish decision not to return to the hotel but to walk around and explore the area.
When it was already dark, I decided to go back to my place. A waiter explained to me the shortest way back to my hotel. After leaving the restaurant, a Land Rover stopped in front of me. The driver, a park ranger, told me: “Get in, we spotted some lions!” Two minutes later, we found a whole group.

Sorry for the blurred pics. A phone camera does not work well at night…

What amazed me most was the fact that those lions were not shy invading that village. After all, my hotel was just 30 m away. The lions eventually ran away and the park ranger brought me back to my place.

Next morning, my driver showed up punctually at 7am. I was pleased to learn that I was his only customer. Those three hours weren’t spectacular. That guy was driving around, did his job well but a safari is quite boring to me. At least the driver was kind enough to drop me off in the city of Kasese, where a Link Coach was just about to bring me back to Fort Portal.

This is the only elephant I saw.

I crossed the Equator on the way back to Kasese.

This is what I learned on that trip:

-Safari packages make sense if you want to see every wild animal. During my three hours trip, I saw one elephant (from far away), one lion, tons of birds and buffaloes, and one hippo. Some animals such as giraffes or zebras are to be found in other reserves. I talked to other tourists and they didn’t spot a single lion during an eight hours trip in the wilderness. A safari is overrated imo. It’s quite expensive, takes a lot of time and there’s no guarantee that animals are around.
-I began to despise Non-Government-Organisations and, particularly, white NGO employees. “Haters gonna hate”, some might say. But the reality is that I was the only white guy on the coaches. Also, I hardly ever saw a white face when I was walking around in the central business district in Kampala, which is a busy shithole. The NGO workers move around in a SUV with private driver, they reside in expensive hotels and during daytime they hang out at Acacia shopping mall or at the resorts at Lake Victoria. They avoid basic African restaurants as well as public transportation. They don’t positively contribute to the development of poor countries. NGO staff work 90% of their time in an office with aircon, and at times visit project sites, taking pics with black school children which they upload to facebook. They are absolutely useless for Africa, and sadly earn very decent money. If you want to share your wealth with the poor, or just simply want to make a donation, find a NGO where 100% of staff are locals. Such organisations work more efficient and their overhead costs are much smaller.
-Poverty is rampant, but most people don’t live in misery. In smaller cities, salaries are rather small (20$ - 100$; in the capital it’s considerably more, from 70$ to 300$) but people seem very optimistic. Quality of life is improving and people have an optimistic foresight.

Data sheet Fort Portal:

How to get there: Link coaches connect FP and Kampala several times a day. The departure point in K’la is near the Taxi Park. Any boda-boda driver (motorbike taxi) knows that point. Price for a one way ticket is 7$. The journey takes around five hours.

Accomodation: Several guesthouses are located in the city centre of Fort Portal. They aren't listed on agoda or trivago, so you just show up at the reception. There’s no need to more than 20$ per night. More upscale hotels are to be found outside the city. “Upscale” in this context means Wi-Fi, a swimming pool, a lobby, stable power supply, warm water, minibar, and skilled hotel staff. In Bangkok, you’d pay 25$ for such a hotel. Here you should not be surprised if they quote more than 100$.

Nightlife: Star Night Club on Kahinju Rd (behind Hotel Wooden). Or visit the bars on Lugard Rd and Rukidi III St. The repulsive hookers are hanging out in front of some bars on Lugard Rd.

Girls: Most girls are either ugly, fat or out-of-towner type. Some are all in between. For those who are interested: Fort Portal is home of the Toro tribe (also described as Batoro / Mutoro people). It’s an open secret that Toro girls are great squirters.

Night game: sucks

Online game: Not enough girls, at least not on badoo.

Day game: Probably the best bet, but I didn’t try it out as I was busy with other stuff. Quality is generally low, so if I would return then I’d have a look at the upscale hotels and look out for receptionists and waitresses.

Money: Take enough cash for your intended duration of stay. Change your western currency into UGX in Kampala, and do not show up in Fort Portal with anything else than Euro or Dollars.

Safari: I chose Fort Portal because it’s close to several national parks. I’ve been to Queen Elizabeth Park. Semliki Park and Kibale Forest are also nearby. If you like hiking, you might like the Rwenzori Mountains at the Congolese border. The crate lakes are not that spectacular but they are close to Fort Portal and there’s no entrance fee.
