Mark Zuckerberg plans to connect all of Colombia to free internet

Quote:Quote:

Mark Zuckerberg

I just met with the President of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos - Presidente, and we announced the launch of Internet.org in Colombia to connect the whole country.

Before today, only about 50% of Colombians had access to the internet. By launching the Internet.org app on the Tigo network today, we're giving people free access to basic internet services for jobs, health, finance and communication.

Colombia is the first country in Latin America where we've launched Internet.org, and it's the fourth in the world after Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya.

We hope to spread Internet.org to more countries soon and we're excited to continue on the path of connecting the whole world.

I'm impressed. He convinces the president and introduces the whole country to free internet, just to have more fb users? Hats off for the hustle.

I don't know the details of this deal but - just look at their body language!

Columbian president must be one sleazy player and appears to have found a perfect beta knight who will work for him for free.

Not this Zuckerberg again. Soon all Colombian women will be sitting online doing attention whoring. It's not just bad for men, womens' mental health probably decline due to this as has been seen in some internet frontier countries.

One more country falls to female self-esteem inflation.
Broadband+smartphones = End of traditional femininity.

This is just the start, Zuckerberg will be trying this shit in every 2nd and 3rd country without 1st world telecom infrastructure.

Goes back to his July 2014 WSJ piece:
Quote:Quote:

A recent study by Deloitte found that expanding Internet access in developing countries would create 140 million jobs and lift 160 million people out of poverty, and that this newfound opportunity would even meaningfully reduce child-mortality rates. Across sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and Latin America, the Internet will help drive human progress.

Perhaps the most important change might be a new global sense of community. Today we can only hear the voices and witness the imaginations of one-third of the world's people. We are all being robbed of the creativity and potential of the two-thirds of the world not yet online.

I have no doubt that this could improve the lives of the poorest people in a number of ways, but make no mistake what Mark really wants by "changing the global sense of community" is to transform these people into perfect little social media drones.

Ah yes, another instance of introducing the blessings of technology inorganically to communities which are incapable of installing and maintaining it themselves without outside assistance.

Good business plan for Facebook - no doubt here.

As for how this will benefit Colombia, it is far from a given that it will, as much as the language of the Colombian Government and Zukerberg try to hide that.

More Colombians with internet access could only mean one thing, more Colombian camgirls.

Spacex and Google have projects to do similar things around the world. It's inevitable that all countries will get internet at some point. It's just a matter of when and how it will be monitored.

No, Zuckerberg has the dominant body language here. He's the one who's manspreading!

After all this Zuckerberg will go home and bed his Chinese "4" and think to himself with a smug sense of satisfaction "mission accomplished." Nothing is more beta bucks than this exhibition. Sounds like he got played by a third world politician.

Normally, I'd agree with you but Zuck is an awkward nerd, so body language isn't a good sign of how he really feels. Like a lot of talented nerds he has a supplicating body language due to awkwardness but when they get away they resume plotting their behind-the-scenes revenge-of-the-nerds wargames.

He does have a chicken head though

FB has enough media penetration he probably didn't need to throw money around. Seems like he was convinced to go the "extra mile" with financial incentives to certain politico elite. Classic third world play.

FB only had 50% penetration into Colombia. But even more telling is that FB will be controlling the entire country's Internet. You think the NSA wiretapping the Internet is bad? The nerds at FB are much more capable than the NSA. And even more important than the NSA is that FB will be legally allowed to sell all this consumer information, unlike the NSA.

On the surface I can see how this may seem to be supplicating to one politician, however deeper down this is about pure control, ownership & power. A politician is only in office for a short-term. Owning the entire Internet infrastructure and all electronic communication is forever.

LOL, how can they burn Zuckerberg? "Block" access to FB in the country? First of all, all access will be THROUGH Zuckerberg's Internet infrastructure, so they won't be able to block it. Second of all, the people would retaliate and every country would outcry that they're restricting speech and are the next N Korea.

Not to mention Facebook has the backing of the US - don't think for one minute that Facebook does NOT exchange information with the NSA for return favors.

Love it or hate it, Zuckerberg is literally one of the top 10 most powerful men in the world.

You really can't get a better revenge of the nerds story than him. And the thing is he doesn't have enemies they same way that world leaders do. Putin, Obama...all of them have sworn enemies who want them dead. But all of these same guys want to be friends with Zuckerberg.
