I used to run down Route Irish in Baghdad frequently to make booze runs at the airport. Always in a soft-skinned vehicle, sometimes armed, sometimes not.
Good times.
I did that - in 2003 and 2004. The duty free stopped selling booze when the Iraqi government took it over.
It was dumb, wasn't it? I stopped after I saw a burned out vehicle on the fly-over. I also know an Army girl who got shot in the arm on that road coming back from the hairdressers at Camp Victory, March 2004. A Romanian who was with them got killed, another seriously wounded. A drive by shooting with AKs. One time in 2005 I got chased by a car with guys with AKs in it on that road. I had a PSD though, we just jetted away.
I was on Route Irish a couple of months ago, it's much improved despite ISIS/Daash being 30 km away.
