Buying a pair of binoculars

Buying a pair of binoculars

I've recently taken up the hobby of bird watching and was wondering if anyone on here could recommend a decent pair of binoculars to purchase for this activity. I don't know much about binoculars and I want to keep it on the cheaper side, but also realise that it may be worth it to spend a few extra dollars to have better quality. I'd say that my maximum budget would be $200 USD, if any of you have specific recommendations, they would be greatly appreciated.

For any of you wondering why I picked up bird watching, I first did it a couple of years ago as an organized trip on the Caribbean coast of Colombia and it was a blast, we chased birds all over the place for an entire day and probably covered about 5K of fairly dense jungle . Colombia has over 1500 different bird species, one of the most diverse in in the world, last week I was at a coffee farm near Pereira and was amazed once again by the number of birds and also butterflies buzzing around, a great way to chill after partying so hard at the feria de Cali.

I'd strongly recommend anything made by Steiner. They have excellent binoculars. Their military grade stuff can be thousands of dollars, but they have several really good models in the 150-500 price range.

Great post. That is actually an interesting concept. I know absolutely nothing about bird watching, although I have binoculars and have been known to watch herons and woodpeckers in the tidal swamp off my back deck.

It had never occurred to me that bird watching could be active and social.

The following is a link to REI's article on how to chose binoculars, you can also review many models on the site. REI is one of my favorite stores and has great prices. http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/binoculars.html
