Stuart Scott passes away(ESPN)

http://espn.go.com/espn/story/_/id/12118...ies-age-49

I took a special interest in his journalism career; Growing up I was a sports junkie and at one time I wanted to go into the field. This dude was the standard barrier was guys like myself

He covered the game and talked like me and my boys while we watched.

His presence will be missed...

Horrible news. I loved Stuart. He influenced so many to the point everyone else is kinda of annoying to listen to because, "Who do they think they are? Stuart Scott?" It's terrible to die so young like this. He was battling cancer and I always wondered if he was a workaholic because he was on air so fucking much back in the day. I used to wonder when did he ever sleep.

Wow. What a huge loss. God takes some people before their time.

Prayers for his family and may his soul find peace.

The good really do die young. Carried himself with a lot of dignity during all this fighting this as hard as anyone could, sad to hear he succumbed to it in the end. RIP

Damn, this really ruined my morning. Just finally saw his recent ESPY's speech a couple of days ago.

He had the right philosophy though. Didn't want to spend time dwelling on his prognosis or feeling sorry for himself, just went out and lived life right up til the end.

RIP

I'll be honest - I never found him nearly as talented as DP, KO, Bob Ley, Max Kellerman, Eisen, and a number of other anchors and journos in sports but sucks going out young like that

I feel bad he's gone. But you're right. He was nowhere close to as talented any of those guys.
He's a big reason I stopped watching ESPN (unless it was a game). His hip-hopping of sports highlights made Sports Center unwatchable. And you could almost trace the demise of the NBA from must-see TV to what it is today --simply awful from his beginnings on the network. It's the age of me-me-me-me-hip-hop-thug-life so I can get Stuart Scott to say Boo-yah on a highlight.

I didn't even know he had cancer. I hated his schtick, but didn't want to see the man gone - especially at 49.

The man was as cool as the other side of the pillow. I do agree that E!SPN is what it is today because of him. I don't mean that in a good way. He was so good at what he did, everyone tried to emulate him. You can't do that though because there is only one Stuart Scott. RIP in peace.

Gonna miss the guy, I could not stop laughing when ESPN decided to do a retro 70s style Sportscenter one day and Stu had his big Afro and quoted Parliament-Funkadelic during every highlight. Was one of a kind...RIP.

Stuart Scott, in his day, was cool. Amused mastery incarnate.

I’d go so far as to say that he and the other SportsCenter greats (Dan Patrick, Keith Olbermann, Kenny Mayne) were my original blueprints for “cool.” I bet that’s true for a lot of other guys in their late 20s or early 30s.

Yeah, he became a "brand" and ESPN rode it into the fucking ground. The man outlived the name, “Athlete Dying Young” style. Oh well. For a while, he was so good that they wanted to keep him around once he sucked—we should all be so lucky.

Stu went to my high school and wrote for the student paper, same as I did years later. I raided the paper's archives and clipped out a bunch of his articles. For a lot of years, those articles were my greatest claim to fame.

RIP

Just remembered that he and my uncle went to UNC Chapel Hill together in the 1980s (they're both the same age). I certainly will ask him about Scott. Michael Jordan went to school there around that time too.

RIP I liked his reporting. Was wondering what had happened to him and didn't know about the cancer. 49 is way too young to die.

What kind of cancer was it anyway? All the reports I've read say "he died of cancer" but none seem to be specific as to what type.

Sad news. ESPN however make a mockery of sports journalism/analysis. It's kinda like FOX news for sports: loud, obnoxious, and lacking substance.

I want to post this excerpt from Wikipedia. It answers your question and also provides some insight on his battle with cancer, for people who aren't familiar. Pretty inspiring too.

Quote:Quote:

After leaving Connecticut on a Sunday morning for Monday Night Football in Pittsburgh, Scott had a stomach ache. After the stomach ache got worse, he went to the hospital instead of the game and had his appendix removed. They recommended preventive chemotherapy. By December, Scott—while undergoing chemotherapy—hosted Friday night ESPN NBA coverage and led the coverage of ABC's NBA Christmas Day studio show. Scott worked out while undergoing chemotherapy.

Scott said of his experience with cancer at the time: "One of the coolest things about having cancer, and I know that sounds like an oxymoron, is meeting other people who've had to fight it. You have a bond. It's like a fraternity or sorority." When Scott returned to work and people knew of his cancer diagnosis, the well-wishers felt overbearing for him as he just wanted to talk about sports, not cancer.

The cancer returned in 2010. Scott went into remission in early 2012, but he was again diagnosed with cancer on January 14, 2013.

Scott was honored at the ESPY Awards on July 16, 2014, with the Jimmy V Award for his ongoing fight against cancer. He shared that he had four surgeries in seven days in the week prior to his appearance, when he was suffering from liver complications and kidney failure. Stuart Scott told the audience: "When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live.”

Crazy that he continued working throughout the entire thing.

You should take a few minutes out of your life to watch his speech at the ESPY's last year. You won't regret it.

My reaction to his speech:
