This is a threat I have been wanting to post for some time now, but for one reason or another I hadn’t been able to write it. Now, that I can finally do it, I think it cannot come in a better moment since I bet many of you, guys, are making plans for this year regarding your health, a fitness activity, having a past time, working to get that alpha asshole attitude, learning a reliable self-defense training, etc. So, I guess this is going to be a great option for you.

This is a review of the courses provided at the Krav Maga Worldwide Training Centers, so you can have them as a very valuable option when making a decision about the issues listed before.

First. As you may know Krav Maga is a simple, aggressive, easy to learn, easy to remember, set of self-defense techniques developed by some Imy Lichtenfeld around the late 1930s which was introduced as the standard self-defense program for the Irgun, a Zionist paramilitary group that operated in Mandate Palestine between 1931 and 1948; and then become the core of the Israeli Army. Since the Irgun was an army composed by men of different physical skills (from skinny city boys in their teens to mature farmers in their fifties) it was necessary to create a technique so easy to learn that every man could handle it without regarding his age or physical strength. In this approach Krav Maga is a Socialist-Ethnic-Tribal technique of self-defense and fighting; and you feel and understand it in every class. Self-defense and fighting courses in official military training programs around the World are based on the fact that the conscripts quartered in boot camps are in their physical prime (18-25 years old in most of the armies worldwide). Not in Krav Maga. The techniques developed here are based on the instinctive moves and reactions every human has when attacked or wants to attack someone else; but also on the lowest common human physical denominators, so everybody can learn and use them. After one hour of exhausting practice people in class develop a strong sense of community. Everybody has just learned to be safe but just because the most important thing is that the group must be safe. Such is the philosophy behind Krav Maga.

After retiring from the Israeli Army, Imy began teaching Krav Maga to civilians. In 1981, under the patronage of philanthropist Daniel Abraham, Imy taught the system to a group of American athletes with backgrounds in boxing, martial arts and wrestling. The training was a six-week intensive course that involved over eight hours of training per day, six days per week. By the end only a few people passed. Among them was Darren Levine, who some years later created the Krav Maga Association of America and helped to popularize the technique in the US through the Krav Maga Worldwide Training Centers. The KMWTC have many locations worldwide. As for me I attend the Mexico City branch, so based in my experience I am making this stuff.

But now, let’s talk in a very practical way.

Why you should learn Krav Maga?
It’s a reliable self-defense technique. You are going to feel confident that you have the tools to defend yourself when SHTF.
It’s easy to learn and goes to the point. It’s based entirely in the instinctive reactions of the human body, you learn first to defend, then to counterattack while controlling your emotions in a very stressful situation.
It’s an excellent way to lose weight and get your body toned. The intensity of the training is so high that you will experience an accelerated loss of weight, also if you take the Bag Class (more about this below).
You’d get an asshole attitude. If you are familiar with the game concepts of this site you know that women love that in a man.
Your testosterone levels are going to boost. After two weeks of training you are going to find yourself doing and trying the most stupid things you can imagine just because your hormones are up.

Why you should learn it at one KMWTC?
The instructors are certified and know what they are talking about. From the very moment the instructor gives you the first instruction you know he’s serious.
The equipment and logistics are excellent. Just the best facilities, forget about those smelly traditional boxing gyms, this place is planned in every inch.
The classes are group and strict. Yes, this is the only way to learn a defense technique, but it also helps you to discipline yourself in a schedule. The tolerance is minimum –a five minutes delay.
They are pushing you out of your comfort zone all the time. One of the features I like the best about the classes is the fact that they don’t allow you to create a comfort zone. The instructors are all the time in a separate section. Five minutes before the class begins, the instructor downstairs to the classroom to prepare the session. Then he opens the doors and people get into the room. The treatment between the instructor and the students is respectful but cold. When you register for the course you are given some instructions. You are not allowed to stop making a routine. If you feel exhausted, you can slow down the intensity and speed, but not to stop. If you feel you just simply cannot continue you have to leave the room. If you can recover within five minutes you can come back to continue taking the class but you have to catch up the intensity of your classmates. When the class ends, the instructor leaves and goes to his section. Period. No backslapping, no talking, no gossiping, no flirting with anybody. Not a single chance of creating a comfort zone with the students. You can’t stay in the classroom neither, so either you get ready for the next class starting in 15 minutes or go to the showers.

The program is divided into two categories: Krav Maga and Fitness.
Krav Maga. A KM lesson is one hour long. It begins with a quick warmup of just five minutes which varies in every class (jumping the rope, squats, push-ups, lifting a bag sand and jogging with it around the classroom, etc.). After that it comes the practice of punches and kicks according to the defense technique to be learned that day. The practice is done in duos or groups of three or four persons depending on every routine. For this purpose the equipment used includes punch shields, kick shields and focus mitts. Now, the class focus on four factors. Technique, strength, speed and aggressiveness. It’s not just throwing punches and kicks, it’s about doing it with all your power and explosiveness all the time. You have to go from being passive to be extremely violent in a fraction of second -from a victim to an out of control predator. I am not going to lie you, the first three classes are difficult. At some point, at around minute 25-30 you are going to feel like vomiting from exhaustion. At minute 45 of the class, there is a one minute break to have water and rest. Then the rest of the class is used to learn and easy technique to protect you from an attack based on the movements learned minutes before. As a plus, during the class there’s always loud music as a hostile element during the practice. Another element introduced in the last minutes of the class is that of ‘special effects’, such as fog (the same one used in clubs) and stroboscopic light. In this way, you learn to defend yourself in a hostile environment with poor vision and annoying music.

Fitness. Fitness classes are divided into four categories: Bag, Focus Mitts, Kettle Bells (Russian Balls) and Cardio. These classes are intended to help you get the physical condition to have better results in your KM classes. Although they are not a requirement for the combat classes many people take some weeks or months of fitness training before having the other course. Even better, you can take both classes, Fitness and KM, and develop your potential quicker.

Bag. This is by far, my favorite class. It consists of a 45 minutes training in hitting a 150 lb Muay Thai bag. The class begins with a traditional boxing 10 minutes warming (jumping the rope, squads, push-ups, stretching, etc.) After that you are told to put on your training boxing globes for the routine. This, consists of practicing a combination of punches and kicks in parts. Let’s suppose that the combination of the day is: jab-cross-slip-cross-left-hook-slip-jab-right-hook-double-right-round-kick; first people is going to practice a 3-minutes round of jabs and crosses. Then another round of slips, jabs and crosses; then another round of hooks, etc. The rounds must be done all the time with extreme intensity and speed. The bag is 6 ft long. Unlike the bags used in Box and Muay Thai practices this bag is hanged to just stand, the base touches the floor and it has a ‘donut’, so the bag doesn’t swing. The exercise is just exhausting. After 20 minutes of hitting and kicking a bag like a madman you feel like vomiting from exhaustion. The fat burning is tremendous; I have seen guys loosing up to 50 pounds of weight after 6 months of doing this exercise on a daily basis. At minute 35 there is a one minute break for having water. The rest of the class consists in assembling the final combination after you have practiced all the single elements of it. Aside from being an excellent cardio exercise I like this class because in my opinion it’s the one which gives you the most about your purpose of having skills to defend yourself. Why? Because you get used to launch quick, strong, devastating punches and kicks at the slightest provocation. As simple as that. These two videos illustate some of the punches practised: video 1, video 2.

Focus Mitts. FM is a 45 minutes training session in box and/or Muay Thai combinations using mitts or Thai pads. The class begins with a traditional boxing 10 minutes warming (jumping the rope, squads, push-ups, stretching, etc.). After that a combination of punches and kicks is set and worked step by step. This is great training for getting flexibility and speed at your fighting skills and defense. It looks like this.

Kettle Bells. KM is a 45 minute circuit using Russian balls of different weights (16, 20, 32 or 60 lb). This class is probably the most exhausting. The circuit developed includes swinging the KB, abs, lunges, burpees, climbers, squats, etc. You get total and completely wasted. The class has a very important side effect though -your posture changes overnight because you work your core and legs in a very intensive way. It looks like this.

Finally, Cardio. This class is a 45 minute non-stop circuit of aerobic exercises, basically Box and Muay Thai moves. I took just 3 classes of it and it was all for me. The lack of brutal contact (whether against a person or a bag) didn’t appeal to me, so I left it. It’s an excellent cardio routine though, besides being very popular among women (about 90% of the attendees are women).

A final note about this system. You are not going to gain muscles here. If that’s your goal, don’t take these classes. Of course, when you attend these centers you find a lot of muscular guys, but that’s because such people has a background in box, martial arts, wrestling or after going to the gym for years. Here, you are going to develop skills to defend yourself with the side effects of losing weight, get your body toned, your posture corrected, your hormones boosted and a great sense of confidence.

I'm two hours away from one of the locations referred through that site, but I'm one hour away from a krav maga class that isn't. How do I know which one to choose?

I took KM for 5 years at one of their official training centers in Los Angeles. It's great stuff, but from a defense perspective and getting yourself into shape. I've been out of it for awhile and I'm not in the shape I was at that time, but I totally recommend it.

Here in the UK KM has become the latest and most commercialised bullshit the MA world has ever seen.

Frankly it is approaching TKD levels of nonsense.

I was under the impression that this was a parallel with the US teachings. Am I wrong?

I just started at a gym in Alexandria, VA at $98 per month but you'll have access to all of the training programs at the gym (which includes all five levels of KM as well as Jui Jitsu). I want to go all out with this training but I hope I don't burn myself out.

Yes, most of the gyms here seem like complete McDojos, and they are usually tied into a TKD/Karate gyms and advertise self defense to women and children.

That said, I have heard of KM gyms where guys are actually doing boxing/muay thai sparring. The OP's post talked a lot about basic pad and bag work.

In that sense, it may be valuable. I just don't understand why you wouldn't train boxing or muay thai.

You should tell that to the face of a pratitioner. Tell us how it went, if you are still alive to.

And sparrring IS involved, my gym has sparring and you can't even advance without doing it.

There is no martial art that will prepare you for the realities of street combat. That said, KM is the closest it's going to get. Just the basic principles of H2H combat are really good to know. You will learn basic weapons, situational awareness, what to do when confronted with a gun etc. There are some details worth knowing that can possibly save your life.

Obviously sport martial arts like boxing, Muay thai, jiujitsu are highly practical. I would recommend adding KM or another form of hand to hand combat as a part of your martial arts training.

I trained MMA for most of my 20's, and now I'm only doing BJJ. I plan on taking KM at some point. A close friend of mine did KM so I know about it. There is sparring FYI
