Japan - advice needed

Hi all!

I am a 20 year old guy, going to Japan possibly, during the Summers.
Let me tell you - I am not really into the game; just learning tid-bits from such awesome people like, Roosh, MiXx and some other VPs.
I must say, you guys bang with a swap of the hand.

Anyways, I am an Indian male. I just need a little information regarding the cost of living in Japan. I will be getting 1000$/month from the company - do you think it's good enough to live comfortably in Japan?
(I will be going to Tokyo or Nagoya)

PS: My personal 'cost of living', being Indian, is not sky-high compared to an American.

$1000 US a month? Is rent included? Even in places like Colombia/Argentina we're talking ramen noodle diet while living in a shitty part of town.

Japan is one of the most expensive countries in the world.

$1000 per month in Tokyo will be very difficult to cover your living expenses. Is your rent included in this number? I hope not! You will have to rely heavily on your two feet for transportation. As far as food, you can get by on noodles and rice, but you will want much more with respect to the options that you'll see on a daily basis. If you are comfortable with a minimalist/meager lifestyle while practically everyone around you has so much more than they actually need, you can survive in Japan. The cost of rent will be the major factor.

Dude,
$1k/month in Tokyo, one of the most expensive cities in the world, is peanuts, pocket change. While it could be possibly done, I certainly do not recommend nor suggest it as you'd be living a very miserable life/lifestyle because there's so much stuff to do in Tokyo, amazing restaurants, activities, tons of hot and fun clubs and all and you wouldn't be able to do not even 1% of 1% of what's possible/available in Tokyo due to a lack of $. Not to mention accommodation, that alone can eat a huge chunk of that amount. All in all, if all you've got is only 1K and you want to have a blast, I'd honestly suggest you to skip Japan until you have more $ and instead to a cheaper place like say the Philippines or Thailand. Even Thailand with 1K/month would be limit limit. You'd definitely be on the lower end of things. From my personal experience in all 3 locations (Thailande/BKK, the Philippines/Cebu and Tokyo, here's what I believe to be the minimum to have a good time in each:

BKK: 2K/month
Cebu/Philippines 1 to 1.5K/month
Tokyo: 3-4K/month.

These are my personal minimum estimations based on time I have spent in these locations. So if you want to go to Japan, 1K with all honesty, won't cut it. Even BKK would be limit, as you'd be able to stay at a cheap guest house, eat street food and get cheap booze from the 7/11 or during happy hours and pretty much live like a local. Clubbing to the nice clubs and all, not more than once a week and you'd have to be careful on how much you'd spent. Phuket or Krabi? Forget it as they're twice as more expensive than BKK, specially Phuket. With 1k/month, your only realistic option would be to either go to somewhere remote in the Philippines or up north or in Isaan in Thailand, where things are dirt cheap, but you'd better have a good handle of Thai language as there's very little english speakers there. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to discourage you or rain on your parade, but I'm just trying to give you a realistic view of what to expect from someone who's been there.

Having clarified this, I wish you all the best man and let us know where you decide to go and tell us how it turned out.

Cheers.

P.S. You mention being Indian, I'd suggest you contact/pm Donovan DC as he's also an Indian-American living in Tokyo and he can give you more tips.

Agree with everything here. I lived in Tokyo on a student budget and it was hard. The minimum apt you could find is probably 1k/month in a gaijan house. It will basically be a small shipping container sized room with a microscopic bathroom.

Using the subway will set you back a few bucks a day from what I remember. Eating at the cheapest places, like Yoshinoya will be 3-5 bucks from what I remember.

There is one CRAZY club in Roppongi where Japanese girls with fetishes for darker skinned dudes go. It costs like 10 bucks to get in. A beer is I think around 5 bucks.

So there is no fucking way you can have any life in Tokyo with less than 2.5k. But you mentioned you are from India so I assume you are moving for work purposes, not so much for social life. And I imagine you will end up living in an apartment sharing one room with 10 other Indian dudes, and you'll eat rice and curry for every meal and you will never go out much. So knowing how Indians are (since I'm Indian-American) I actually have faith that you could pull this off. Good luck.

A lot of generalizations and stereotyping there.

Hmm, guys - Thanks for such informative info.

1. No! 1000$/month is not the amount I am getting. I am actually having 2 options for salary, in two different companies. Its like this : $1400/month in Tokyo. and $1300 in Nagoya.

2. I am a vegetarian. (I mentioned it just like that - what I emphasize is I can live on rice/curry rather than an expensive non-veg diet [Image: biggrin.gif])

3. No! I am not moving for work as such. Its a 3 months internship, I am getting. And hence, I am planning on going not just to work my asses off, but to enjoy some social life too! (And the Jap girls as well [Image: smile.gif]

I hope that info proves beneficial for more relevant suggestions
