With a relentless look of malevolence, Grumpy Cat is not exactly cute.

But the piercing stare and air of withering contempt have proved astonishingly lucrative for the cat’s owner, Tabatha Bundesen of Morristown, Arizona.

In just two years the cat — whose real name is Tardar Sauce — has made $99.5 million from an array of products, including best-selling books and a film.

Not surprisingly, Bundesen believes her pet is "unstoppable."

She told the Express: "What she's achieved in such a short time is unimaginable and absolutely mind-blowing.

"I was able to quit my job as a waitress within days of her first appearance on social media, and the phone simply hasn't stopped ringing since."

Grumpy's earnings have dwarfed those of many of Hollywood's biggest names, such as Gwyneth Paltrow who, according to Forbes magazine, earned just over $18.6 million last year.

The cat is also outstripping the world’s top footballers including Christiano Ronaldo, whose total remuneration this year is estimated at $42.2 million.

Grumpy's permanent scowl is a result of her having been born with dwarfism and an underbite.

She became an internet superstar after Bundesen's brother posted a picture online.

Her fame spread rapidly especially once she was taken up by Ben Lashes — an "internet cat" agent.

The frown has proved irresistible on social media for 521,000 followers on Instagram and 255,000 on Twitter.

There have been a line of products including a brand of iced coffee, called Grumppuccino, and the cat is also "the face" of Friskies.

Last year the curmudgeonly cat appeared on the front pages of The Wall Street Journal and New York Magazine.

Grumpy’s big-screen debut is coming soon. The film "Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever" has been billed as a cross between "Home Alone" and "Die Hard.

I wonder what that 99.5 MM figure actually means. Given the quality of journalism these days, I'm guessing it refers to total gross revenue from all products the cat has been associated with. Not gross profit, not net profit, not the owners actual take home share of the whole cat business. So, they make it sound like the owner has made 100 MM, when in fact she's probably lucky if she's made a couple million. Still a nice step up from waitress. There's probably numerous ways a man could set up an online biz to profit from this cat craze. Maybe go niche, and focus on tattooed chicks and their cats.

I just think it's a sign of the times. Bitches are so silly with cats these days that a stupid little cat can generate that much money in sales. It's crazy.

Yeah I think you're right.

This article on YouTube stars says that:

The platform’s biggest star is a Swedish gamer who goes by PewDiePie and live-snarks as he battles mutants or navigates the virtual reality of Dinotown. PewDiePie has thirty-two million subscribers and earns four million dollars a year.

So one of YouTube's biggest stars earns 4 million / year - it's a lot, of course, but 100 million profit for the cat seems unrealistic.

she sees her cat as 'unstoppable'...that statement makes me think that she believes the money stream is infinite.

People will get bored, the cat will die and she will be alone. She had best buy a house and car in cash, and then invest in something that pays quarterly dividends for her to live on.

Grumpy cat being worth a hundred million just means one thing.

It means girls have heard of grumpy cat. That means one thing.

"You remind me of grumpy cat."

New all-purpose game device.

Opener: "Hey can I tell you something quickly? You look like grumpy cat."

Neg:
"Oh all my girlfriends tell me my job is awesome"
"Do they tell you you look like grumpy cat?"

Disqualifier: "Are you hitting on me?"
"You look like grumpy cat."

Comfort: "I like you. You remind me of ...grumpy cat."

Last minute resistance:
"We can't. I don't do that on an eighth date!"
"You are grumpy cat."

She suspects you of cheating:
"But why have you sent messages to fifty girls this weekend?"
"Because you're like grumpy cat."

As much as I love grumpy cat, I hope this doesn't become a thing where post wall women, desperate for cash flood the internet with cat pictures in the hope of making it big.

I agree. I think grumpy cat is making the same face any of us would make around a mummy like that.

Here's actual footage of grumpy cat when he had a non-wall-collider as his owner.

With some very good viral content nowadays you can make millions $. That Vitaly guy from Youtube made millions with his channel. The same goes for the guy who dressed his dog as a spider and did those pranks.

Grumpy cat is just much more market-able. Due to our very connected current media culture such viral stuff might be more profitable in the future.

I like Grumpy Cat.

Would I spend a dollar on some Grumpy Cat shit? Sure, be it a fridge magnet or $1 worth of Youtube views.

I guess a hundred million other people would do the same. Like that guy MJ Demarco says, to make millions you have to affect millions. Thats why 'viral` shit makes so much money.

Yes, its idiotic. Yes, cats are for old spinsters. Say what you want, hate what you want. Idiotic things can make money.

Not exactly. The typical pay for youtube videos after the split is something like 1000 dollars per million views, unless the person gets a lot of viewers in a marketable niche like baby toys and so provides extra value to advertisers.
The SA Wardega channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/wardegasa/about), has 399,303,345 views as of right now, with nearly a 1/3rd of those coming from the spider dog video. So, they have something like 400-500K gross income from youtube, having joined about 3 years ago, it works out to 130,000 a year or so, but really the lion's share of that is the last year when they have been popular.

Also, there is no way the woman and her cat have generated 100 MM in profit, let alone taken home that much.
Just because Business Insider or the Daily Fail publishes something doesn't make it true.
For example, Dan Bilzerian is said to have a net worth of 100 MM on wikipedia. The source? An article in the Daily Fail that has been passed around and cited in other publications. What does he own? Just because you take a picture in front of a private jet doesn't mean you own it. He likes to vaguely imply that his financial criminal father stashed money abroad, but I don't buy that. It's actually really, really difficult to hide money in the financial system these days. There is a huge scandal in Brazil right now involving Petrobras and many top politicians and business owners, and it all began with a money laundering investigation and just three Federal Police agents.
Blizerian makes good money now, but when you look at the early pictures especially and in general all of his instagram stuff, there is NO proof that he is anything but someone with access to money in the 6 figures and free time on his hands. People buy into that shit, because they want to believe. I know a handful of people in the ultra high net worth category, and the one common denominator is that they avoid publicity like the plague.

Bilzerian clearly has access to more money than 6-figures per year. He flies out tons of girls to Mexico. That alone would be atleast a 100k trip. The guy has serious cars, watches, weapons.

His burn rate is certainly 7 figures / year.

His dad supposedly has a net worth of $100 million. That would make sense. I wouldn't be surprised if his dad just splits the income from his money 3 ways and each of them end up with a couple million per year. I doubt he himself has $100 million unless his dad put it in trust for him.

I don't get it - how did she monetize this attention? Or the companies contacted her, asking her to pay her?

You guys need to bear in mind that most viral videos don't happen by accident. It's planned. Usually, an agency is involved weeks if not months before the video is launched...priming blogs and high-traffic sites to carry the video. It's a well-conducted symphony.

Youtube
TV visits - all paid later on
Commercials likely the most

But this the media - real numbers could be off by 50 mio. $

Jesus, this is the Grumpy Thread. The hate on here is a bit thick for my taste.

So the chick just so happened to stumble upon a cute cat and got ridiculously fucking lucky and made buckets of money she didn't necessarily deserve. So what?

No different than some guy tripping over a treasure chest he didn't bury.

I think it's an awesome sign of the times we live in and the power of numbers to make someone rich. And whether you love it or hate it, it's the sheer raw animal power of social media, which has both it's pluses and negatives (like anything).

There are still plenty of men out there getting rich off useful contributions to society. And never in history has there been a time where every useful man's contributions were handsomely rewarded... life isn't fair and never has been.

I mean, it doesn't mean I'm this woman's fanboy or social media's fanboy, but to me this is a story of the sickening abundance out there.

Go get some!
