Ponta had been the favorite to win, but was narrowly edged out by Klaus Iohannis, the mayor of the city of Sibiu, who has promised a crackdown on corruption.

He is from a small Saxon minority in the mountains of Transylvania. That minority has been there since the 12th century, way before the Romanians were awarded that territory after WW1, and many of them were shipped, 'sold' or deported by Ceausescu. He deserves it.

Volk is right. Dude is of German origin but that doesn't say much. I heard him speaking German and you clearly notice it's not his language of first choice.

Don't overestimate the influence he can exert. The president in Romania only has few limited powers (foreign and defense policy, appointing officials, representation abroad). The prime minister is more important for domestic issues. Nonetheless, it's good that Ponta's appeal to nationalistic sentiments wasn't very successful and that the Romanians made a rational choice.

I haven't been to Romania but I like the people and respect what they have achieved after Ceaucescu's lunatic rule. The EU entry came too early for them, I think, but so beit if it helps them to fight corruption.

Also, he is from Hermannstadt (Sibiu), which is definitely worth seeing if you are ever in the area.

He did a fantastic job as the mayor of Sibiu and I think that this vote justifiably reflects his success.

Didn't Czech Republic have German prime minister ? I remember one elections they had like 3 German candidates and 2 Czech. Eventually, Zeman, a Czech, won.
