Applied for job and leaving the country - advice?

Hi,

I've been talking with this one company for a while. Networked with a higher-up person and met up with him - the vibe was good. At that time there weren't any open positions at the company, but the guy encouraged me to apply when a fitting role comes up.

I also met a recruiter from that company at an event and exchanged some emails expressing my interest in working with the company.

Now a new role came up that is in line with my background. I applied for it a couple of days ago.

The thing is, I will need to travel to Europe soon to speak at a conference. It's quite an important event, so I won't be able to cancel that trip. I tried to postpone my flight though, but I just realised that the flight cannot be postponed - I would have to buy a new ticket.

So that means I'm only gonna be in the country for another week. I just want to avoid a situation where they get back to me and invite me for an interview and then I have to tell them that I'm not in the country anymore. That's just kinda stupid.

I am planning on coming back though - but my plan was to spend some more time overseas and come back in about 5 weeks. I.e. that's too long for them to wait for me to do an interview. In the worst case I can buy an earlier return ticket, but it will be quite expensive. Ideally, I would do an interview before I leave (if they are gonna invite me in the first place).

So I think the best thing to do is probably call HR and speak to the recruiter that I met some time ago. I will try to explain her the situation. I just don't want to come across as to pushy.

Any advice on how to handle this situation?
