Hey fellas,

Been doing quite alot of research lately on blogs and ive noticed that a bulk of the income is via advertising.

I have noticed that roosh's second blog (return of kings) does have advertising, but other sites like Christian Mqueen's Blog and Good Looking Loser have none?!?

Anyone got any ideas?

I have advertising. I was a sponsor on ROK in July. and Matt Forney.

Here's where we're advertising now- (its funny, have a look)

edit-----------
ohhh you mean advertising on my site. yeah, I don't.

Advertising is good if you have a lot of traffic by sheer numbers --- like ROK, Vitaly, Jenna Marbles.

advertising on a small(er) blog who don't yet have a BRAND looks tacky and turns off people that would otherwise read the site

The odds of anyone doing that are almost nonexistent.

Look at all the backlash that Return of Kings got this week. People were posting death threats and going crazy. Yet no one messed with the site by sending bad links or anything.

Worrying about bad backlinks is like worrying that some angry reader/customer is going to jump out of your closet and murder you.

Is it possible?

Yes.

Is it probable?

No.

Goodluck disavowing links if I send 100k viagra and payday loan backlinks to your site. It would be impossible to fix.

Great work diversifying the traffic though less than 25% from google is great, so not relaly a problem for you, but guys starting out could get wiped out early. You seem to be well past that threshold.

Only because your offended audience has no idea.

I and many people I know have had targeted negative SEO attacks on smaller sites ranked specifically to make money. These copped an almighty hit that was not recoverable.

The reasons why it would not affect the ROK is its a large authority site with tons of link variation.

But i think I am going off topic.

I've got several websites, but is it necessary to use my real name? It seems like lots of people are going that route.

If you're comfortable using your name your better off, part of blogging or having a youtube channel etc is that readers or watchers, your audience, they can connect with you. THey almost feel as if they know you or you are a friend. If you choose to remain anonymous you can still do well but its going to be hard to make that connection and blogs are all about return visitors and people sharing so you really want to have that connection. At the very least I would use a persona or pen name so there's something people can identifiy you with.

Its like youtube videos. People who make vids of a black screen or just their chest and not face you probably woudln't watch those. I think not using your name comes off as if you wont show your face can you really say you stand behind your product or are proud of what you do?

Don't get me wrong, I get that people are sometimes shy about their writing, I am a bit too. I get some people prefer to remain anomymous but you will probably have more success if you are willing to put yourself out there.

Lots of people like to essentially turn their name and themselves into their own brand and establish themselves as an expert. If I were doing a blog on SEO or something I may want to use my own name if I plan on trying to build up an SEO or consulting business off of my blog.

Advertising. Guest blogging. Running an affiliate program (obviously depends on your marketing funnel and budget).

You really need to be constantly or at least relatively frequently updating content, otherwise you will never get return visitors. Yeah you can advertise but once someone has seen your site or read your site why come back to read the same stuff over again.

You want to post regularly not only for search engines because they like it but also because you need fresh content or someone will look at your site once and never come back. I would compare it to youtube. I'll find a great station, subscribe and check regularly for updates. Now if they are doing at least a video a week I'm like cool I check back for new videos, if theynever put up anything fresh I will unsubscribe as I have seen everything they ahve to offer.

Cheers for the replies. It's an information website, so the need for frequent posting isn't required, hence my original question.

I suppose advertising is one way to go.

I guess it depends upon the type of information you're offering but there's always room for frequent blog updates. If I'm doing a blog about SEO, SEO techniques are always changing and there's always roms for updating. If it has something to do with cellphones there's always new cellphones comming out. I would setup the blog on auto post write a bunch of articles and have it set to post one a week so at least you have new posts comming out on a frequent basis.

To start an authority site today, from scratch, takes a coordinated plan of attack, a network to support you (including a paid coach/mentor), technical knowledge, the ability to create original content and most importantly... balls of steel. Oh and 1-2 years of living expenses while you're figuring it out. If you're trying to do it "part time"... good luck, but I don't see how you would pull it off... unless you were "produced" by someone who knows what they're doing.

You would have to be crazy to try to pull it off... the kind of crazy that would make you travel around the world to meet beautiful, mysterious women.

It's doable boys. I'm doing it. I may be moving to a cheaper country soon though... but with a cheaper country comes, you guessed it, hotter women who haven't been spoiled. >[Image: wink.gif]

Hey there.

It's good you've got enthusiasm. You don't really need all those things. Don't pay for a mentor if you don't have to. Don't assume it'll take you two years to get to a decent point.

Paid mentor - there are thousands of communities across the net you can join that'll help you out.

Original content - like I said in my last post in this thread, providing you know what you're talking about, you never have to run out of content.
Technical knowledge - do it with wordpress, and ask other people who are doing it questions.

Co-ordinated plan of attack - design site, write posts, link to other people and get them to link back, make product, sell product.
Network - RVF is a network. Depending on what your site is about, you've already got loads of built-in networks. Friends, family, co-workers, other forums you visit, twitter.

Balls of steel - yeah I guess. But of all the things on the planet that you might have to do, starting a website isn't that scary. The worst thing that can happen is you get 2 views a day for six months and then quit, losing $50 or so. I'd guess the only thing about this to say is to watch Victor's latest video over at boldanddetermined.com, because it contains a great point and the reason most people won't succeed: Confirmation.

Most people want to hear that what they're doing is great, and they need to know it'll be a success before they start. If you start a web business, you don't know it's going to succeed. You put in all the effort up front, and hope it turns out. Whether you spend thirty minutes or ten hours a day on your site, your feedback for the first few months will be massively limited. You need to have the determination to fight through it.

Anyway, I've written about starting a siteon one of my new projects in a bit more detail if anyone's interested in reading. If not, it's basically a more nuts and bolts inclusive version of my posts in this thread.

Something I think that everyone can do (that I've talked about in this thread and that article) is to network proactively. If there's a few of us starting sites, we're not going to cover every subject in the Universe on our own. Linking to each other is the quickest way to establish each other as authorities. The great thing is you could achieve a lot of authority in a short amount of time with 5-10 people posting a blog round-up weekly, so it's easily doable.

It astounds me how many blogs I have attempted to start and gave up doing. I have two I maintain, but only one which gets any regular posts (one for fun, the other for my business). I recommend the Bold And Determined blog because Viktor will answer your questions if you ask him politely (DO read his guide for what to ask). I've already reworked blog #2 based off his feed-back.

hmm. I read some advice here and I know people aren't right about them.

if you star a blog today by writing good stuff and setting up pages on popular
social platforms such as facebook, pinterest, instagram just to mention a few you will have an audience you can leverage on. this can also be done quicker if you invest some money in your promorions. people are killing it guys off reddit alone think of TIL (today I learn).

From looking at my buddy. What really worked for him:

1. Pick a niche you know a lot about, and no real authority site has already covered (IE Goodluck beating bodybuilding.com)
2. Provide enough value to the point that no one cares if you are trying to sell stuff (as it is actually good stuff).
